I was reading or trying to read through the wiring diagrams I feel like I am missing something. i think I figured out how the "Lock" light works and how it is able to retain its function even when you swap to manual hubs. I can not figure out how the 4wd indicator light is set up?
In my Tcase swap and SAS these 2 indicators will be affected, so I am trying to learn as much as I can so I can see what I can adapt over. the 231 case has a wire sensor set up to tell if it is in 4wd or not. I am wanting to see if I can set it up so that when the front drive shaft is spining the "Lock" light will be on. This would be great for those times I forget I left the hubs locked put took it out of 4wd. Any ideas on how to set this up?
I was thinking of making a seperate switch for the shifter so when it is put into 4 hi or low it will engage the 4wd light and make the sensor on the Tcase be my lock indicator, but this will only work if that piece is rotating when the front drive shaft is turning even in 2wd. thanks

I believe the Lock lights are sent a signal from a little box in the kick well area that decides via a pulse counter in the transfer case that the front driveshaft is spinning.

Yeah that was how I understood it, but how is the 4wd indicator set up? it would be sweet to bolt up the pulse generator of the 231 and problem solved.

The 4x4 lamp is lit from a simple switch inside the transfer case.

Does not sound simple if it is in the tcase. But that is helpful. I could not find it in the wiring diagrams or in the tcase section but I might have missed it. I am going to play with the 231 case this evening and if my theory works I will make that my lock indicator and add a simple switch to my shifter set up on the shifter itself. Thanks for your help.

There is a detent rail that moves a ball to engage, and disengage the switch. I meant simple as in... electrically simple.

It just like the 231 switch. One wire in and one wire out (if I remember). All it does is complete the circuit. The difference will be when the 231 is in neutral, there will be no light cause there isn't a bump for it. If you look where the switch is on the 231 without the switch in, you'll see the detent bumps for the switch when you shift the the t-case.

I think the 4wd switch is just a switched ground, not a two wire switch.
The "lock" light is lit by the magic box. The box compares the VSS in the speedo with the pulse generator on the back end of the front output shaft, and lights the bulb if they match up. To use it with a 231, you have to have a pulse gen on the front output shaft (4 pulses/rev, iirc), which could be added to the front pinion flange area without too much trouble. I think some 231's had a pulse gen, but not sure...

If you switch to manual hubs, there is no need for the "Lock" light.

Sure there is. You need to know that you forgot to unlock your hubs...
