The Aussies still like the term.... particularly around Perth - when they're referring to the folks in Melbourne.

When I travelled around mainland Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, I was always asked by the folks why the heck I wanted to go to Melbourne, since there was nothing but pooftas there.

For a single Yank fellow, Melbourne was a target rich environment..... double the odds since the Melbourne ladies seemed to greatly prefer American lads to the locals - pooftas or not.
