0 to 50, finally got to check out the 4.3
      #1048899 - 10/25/07 09:07 PM

Finally got the chance to do some speed (acceleration, actually) tests.

On a relatively flat (very slight uphill) stretch of quiet freeway, I pulled over, and got out the video camera. I used the video to record both speedo and tach in the same view, using a very wide angle lens, recording at 30 fps @ 640x480 MOV file, and then did several standing start runs.

I used 1 foot driving, going from brake then to gas, not using one foot on brake and the other one on gas, so that I did not preload the torque convereter. Controlled starts, no rubber, accelerating without risking spring wrap, and drive-train damage (sounds pretty boring, no?).

The truck was full of the usual crap, ~2/3 tank of gas, nothing removed to make it ligther, seats still in, so is the hi-lift, and spare rad coolant, oil, tools etc.
I did not start using any signal, I just started the camera, and within 1-2 seconds hit the gas.
I did this a few times manually shifting (not recommended for holding a camera!), and several times letting the A/T shift itself.

Then went home and took a stop-watch to the video, starting the time when the engine revs started up. I don't have the right programs at home to de-compile the video frame by frame to get the exact timing, but ran the videos at least 3 times
each with the stop watch to make sure the times were consistant.

Using regular octane gas (from experience, it would be slightly better with higher octane, less knock sensor interference), on a cool 10 deg Celsius / 50 deg F (good air density), hardly any wind, the engine was warm as it took 15 minutes of driving to get to the location, clear sunny day.

I experienced the engine's rev-limiter a few times on the early runs doing the manual shifting, and it kicks in ~4200-4500 rpm, and seems to anticipate the revs, shutting me down sooner if the revs cross 4000 in a hurry.

A/T is the 4L60E, which is a slow shifting trans, much lazier than the tight Mitsu trans. There is a fast-shift option available (used in the Corvettes), but it's a $200 option I have yet to do.
Gears ratios: 1st = 3.06:1, 2nd = 1.62:1, 3rd = 1.00:1
(I didn't use O/D on these runs, but it's 0.70:1)
Rear diff is Mitsu/ARB, 4.625:1 final, pushing Yoko M/T+ 33x12.5's on 15x8 Aluminum rims. Tires ~28psi.
Final drive ratios: 1st= 14.153:1, 2nd= 7.493:1, 3rd= 4.625:1

The times should be with 0.2 sec either way.

So much for the pre-amble.

Manual shifting:
1st to 2nd gear: 4300 rpm, 27 kph, 17 mph, 3.0 sec.
2nd to 3rd gear: 4100 rpm, 62 kph, 39 mph, 7.3 sec.
Still in 3rd: 3300 rpm, 80 kph, 50 mph, 11.0 sec.

Auto shifting:
1st to 2nd gear: 3600 rpm, 23 kph, 14 mph, 2.5 sec.
2nd to 3rd gear: 3800 rpm, 54 kph, 34 mph, 6.3 sec.
Still in 3rd: 3300 rpm, 80 kph, 50 mph, 12.5 sec.

It is noticibly faster manually shifting, as the engine's cpu is tuned to "economy", and wants to run in a taller gear asap, keeping the rpms low.

OK Frank, I want to see your #'s when the project's done!
Also curious to see any other rigs #'s.

The smallest MOV file (12 seconds) is still 12.5 Mbytes, so I'm not going to try to post it, or email it. Unless someone's got lotsa storage...

That's good, Don! I'll put up some numbers if I ever get that far.

Your ECU controls the transmission shift points? Can you have it reprogrammed to hold in gear longer on low vacuum but shift normally on increased vacuum?.... or do you prefer the economy parameters?

Frank,
Looking forward to the #'s!

Yes, there are aftermarket chips, and even a co. somewhere in the eastern US that will cusom modify one to your specific rig on their dyno. But you MUST use high octane afterwards...

You can effect it by modifying the DRAC, and I have. I have 2 drac's and so I modified one away from the "correct" hi fuel econ settings, and now it's more fun to drive. But ideally, thet rev-limiter needs to move up a long way...

Not to sound at allllll negative, but is that fast?

Also, that is some awesome work you've done, you've made alot of custom things for that Raider! Great work on everything, def one of a kind

not to be negative either but that's awful! My 89 lwb, stock auto does 60mph in 11 seconds on flat. Were you flooring it, you should do alot better.

really cool that you got a new engine in there, I'd never know how to do that.

His rev limiter is holding him waaaaay back. If you notice, the shift points are very low for performance driving.

He's got a'plenty towing torque, though.

Oddly, it feels fast.

But then I spent 18 years in that rig with the 2.6L engine...

In side by side driving, I usually spank any truck/SUV other than the BMW/Mercedes/Porsche editions with their big 6's or 8's.
Especially from a standing start, through 2nd gear to regular city speeds.

With the low rear diff gears, it really moves off the line.

The limiter sucks, not much I can do about it without some serious cpu re-writing, well beyond anything I want to try, and not something I'm willing to risk by trying just any chip.
Though it did mean the previous owner couldn't abuse it either, a good thing when you're buying used.
What always struck me funny about that engine, is the incredible high capacity smoothed flow air intake manifold system, it came with racing pistons (they're "Mahle" brand, 30% lighter), and yet it's matched to a low speed rev limiter.

However, the torque is great.
I climb the long hill to work every day, ~6% grade, at 60kph (~35mph) in OD at 1400 rpm (torque converter locked).

At first glance I thought It was 11 seconds 1/4 mile

I agree with Don, anything feels fast after a 2.6.

It ain't sports car fast, by any stretch of the imagination!

But remember, once you put 33x12.5 M/T tires on a Mitsu, it WILL feel a lot slower, and you'll be looking for some way to get that feeling of power back because you're tired of timing your runs with a calender!

Add in some extra 0.25" steel for rocker skids, bumpers, and belly/tank skids, and you'll really wish you had that turbo/supercharger/etc. or those 5.29 ring gears!

I'm quite happy with the overall package. It's very well set up for off-road, hauls a trailer just fine on the freeway, and has no trouble competing on the streets/hiways.
And with the engine always running at lower rpms, it's easier on the mechanics too.
