The FSM is a bit vague about the adjustment procedure. I pulled it apart last night. Real dirty down in there.
Grandpa Bill had talked about having a no start issue with his awhile back, turned out to be the inhibitor switch dirty and out of adjustment. I've been having a similar issue with mine, but I was thinking it was the ignition switch. As it turns out, it is more likely that it's the inhibitor switch on mine, too.
I've noticed recently that the shifter is not engaging the parking pawl when parked uphill and sometimes on flat ground. So, I took it apart and adjusted the angled button ('90 FSM 23-39 #10). Had to screw it down some more and lube it real good. Problem 2 solved.
Back to why I went into it in the first place...
It's been getting progressively worse. Intermittently have to wiggle the shifter to start it. And, last night, I noticed that my reverse lights didn't come on in reverse unless I pushed the shifter forward about .25". So, should I be able to move the inhibitor switch back that much, or go thru the entire process in the manual. I may be overcomplicating the procedure

If you determine it is not the switch, check the voltage to the starter solenoid. For some unknown reason, mine dropped to 6 VDC and would not actuate. I ended up using the 6 VDC to operate an add-on relay to put power to the starter solenoid. DUH?

It was the switch. Dozen Q-tips and some Lectronik cleaner did the trick. Great write up Jay!
