rear axle
      #1228692 - 11/24/10 06:24 PM

hello, I got a raider v6 mt and when I bought it the guy that sold it to me told me that it had a locker in the rear... However, the rear axle looks to be welded together because when you turn the tires don't turn the way they should be and it is hard t make a u turn. I have read some where that the rear axle from genII monteros with mitsu lockers fit in the 2 door raiders. however i am wondering if the gears of both axles would have to be the same in order for the front axle to work properly. if so what gearing should i be looking for.

the badge in my raider says 4636 gear ratio.

thank you in advance

You may have what's known as a Lincoln Locker. It's essentially a standard open differential that's had the spider gears welded together so that both the left and right tires turn at the same speed all the time.

The gen II locker is a selectable air actuated locker similar to an ARB locker. A selectable locker can be disabled so that it acts as an Open differential allowing the tire on one side to turn at a different rate than the tire on the other side.

On a GenI, the data tag under the hood (on the firewall or the radiator support), should read either 4.625 or 4.875. If you're seeing 4.636 on the rear axle tag, then you already have a GenII axle in there. Look for a hose coming off the passenger side of the axle. If it's there, then you have the locking axle. Go to a salvage yard and find a GenII and look under the right rear passenger seat in the drug smuggle compartment. There you'll find the correct pump to actuate your locker. It can be wired switched to the battery to work, or anything fancier if you so choose. DO NOT apply any more than 5 psi to the hose or you'll blow out the factory actuator bladder. If the hose is not there, then, as has been said, you've likely got a welded axle. Not terrible to drive on the road, but not selectable and turn offable. Report back with your findings, please.

That's all fine and dandy but did you find a locker actuation switch yet or an air line on the diff pumpkin?

yes you are right, I got confused with the gear ratios. I checked today and it says 4625. So my question now would be. What gears should i look for when looking at the gen II axles ? 4636? and since the gear ratios are different don't i have to change the front as well? my understanding is that if i don't have the same gears, once in 4wd the wheel will spin at different times. I am right ?

thanks

If there are large differences in gear ratio then, yes you'd want to change the front to match. In our case, 4.625 and 4.636 are close enough to not cause issues. I've been running this setup for 3 years. The good news is that with your truck, you can find an axle from an SR (preferrably a 94-96) and use it because you have a coil sprung rear end. When searching, you'll also want the driveshaft, trailing arms, emergency brake cables and locker pump. It's normally a bolt up swap, with the occasional exception of the driveshaft needing work at a driveline shop. Only a couple of us have had to have that done.
