I have finally — finally! — succeeded in swapping a 4D56T into my '87 Raider. Car runs, but man does she smoke. Unless I can get this under control I'm not going to get too far in my little Maine town without the cops nailing me. Any ideas on how to get the engine to behave? Many thanks!

Black or white smoke? When does it smoke? All the time, under power, on decel, etc.

Run the snot out of it to settle the rings, and please say you did not use ether starting fluid to get it running?

Thanks for your reply. It smokes on start up and acceleration, but not while idling. Smoke is light gray. Any ideas?

Is that you, Marty? Gulp — on the advice of a couple of other guys, I did use ether in the turbo to get her started before I figured out that I had a clogged fuel return. The engine actually settles down pretty quickly after starting and runs nice and smooth, but when I step on the accelerator the smoke show starts.

Did you bleed the air out of the system? I changed fuel filters on my 4D56 and before I bled the system, she smoked like a bonfire... Use the pump on the fuel filter assy, or crack the injectors... gotta get that air out.

Thanks for your post. Yes, I did bleed the filter. There shouldn't be any air in the system now. I still need to really run the thing up to temp on the open road. If that doesn't seal those valves, I'll have to think of something else.

Not sure about Grey smoke. As long as it's not blue!
"White smoke is atomized but unburned fuel. It's the result of failure to ignite. Black smoke is fuel which has ignited but only partially burned. When there's too little air for complete combustion, the hydrogen fraction of the fuel burns first, leaving excess carbon. The excess carbon is the black smoke." Quote from here
If we go with white as your smoke color, it could be someone turned up the fuel screw. Might be worth taking it to a diesel shop for a tune.
Mine blows white smoke when started cold, black under hard acceleration. I think this is pretty normal for the 4D56T.
Coolant levels good?

Are you using oil? There is this thread over on POCUK to check out if so:

Check your egr system as well, if its still in place. To eliminate it as a source of smoke, use a piece of sheetmetal to temporarily block it off (sandwich the sheet between the valve and the engine). A clogged EGR valve can produce the symtoms you described too, but at least this check won't cost you anything...
