CA Guys (and Gals)-how's my motorcycle route look??
      #1191701 - 12/29/09 03:58 PM

Hey all, been a while since I've been on the Wire! I'm taking a trip to San Diego next month and am renting a Harley to cruise around while my GF is in a training class. I'd like to see some mountains as well as the coast and here's what I've come up with so far:

Full details here

Mainly wondering if any of the areas I might be going through wouldn't be a good idea (crime, traffic etc.), but any suggestions on cool places to check out would also be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome to San Diego. It does offer a variety of opportunities.

In general, the route would be a good bike ride.

A couple of points....

Stay off of Highway 78 west (and east) between Escondido and Carlsbad during morning and afternoon commute. Typically 3-6 pm and 7-9 am.

Your route from Carlsbad to Del Mar has a lot of stop lights.

I-5 south is heavy traffic in morning (7-9).

I-5 north is heavy traffic in afternoon (3-6).

I-15 north and south are about like I-5.

If you want a good bike ride, from Ramona take the 78 to Julian. At Julian, pickup the 76 and head south to Lake Cuyamaca and I-8.

That will give you a look at mountains and a couple of desert overlooks.

Sorry Josh I can't help you with your trip route. I don't recognize any of those places. Must be Southern California, better know as the bad lands by us good folks from the Northern part.

Thanks for the reply, definitely don't want to be sitting in traffic and/or at stoplights. I'll be riding on Sunday so that should help some, revised my route for more mountain/desert viewing :)

I agree on your revised route! As a guy that commuted on a bike for 2 years while stationed there, I agree wholeheartedly with John's advice. More than missing stoplights, I'd hate to see you get schwacked by the cagers as they dot the weave at 80 mph... ENJOY!
