5 Speed Manual Transmission- 94 Montero
      #1039595 - 09/19/07 05:38 PM

To replace or not to replace: That's the dilemma.

Dealer says they never see this trans in these SUVs. They say "rare." They diagnose the input shaft bearing is failing. Car still drives OK, but noisy, especially when clutch is let out. Some gears are fussy. Been doing this for 2+ years and has gotten some worse.

How complex is this job? Is it easy to screw up? Am I better off disassembling trans, replacing all bearings OR installing remanufactured trans? These are the choices they gave me.

(140K, new tires & brakes, timing belt, water pump -- she's moderately cared for)

Hey Sparkem, another MT GenII...!!!

What kind of prices did they give to go with the options? Who does the reman on the reman? It sounds like they don't have the appetite to do the rebuild themselves.

They certainly are rare in the US. I have never worked on a MT Montero.

There was a slight difference in the Gen 1 and 2 M.T. tran. ,,in case you find one ( who knows where) rebuild.
Like gen. ones model 1 the gen 2 is 1-2A..

For my '92, I bought a used trans out of a wrecked GenII in Arizona. The donor vehicle had very low miles on it. I think I paid around 750 for it? That was a couple years ago...no problems since. carpart.com is how I located mine, I think.

I am pretty sure that there are also differences between Gen II 12V and 24V 3.0s. IOW, I don't have the same tranny as Stony.

And BTW, Nathan, I think my MT will bolt to an SR...

I think it would too. Stony, still have that old trans around? How many splines is the output shaft?

Yeah, I do. I'll count it. But as Bill said, the trans are probably different between my 12v 3.0 and a 24v 3.0, and wouldn't it be different yet to a 3.5? I'll count them today on mine anyway.

They will all bolt up to the engines and the flywheels are functionally the same. I intend to swap a 5 speed into my SR and will keep the Superselect transfer, I hope. I am under the impression that all the Mitsu trans are 23 spline output. I could well be wrong since I have not checked them.
My desire is to use the alloy case trans from a Sport since they have the new style syncros.
The trans in my 94 Mighty Max has a similar issue to what Dirtygirl is encountering, mine apperars to be a bearing mount has loosened allowing the main shaft to move forward and back a bit. Mine will jump out of 1st and 3rd, otherwise functions fine. It could be the input bearing, I have not checked.

I just started the 3.8 DOHC in my SR yesterday and hope to finish the aluminum radiator by next week, time permitting.
