Auto hub maintenance
      #1040779 - 09/24/07 07:52 PM

is there any maintenance that needs to be done to the stock auto hubs, like grease? There wasn't anything about it in the FSM.

Thanks

IIRC - The auto hubs need cleaned and greased. Not too much grease, as too much seems to make them slow to disengage. I like to add some 30w oil to keep them operating in cold weather.

Large channel wrench was what I used. Doesn't have to be a name brand. A cheap Harbor Freight one would probably be fine. I dont recommend tightening by hand or you'll probably loose your covers.

If you don't have large channel locks or a pipe wrench, you can try an old belt or strip of webbing material wrapped around the cover with smaller vice grips or other pliers clenched on both sides of the straps close to the cover.

Kind of like this (please forgive my hasty drawing):

The best auto hubs maintenance advice I can offer is this:

Remove them and replace with manual hubs.

Actually, forget what I wrote. What Clay said. That's really your best course of action on many levels.

nah, I like my autos, stay in my heated cab and just throw the shifter into 4. I know the manuals are stronger but for my kind of 4 wheelin these work best for me.

I'd be real sure the axle stub needle bearings in the hub are good, and that the back side hub seal is tight. Water is not friendly to hub guts and axle splines...
