3000gt Alternator and a 2.6 G54B conversion
      #1230821 - 12/20/10 01:21 AM

I have been running a 110 am alternator from a 3000GT for several years.

The only down side to the swap is the pulley. The factory pulley on the original alternator has a 15mm bore and cant be opened up.

The 3000gt unit comes with a serpentine pulley and has a short 17mm shaft. To make it work you need a custom pulley ( GM / Ford pulleys wont fit). I worked with an alternator shop that got me close, but not quite.

How much interest would there be in a custom pulley to make the swap a drop in? I did find an off the shelf pulley that can beit modified. The question is what will it cost? As a wag I'm guessing about $60, including the core that they start from.

3000gt alternators are around $40 used and $110 rebuilt. Total cost SB around 100 to 160 to upgrade to a 110 amp unit.

Thoughts?

Kevin

Sounds like a good deal, but I don't recollect ever having seen a 3000 in a JY. That is odd.

100 amp GM alternators with the correct pully are about $95 new.

Make it easy for me, regardless of where it comes from/what it is, and I'll buy one.

Hey Kevin ... Dont forget that alt is on Hyundai Sonata 95 to 98 too .. Hope that helps ...

Wow $110 for "that" alt is way cheap ..

If you ever see a FWD Dodge in the mid 80's with a 2.6 look at that alt that one "I" like its Mitsu but its a big body alt 90 amp ..Made to charge a battery not just maintain a charged battery like most of the later alt are..It has a two v-belt pully on it ...

That a good price on the pully and alt..

Have fun

Kevin,

Just to be clear, this custom pulley would be for the 2.6 guys only, since that set up uses a V belt to drive the Alternator. Right?

Justice, this is for the 2.6 motor with a V belt.

If things work out we can look at what it will take to other conversions.

The 100 amp GM alternator is what a lot of Starion owners have used. It's not a bad choice.

The only issue is it requires and adaptor to bolt to the block and a differant wiring harness to the regulator.

The part from a 3000gt has the right mounting ears and bolts up with only a simple spacer.

Also by using a Mitsubishi alternator the connector to the alternator does not need to be swapped.

Both alternators should get the power wire upgraded.

Neither is a show stopper... The only issue I have seen is getting the right pulley. My idea was to make it easy to use a Mitsubishi part and have it look like a factory put it there.

I'm looking at a couple of ways to do this.

More later,

Kevin
