'81 Benz 240d 4cyl diesel in a gen 1??
      #1260819 - 03/08/12 06:04 PM

Hey fella's,

Been a while. I love my gen 1 but almost never drive it because I can't afford to put fuel through it except for BAD snow days and a few hunts close to home. I have been pondering a solution.

A friend of mine offered to GIVE me a good 1983 Mercedes 240D 4cyl diesel engine if I could make it work in my Gen 1 Monty.

(1.)Is that doable without the conversion being cost & labor prohibitive to the point of diminishing returns?

I would not mind to do a Pajero diesel swap but I can't find the motor and stuff.
(2.)Where would I look?

Thanks so much,
T

Somebody on here did a 300d swap. He has the cad#'s for the adapter plate, but even with that it was not simple.

Stop and figure out how many gallons of gas you could buy with the grand plus minimum it will cost you even with a free motor.

Obviously you have never driven a 240D! They are so slow it would have to haul ass twice just to roll down hill! I think the diesel generator I have makes more power.

300TD would be the smallest I'd go.

Thanks for the info. So what/where's the sources for Pajero Diesel motors?

The real issue with the the older Mercedes diesels are the are already maxxed out when it come to making power. There is no wiggle room, on most diesels you can crank up the fuel, but the fuel is already cranked up on these dumb things. You can make all the mods in the world but if you can't increase the fuel, it's all in vain. So not only are they slow, there is nothing you can do about it, not too mention they are not very efficient when compared to other diesels. On the bright side they are very reliable. The 4D56 is you best option if you are considering an engine swap.

Try an inline 5, not 6! They run forever.

This is what I was going to say. I've driven a 240D. Walking is faster.
