Forget the JetA.. I got a veggie source.. :D
      #1037939 - 09/13/07 02:54 PM

A guy I've BS'd with for years on another message board owns a small restaurant on a truck route, and he's just converted his full-sized Dodge to SVO. He's got enough left over to load me up on a regular basis. I'm going to have to load up to make it worth the 2 hour drive to get to his greasy spoon!
I'm not sure where I gained this good karma, but a family friend just gave a me a relatively new laptop, and let us book a whole trip on his aeroplan miles too. I hope it doesn't run out!

conversion kit, heater lines, dual tanks are what you'll have to put in for a svo running pajero.

No SVO here. I just want to stretch my diesel with a little in-tank biodiesel blending . I won't go over 40veg/60diesel.

Hi,

I've been doing the biofuel thing for about 3 years now including waste vegetable oil (WVO), virgin straight vegetable oil (SVO) and biodiesel from oils and animal fats. I've done a bunch of research and also run WVO and biodiesel in a 4D55T which is a cousin to your 4D56.

You're in for a world of hurt if you blend vegetable oil and petroleum diesel in a one-tank system. (same problem with blending RUG and Kerosene as well) I've got lots of friends who did that in old 123 Mercedes diesels and trashed the fuel system on them after a year or two. At least one broke a piston ring from coking of the cylinder walls and others lost compression from coking.

WVO/SVO works great in a Mitsu diesel and many other diesels with a two tank system that is properly heated. I have about 25K miles on my 4D55T already as well as another 70K miles between my Dodge Cummins, GMC 6.5 Suburban and antique Mercedes 220D. Some of them run biodiesel, the others run WVO.

The bottom line is you need to either trans-esterify the WVO into biodiesel and wash it properly before use or run a heated, two tank system with WVO/SVO that is properly filtered and dewatered.

Wow, I guess I was a little misinformed. I had done a bunch of reading on POCUK's forums, and those guys seemed to have no problems just pouring virgin canola straight into their tanks. I don't have the time, $$, or inclination to add a secondary fuel system, so I guess that plan is out.
Thanks for saving me some headaches.

Sorry to be discouraging but I'm both a biofuel nut and a Montero nut and would hate to see one of those canadian diesel beauties eat a piston ring! Biodiesel is the way to go if you want to just pour it in to your tank or blend it with petro-diesel. If you google "Collaborative Biodiesel Tutorial" you can find out how to make it yourself.

That might be an idea, however I have very limited garage-type space... My spaces are either completely outdoors (backyard) or indoors (basement with carpet etc.). How large of a setup do you need to make biodiesel from WVO?

Think of a full size hot water heater on a stand and a couple of 55 gallon drums. That's about it. However, part of the process deals with some pretty volatile chemicals. Methanol is very flammable. When you mix it with NaOH it becomes Sodium Methoxide which is a very bad chemical if you get it on your skin. (a drop on a bare foot will burn a hole in it)

Do you have any commercial biodiesel in your neck of the woods?

I use 9-12L of Canola oil per tank when running standard diesel or B40. With both I use conditioner as well. No issues.

This is minimal though. I wouldn't use oil with any fat content in it unless I had a dual tank system.

Maybe I should just consider it a diesel extender then? Keep it to 10-20% plus use Redline Catalyst?
