      #1170387 - 08/05/09 07:05 PM

Want to change the valve and not tear the hose as it's a molded one and never been off this 1987 MMM 2.0. Any lubricant ot tips for removing this hose without damage.

Dave, mine was frozen, but somewhat rigid. I was able to turn it on the nipple to break it loose. After that, it came off with some pulling and gentle prying with a screw driver.

HTH

BTW, how are you liking your new rig?

Jon,thanks for the tip.....What new rig?..Same one last eight years..have put 98,000 miles since buying in 2001 when it had 42,000 plus.Had my eye on a tracker/or was it a Samuri 4x4 in Jackson,Ca. but as it had no air I hesitated too long and puff.it was gone,Ha,Ha...How did your raider work out?I wouldn't have been a happy miner with that low mileage it gets as an every day driver.Though I saw a nice red one at my Doctors office the other day and it had me thinking and dreaming again,oh to be young,or at least young at heart and adventurous.Love your persistance on those rigs Jon.......Dave

My bad, Dave. I thought you had picked one up. The mileage WILL improve. I just have to get off my a$$ and figure out what's up. I have a feeling it's in the vacuum or emissions system. I put in a Napa VSV and the top came off when I was plugging in the vacuum hose. Napa refunded my money, but I think it may have been my fault. At least one of the counter guys thought so. Blamed it on my use of an open ended wrench on install instead of their expensive slotted socket. Probably was...I seem to jack up a lot of stuff.

The AC on this rig needs charged and tested. Once I get it through smog and get the idle straight, I suspect the mileage will improve as a result of having everything straight.

Let us know how the PCV hose goes!

Jon,came off easy as could be,valve was a little long winded but the crescent wrench did the job.Of course I noticed that upper radiator hose is swollen and cracking at the t-stat and perhaps the t-stat gasket seems to be leaking. What the heck it's an 1987 MMM so the age is showing.Still have an oil leak somewhere on the drivers side that shows after a long run as a spot on the groundThought for sure from the fuel pump, but it must be in the tank as I can't see it on the block and remember reading in the manual it was on the block in a 2.0.Anyway if I didn't have things to worry about I'd still have all my hair.ha,ha.

does that 2.0 block have balance shaft covers? Common leak source.

Glad to hear you got that PCV taken care of, Dave! That thermostat gasket and hose is cake to replace. I'd say you'd be out less than $20 and an hour of effort. I don't know what to tell you on the oil leak, brother, as I've no experience with that engine. I hope you're able to track it down!

Yeah Jon,Imust have had that hose off when I first got the truck in 2001 as to change the t-stat,first thing I've always done when getting another vehicle.T-stat lays right below the hose on this 2.0 and the left upper bolt on t-stat cover is a tighty space.Funny thing is I write everything in a note pad ever done to the truck, but can't find hose changes, which I'm sure I've done twice as I've one old set behind the bench seat, along with old belts....don't snicker now,the old girlfriends I let out of there months ago ......Dave

Fuel pump is on the head, in the middle of where the intake mani bolts to the head, and it is a common oil leak source. Remove the air cleaner and you should see it between cyl 2&3.

It also has balance shafts. I can't find an illustration of the 2.0 to tell if it has balance shaft covers, but if it does, there's a big one under the intake manifold on the side of the block.
