'89 V6 4runner: Auto to Manual Swap Question
      #1099608 - 06/02/08 11:40 PM

I have seen an '89 4runner SR5 V6 for sale near where I live. It needs some work, but the frame is good and the floorboards are dry. However, It's got an automatic tranny. I think a swap to a 5 spd would be in order. I am wondering if the transmission tunnel needs to be modified to do the swap. It also looks like the rear window controls are a part of the transmission console. Is there a corresponding manual transmission console with all the right window switches?

Man! I've got the poor yota man bug bite. I looked at the above described '89 4runner. It's got really rusted rear quarter panels and equally bad front fenders. It also needs brake work, probably a master cylinder. The rear power window doesn't work. And it recently needed a head gasket so the motor was rebuilt, BY THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL SHOP CLASS! And now it runs a little rough and it's down on power when its cold. Yet I still like it! Did I mention that it's an automatic?

Now for the good points. It's an SR5 with A/C and cruise. The doors have no bottom seam rust, The hood has no rust in the usual place on the leading edge. There is no rust under the battery tray and none that I can see in the upper engine compartment. I checked the firewall/cowl seam up under the dash above the driver's kick panel/fuse block area and the seam looks sound with no signs of corrosion. Also we have had a good amount of rain and this 4runner, which sits outside, has dry floor boards, passenger and driver side. The sheet metal on underside of the rear of the vehicle back by the roll pan in the corners under the taillights is good too. It's got new 235 -75-15 tires on cheap aluminum aftermarket wheels. The interior is nice with good upholstery and a solid crack free dash

I think this 4runner is a candidate for new quarter panels, from toyotafiberglass.com. Some fenders, engine work (maybe a 3.4 swap) and a manual tranny swap. I think I can get it for $1250. Am I crazy ?

You said nary a word about the frame from what I can see.
Shoot, just the tires run about $600 now.

Frame has some surface rust and I wouldn't be surprised if it has the beginnings of internal decay at the usual spots, but I think my previous experience with frame patching would serve me well with this project. In the past I just boxed in the rusted area. In the future I would try to cut out the bad section and replace it for a factory looking repair. Where I live there may be a future in such work.
