My YJ
      #1251642 - 09/18/11 09:46 PM

Well, today was the first public outing for my YJ. It is sitting on Dana 60s, with a '97 crate 4.0. It has 4 to 1 tcase gears and 5.38s in the axles. It has an ARB up front and a spool behind.

When I bought it, I knew it had good bones, but needed some work. The front suspension and the rear both had some issues. The angles were terrible on all four corners. We moved the shackles up front and things got much better. The rear was a bit more difficult. The frame needed to be lengthened and different springs installed. We ended up going with a set of S-10 springs. We may need to add a leaf or two from a set of XJ springs. We also don't have a traction bar installed. Even so, the axle wrap is a whole lot better than before.

Today our club had a show 'n shine. I took the rig as a work in process. We still aren't happy with the shock mounts in the rear, but it still ramped 960 on a 20* ramp.

Jim, when you moved the spring mounts, did you reverse them?

With lifted jeep, you do provide a significant advantage if you relocated the pivot point by a simple shackle reversal.

I finally got around to uploading a bunch of pictures to photobucket. Here is a link to my album. The pictures aren't really in any particular order.

Phase I is done. I wheeled the rig on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. It performed even better than we had any reason to hope. Not only did it perform perfectly at crawling speeds, it was completely well-mannered at 30-40 mph on the logging roads. The BFG KM2s were superb.

Phase II will start about the first of the year. That phase is removing the old body, which is filled with Bondo and replacing it with the "new" body. We will be putting on tube fenders front and rear as well as setting it up to use the heater which came with the new tub. We also will build a new cage which will allow for the installation of the half-doors and the soft top. Before May when I go to Moab, it will have a new paint job.

Late last week we started Phase II, which is putting a new tub on the rig and building a new cage.

There is a little more to it, but isn't there always. While the rig ran and ran well, the wiring was a mess. Also, the guy who sold me the tub said that the PO had repaired some torn body mounts as a result of too high a body lift.

Turns out that "repaired" was using the word a little loosely. Several are going to have to be cut out and rebuilt. I have also had to order some new harnesses.

Well, I finished the rig last Thursday and left for Moab on Friday morning. I am going to post one picture from Moab
