2001 Kia sportage with Check Engine Light
      #1168755 - 07/27/09 10:21 PM

Ok, My kia, I replaced the thermostat 2weekends ago, now today on my way home the check engine light came on, but the engine didn't overheat. The needle didnt go about half way. So I swang into advanced auto and got a Thermostat code. I thinkit was p0107 or close to that. The guy told me the thermostat was more then likely stuck open. I just replaced one that stuck closed, now I get one that is stuck open. What is going on?
I am at wits end with this kia, and can't afford 67.00 bucks to replace cluth fan and I do all my own work on this kia, that I possibly can. Any other ideas as to what I am doing wrong? How do i test to see if the thermo is good? The guy mentioned boil it? What does that mean? What do i do?

Thanks for your help. I need the vehicle to get back and forth to work which is 47 miles one way.

Kelly did you have them clear the code ? Kia's like to throw codes. I don't have my code book handy, others here might have one in front of them, don't remember what p0107 is for, how long ago was the air filter changed ? if the fld. still full when it's cold and you remove the cap? and if the fld in the res. tank still at the full mark on the side ?

could not find my book to much of the in-laws junk packed in the garage, I think the code is a P0117, check the connectors that hook to the thermostat housing make sure they are tight and free from grease etc. Kelly ? when you put in the thermastat did you make sure the little jiggle valve on the thermastat faced forward.

Hey john, I think the code is P0117, and no didn't clear the code. Yes, I made sure, cuz you walked me thru it, remember. The guy at advanced auto said it's more then likely stuck open. So until Sat I can't get to it and take it back to replace. I bought the 1 year warranty on it, so I am good to go. I will have to continue to drive it till then, when I can get under the hood. I will check to make sure hose's and connections are good. I am just glad it's not overheating and leaving me stranded on the highway.
I could take it to autozone also, do I ask them to clear the code? Here's another thing, the other day about a week ago, I got gas and didn't tighten the cap 3 clicks and then got gas again sunday and then monday the light went on. Maybe the Kia threw that code, cuz of the gas cap and me replacing the thermostat.

Any help would be great. Doesn't sound like the clutch fan quite yet, but still at a loss, since my gauge isn't going up, it's staying where it should.

have them clear the code, the ecm (computer) cycles so it might of had something it did not think was right so it gave a code. then we will see if the light comes on again. do you remember that the temp setting for the therm you bought is ?

Found on my 2000 that if you unplug the left most fuse for 10 minutes, it wipes out memory of CPU without wiping out radio presets.

It's worth a try.
