Can you pack too much grease in a frt wheel bearing?
      #1115089 - 09/03/08 02:56 PM

Just replaced a rusty S.W. hub with Aisin, installed M.Sport brake dust shield , to match the M.Sport cailipers and repacked the bearing on my right wheel.

Can you overfill the hub with grease,,,like is there expantion room needed or it will blow out of seals.

Maybe stupid , but just curious , thinking too much , but it seems like 30 years ago I did that to a Jeepster Commando.

You want the bearings to be packed with grease, NOT the locking hub. Cold weather and lots of grease in the hub makes the hubs too stiff to turn. And autohubs won't unlock right. If the seals are good, all the hubs need is a light coating of lube that's just stiff enought not to run off in hub heat...

I just smeared a little grease on the sliding surfaces in the F.W. manual Aisin Hub. The S.W. that I took off were full of rust and you don't lube them at all(?).
I was more concerned about how much to pack in the void between the bearings. I packed'em full , no air pockerts.Just thinken , if grease was to expand it would go in the void insde the hub before pushing out the seal on the back of the hub.
The rust in my S.W. hubs I'm guessing is from bad gaskets on the S.W. hub and hopefully isn't the seal where the axle goes thru the spindle,,,the seal at those needle bearings.

You did it correctly - the wheel bearings and needle bearings should be full, with no voids - then install. Just a little grease in the hubs is just right.

I didn't pull the axle out of the spindle to lube needle bearing, I just pushed in on the axle with the snap ring off and pumped some grease ontop the axle thru the void created where the dust shield was pushed open.
