For those of us who have ever dreamed of getting the chance to start fresh owning a brand new Gen1 series, this could be it.
In a recent trade magazine 'Automotive Testing Technology International' they did a feature single-page write up on the Scorpio, a new SUV from Indian car manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra. And it looks like a dead ringer for the early Gen-series Pajero/Montero. Looks as though they borrowed heavily from Mitsu's early days.
Now I cannot profess to know anything about the build quality of Indian vehicles, but let's face it - the prospect of Indian cars on the road is a lot better than Chinese from what I've heard.
And get this... it's got a 2.2L turbo diesel! Avg. 30mpg? I'm tempted!

What do you guys think? Time to start a Mahindra forum here in the wire?

Not sure I can say it looks like a mitsu til I see more pics of it. Looks like a miget version as far as I can tell, even the Jeep Commander looks like a Montero in some shape or form. Doesnt look half bad, I think the US market would like it. Plus cars/ trucks and SUVs made in India are selling cheap, I'm waiting for the TaTa Nano

I can't say i like the look of this vehicle all that much... but i said the same thing about my montero when i bought it. Maybe this one will grow on me too lol. The little turbo diesel and the price sound pretty good though.

From the side, it looks like a dead ringer to me.
In their gallery, they show a picture of one with a hood scoop too!

Their pick-ups look pretty nice too, especially the DC/dual-cab.
Keeping my fingers crossed they actually make it to US market as promised.

No dead ringer for a Gen I to me. It is smaller by appearances. Looks like a cross between a Gen I and a RAV4.

I agree with Bill, but I have old eyes. Can't say what's wrong with Bill's.
By the way Bill, Happy Birthday!!

Happy bday to you... oh sorry... back on topic.
Looks ok so long as it has decent running gear (axles, etc.)
From an off road POV, the problem would probably be availability of upgrades but that hasn't stopped us before.

I saw a lot of newer GEN1's in south America. I forget the details but another car company bought the tooling (Hundai?) and kept producing them.
If I remember right it was called a Galopeger or something.
