factory altimeter
      #1124488 - 10/30/08 03:04 PM

does anyone have a factory mitsu altimeter in their montero? could you post a pic? are they the old school mechanical type that work off of pressure or are they electronic?

is there any value to having one? are they somewhat accurate?

there are like four types, the more common ones are the mechanical ones that come in gen 2's but i've seen a few other ones maybe i'll post some pics.

The real value of the electronic type is that, since they freeze their reading when the power dies, the rescue crews can judge how far you fell when you went over the cliff.

There are only 3 ways to measure altitude. You can measure barometric pressure, use gps math calculation, or use a GOOD inertial nav system from a known reference.

The first is most common, whether the gauge is mech or electric, and is handicapped by the fact that air pressure changes due to weather over time. You have to at least daily recalibrate the gauge, like when a tower gives an approaching, or taking off airplane the field baro pressure. Using the weather station baro pressure won't work, because the goofs translate it to sea level equivalent. It is pretty accurate when properly calibrated.

GPS altitude measurement is the least accurate of the three parameters calculated, due to math constraints and the angle relationships. And Homeland Security likes it that way.

Inertial nav is prohibitively expensive.

I've owned manual mech altimeters, and one german electric digital baro altimeter, and have owned gps with alt functions. Mostly uselass compared to a topo map and good gps lat/long location. The baro instruments usually went way off overnight and had to be reset.

In general, if I'm not in a plane, I don't need an altimeter, because the ones I can afford are useless.

I have one in the parts bin. It only goes to 10k+ feet. Not much use for the lucky guys who live out west.

The Factory Altimeter is very accurate in my JDM GEN II Pajero. I have it set in my home town to 855Metres thanks to looking it up on google. and when I drive through the mountains (150km away from my town) a few of the mountain passes have signs posted with the elevation and it is always Bang on what the sign says.

I dont really have much use for it but its neat to see it climb as you drive up the side of a mountain and fall as you go down the other side.

I have an old aircraft altimeter that fits very nicely under the the left side of the grab bar. It's quite accurate if it's set to the current elevation before traveling.

torquemonster:

can you please provide a picture of your factory mitsu alitimeter? is it electronic or mechanical? do you also have the compass and inclinometer?

Your trucks don't have them already?

in my SR, I have:

oil
volts
compass

in my LS I have:
oil
volts
inclino

there was a third option that I am aware of that had:

compass
altimeter
inclino

I was just asking him about the compass and the inclino b/c I think that is what he has if I am correct in my understanding of the options from factory.

which by the way, if the factory had it with the volts and oil gauges hooked up, and I wanted to get rid of them to put the third option above, I know how to switch over the oil pressure circuit to the warning light on the dash instead (there is a secondary plastic clip that you plug onto the oil pressure sensor near the oil filter). what I am not familiar with is how do you switch over the volt warning light circuit to the volt 'sensor' so to speak? is there a similar plastic clip for a second wire somewhere near the alternator that you switch over to?
