Valve guide seals, correct? (Video)
      #1262327 - 04/05/12 07:57 PM

Adjusted the timing, and now I am smoking pretty bad. Always smoked for a few seconds on first start, but now I am smoking after idling for a minute on. Seems to be worse after the engine is warm, or if I get on it a little.

Quick recap - rebuilt the short block, didn't touch the head (saving up for a Clearwater). Just wanted all the expert opinions... I looked through all the old threads but didn't find any videos.

And thank you for my A/C question, my cheap "quick fill kit" gauge was not accurate, so even the lowest PSI was over charged.

Thank you,
Ryan

Does it smoke when you first start it in the morning or after it sits off for a few hours?

Correct me if I'm wrong (don't have the 2.6 so I normally don't pay close attention to remembering details in those posts but I didn't think they had VSS issues?!?

Yes, smokes on first start and after sitting a couple of hours. That used to be the only time it smoked, now since I adjusted the timing it smokes after idling for a couple of minutes.

The valve stem seals on the 2.6 does not appear to be as big of a problem as with the 3.0, but this engine did sit for about 10 years... I know the head needs to be reworked/replaced, I guess what I am trying to get at is other than fouling plugs will this do any permanent damage to anything?

I don't drive it far (couple of miles a day), but I don't want to let it sit either. So until I can save enough for the new head I wanted to keep running it.

Thank you,
Ryan

The VSS's leak into the exhaust port - not as bad as oil getting by the rings to burn in the exh chamber. You can drive it quite a ways without a ton of problems, but the cat will be coking up...

what would it hurt (for sake of argument) to remove the cat and put in a section of straight pipe, on a '92 V6 3.0?

Nothing if you don't have to pass smog. might free up a single hp or two in the upper rpms.
