CB antennas
      #1041701 - 09/28/07 02:27 PM

Where do you guys mount your antennas on your Gen2s? I've got this Cobra CB from my Jeep that I'm about to put in, but I'm not sure what to do about an antenna.

I've got a Wilson fiberglass antenna I could mount somewhere permanently (also removed from the Jeep), but for the amount of use it will get, I'm thinking of just getting a magnetic mount. I could place it on the top-center of the truck, through the sunroof!

The mag mount appeals to me because it's easily removable, and I wouldn't have to run/hide wire.

I mounted mine on a cross bar of the roof rack. Pretty much center of the rack. I angled it backwards some. Reception was great. I drove into my garage, and it just bent back nicely. Forgot it was up there, and backed out and it SHATTERED. I got a replacement, and I'm going to mount it in the same place. I just use one of the 2-3' antenna's.

How did you route the antenna wire up there?

I don't have a rack yet, but it's in the works.

36" long, magnetic mount - center of the roof, great reception. Stays in the garage most of the time. When on tight/low branch trails moves to the hood.

Use a flexible antenna that can bend completely over, and mount it to the spare tire carrier. Between the door and the carrier. Alow a couple feet above the roof.

Magnet mount with floppy spring. I really don't have the need for all that much ground plane. I'm using a strapped down Galaxy President that does about 200w with the rf gain all the way up. Make SURE you are swr matched on the antenna, whatever you use. The meter is cheap, and the adjustment usually easy. Do not coil any extra antenna cable length, and do not alter length. Store extra cable in a figure 8 and secure with cable ties.

My son's got the black face Johnson tube radio (23 channel) with an old 1000w linear tube amp that's the sweetest talking cb I've ever seen. The first cb I ever saw was in my father's company Mercury. A 3 channel tube Johnson about the size of a toaster oven, with a long whip antenna on the back bumper with a (white!) tennis ball to keep it from whacking bodywork. Somewhere around 1957-8...

Ed, do you remember where I had mine? K40 antenna, that has a hood lip mount, and is just outboard of my radio antenna. No holes, no magnets, great reception, lifetime warranty. And a half turn separates the load coil from the base, so you can take it off when you're not using it, leaving the cable and base in place.

Don on here has one, as well as a few other folks. I've been using the K40 for 12 years, and its been great. Road King on Barlow Tr has them.

I remember the pics of yours Phil. RoadKing is where I got my Wilson. I was thinking the magnet mount would avoid the bracket and running any cable.

How long is your antenna coax?

The K40 comes with the hood lip mount, and has a rubber cap, so the only metal contact is on the under side of the hood, two tiny set screws... the coax has a removable end, so its easy to snake through the firewall and then reattach - its a looooong cable too, not sure exactly, but I have a bundle left behind my batteries under the hood...
