LSD friction modifier
      #1181633 - 10/16/09 10:54 PM

I'm running Royal purple gear oil in my LSD(made for LSD).

Anyway just wondering when using standard oil, when you add the friction modifier what does it do? Say you ran it w strait gear lube and no modifier would that make the LSD closer to a locked diff or closer to an open one.

The modifier reduces friction and helps prevent damage to your clutches. (edit) The more additive you put in the less lockup you will get. (Edit #2) Since the Royal Purple has friction modifier already in it should be good to go. In the past I have run gear lube with no friction modifier and added just to prevent chatter.

The ideal is to run as little as you can without causing excessive wear.

My experience is you should put in just enough to prevent chatter on sharp turns.

I guess I should come out of from under my rock ..

A LSD set up "right" does not even need FM (friction modifier).. (I think )....I did say "right"... In Haztoys world that is ..Not what a FSM says ..I know ..I know .. ...FSM could not be wrong ...

For years now every Starion LSD I've got my hands on has not been set to what the FSM says it should be .. The FSM plate stack is loose for My world ..Let alone what the factory really did and gave to the car buyer....Why...????

The looser the LSD the more it does this thing you all keep fighting LB.(LSD BANG)...Did you all know LB does not even happen in my world ... Im racing stuff that had FM in it at the start and has at least two oil changes and I have just been to lazy to get some more FM from Ford its across town .. I will ad FM to them all..It coms down the one BIG BANG my lsd and all lsd that are set up "right" will do on a fast strate freeway run and and or the "butt waggel" from the back end when the tires are the wrong sizes...(my way of size...not yours..).. LSD are a "nightmare" to a OEM car maker did you know that...Thats why the FSM is wrong on diff set up and lsd's..And SO (snake oil ..oops synthetic oil I mean.. ..Sorry..) came alone to 'mask' the problem... ..Half my ten plus LSD's in all my stuff are low on FM .. My New Monty I'll tell you what I'll do ..I have the whole axle pulled down and cleaned to reshime and set the axle bearings end play .. Once I get it going I'll not put any FM and just normal oil in it see what it does ... I bet its like all "my" lsds ...

2 and 2 does NOT add to 4 in the car world all the time .. Theres Lawyers and Dollars in play ...

Have fun
