Strengthening KM145 5 speed
      #1184095 - 11/03/09 09:05 PM

I am having a custom pan machined up from Aluminum 6061-T6 for my KM145 5 speed. If there is any interest please express it now and I'll have a few more made. These will come with 12 grade 5 - M8 studs, washers and nuts and can have a provision for an oil temperature sensor. Ballpark pricing is $100. Should know firm by the end of the week.

Plan is to have a few strain gages mounted on the current stamped steel stock set-up and compare once this is mounted to determine stiffness difference.

This will help the KM145 guys a lot because it will help limit the flex of the housing under torque which is the main killer of the 145. I had made one of these about 4 years ago and nobody understood the point and only one guy bought one and i never heard back from him so i assume it worked wonderfully because i think he was destroying 145's on a regular basis.

Once you figure the difference in housing flex and post the gain you'll have my seal of approval.

A key factor to making the stiffer pan "close the box" and reduce case flex is to use an adhesive type sealer instead of a gasket.

Loctite makes a couple of good ones.

Should I buy one if I plan to run 35s, 4.88s and a stock 2.6? I kinda wondering if it would break with the 35s even with a stock motor... The 4.88s will help a bit, I kinda like to romp on the gas when I'm in the powerband though

I tell you what Phil, if you make one and install it with no problems I'm down for one

PA_JERO's diesel pickup would eat KM145's like crazy on road with 30" tires and that's going easy on the thing, they just couldn't take the torque of the 2.3L engine. I'm suprised you haven't already replaced your 5spd, usually just putting it in 4lo is too much for those things.

How much torque did the diesel put out? I have run 250 ft lbs through one with out a problem.

Was it the same unit thats behind the 2.6 in the Montero or was it the D50 2.6 tranny with the clutch cable?
