97 Montero VS. 99 Montero?
      #1203441 - 03/12/10 11:17 PM

OK as you all know my Monty is an oldie but goodie. There is a 99 Montero here locally 170k. they want 3500 OBO, Said T-belt and W-pump changed 4-5 months ago. The other is a few hrs away 97 (both are loaded) it only has 107k New T-belt and W-pump 3900. 97 looks like new. 99 quite nice also. 99 right here-4 miles away. 97 is a ways away. Is there any major differences in Engine/drive trains. Pretty sure both have Lockers etc. Which is better? HELP!!

They are the same except for the different body styles. Personally I'd take the lower miles if they both have a rear locker

psssh! they dont know what they are talking about, I'd go for the 99!

J/k. I'm assuming the 97 is an SR model if it has a rear locker, right? Tough choice tho. If it wasnt for miles, I'd say the 99. But just depends what you want and what you want to see on it. Good luck!

Did the 4.2X gears come in 97 with the 3.5 SOHC? I know 98 on is 4.2X.

Tought choice. I think I'd go with the low miles. The 97 is a lot lower. Either that, or haggle the 99 down.

Yes. 97 was the first 4.272 year

So no advantage there. I do like the blister fenders. Was luke warm at first, but now that we have one and I see it everyday, it does look good. SRs are good too, better than my LS, which looks so narrow. Unless the 97 is really far, I'd go for the low miles.

I paid $3500 for a 98 with 118,000 miles in great condition (even had the timing belt done at 100,000 miles). The only things wrong with it is the drivers side door lock is doing that phantom locking scenario these are known for. If we hit the door lock twice it seems to work just fine though. The other is a small oil seepage from the back of the passenger side valve cover which is no biggy.

I waited for months to find the right one and passed on quite a few that were in worse shape for more money so be vigilant and the right one will show up. I was even willing to pay upwards of six to eight grand and did't have to so....be patient.

I'd offer $2800 and pay $3000 for the 99 if it runs strong and is in great condition.
