91 3.0 148k, it's burning oil on startup and about a quart every 2k miles, just a few hundred miles ago, going down a flat highway at about 65+ I hit a small incline, and the engine felt like it was cutting out slightly. it got more frequent and a few hundred miles later, going up a hill on the highway, it feels like the engine is half-cutting out. Oh, the tranny is slipping when it's cold too.. at 20 degrees, it will move, and stop moving for a few seconds... but no engine stall..? I am going to try to pull the plugs today, I havn't looked at them since they went in 3 yers ago, i used bosh platunm ( the 2 tip kind) I'm hoping that's some of it... also took the cap off, kinda some crud on the rotor and some "dust" in the cap, but nothing major... Really need this to be simple!

Bosch plugs, even when brand new, have caused numerous problems and poor running in several other non-mitsu vehicles I've worked on. Replacing them with the exact OE specified part numbers (NGK, Delco, Denso) made a huge difference. Might be worth starting there to rule out the simple stuff first.

Ditto that but make sure you get NGK or Denso Iridium plugs.
When was the last time your fuel filter and transmission fluid were replaced? I would change your fuel filter since it's pretty cheap & easy, then do a transmission fluid drain & refill (make sure you get the correct fluid - Mitsu brand ATF is best). If your fluid isn't looking too bad, you might consider flushing the fluid instead of just a drain & fill (search this forum - there is a nice write-up on how to do it), but if your fluid has been neglected for too long then I wouldn't flush it - changing all your fluid at one time could cause more problems than it fixes.

I'm a big NGK fan, years of happy use with their plugs and wires. Best wires for the dollar. I buy the plain vanilla or the next step up NGK's, and have been perfectly happy with longevity. Take a good look at your plugs and describe them, especially differences plug to plug. Describe by cylinder number, 2-4-6 on the dside, 1-3-5 on the pside, iirc. If you change the wires, do one at a time...
Your problem sounds like a high speed misfire (duh), and the most probable cause is spark, followed by fuel, followed by mechanical. Especially if the oil burning has fouled one or more plugs, it gets harder to ignite the mixture. It's harder at higher engine speeds to get combustion started than it is at low-mid speeds, so as the system deteriorates due to the fouling, the high speed spark is the first to fail. On my cars, that's how I know it's time to change the plugs, and it's so dependable that I don't ever just pull them to check them.
Fuel filter ditto.

Fuel filter has to be OK, it's only 3 years old, I took off the original...I think it wasn't cheap, $40 or 60, I pulled the #1 plug... lost the pic...OMG it's muddy, then I went to pull the #4 plug...and the BOSCH LIFETIME WIRES have REACHED THE END OF THEIR LIFE!!!! (Also 3 years old) The replacements are on order with Auto Clown, I'm just going to go with whatever copper plug I can afford, I'm so broke twigs laugh at me when I walk in the woods. I need to get the courage to pull the tranny stick out. Never touched the fluid, bought a filter but never wanted to drop the pan. I'll do the wires/plugs tomorrow evening and see what happens.

Joe, man your way overdue for some good luck... I still have your transmission filter in that box of stuff you left me. P.M. me your address. Those plugs are so bad and in there for so long ( plus they're bosch) that I don't think I'd say for sure what all that junk means. I got some Bosch Nascar wires for $15.oo at Rockauto closeout. THey have the spirally steel wire in them. They cook and pull apart when I go to tune up before my bi annual smog, but seem to last untill then OK, lifetime guar. if you buy local so free new set every tune up. I use NGK for years now. I shop around, somebody will have them on sale. I think I pay about $2.25 each. Just regular ones last me forever. I'd say just change the plugs and try to get by till warm weather. Wipe your cap out with some alcohol and try to get by.

It's really strange, but in my experience Bosch plugs tend to work best in vehicles of German origin. Asian vehicles seem to run better with Denso or NGK, and domestic vehicles tend to like Delco. Years ago I used to swear by the Bosch Platinum plugs in my VW and Opel, but my 240Z hated them and just didn't run right until I put some NGK plugs in it.
Get rid of those German plugs and make your Montero happy with some Denso or NGK Iridium plugs.

FYI, I change my fuel filter once a year. 3 years your well overdue for a new fuel filter. 2 years or 60k miles is a good rule of thumb.
