I have a 1988 Raider I-4 with about 500 miles on a rebuilt engine. The cylinders were rebored, new pistons went in, the head was reground, and a jet valve elimination went in. The engine had over 200,000 miles on it when it was rebuilt.
Now the balance shaft gear has broken, dropping oil pressure to zero. Thankfully the engine seems OK.
Reading posts, it looks as though FastEddy had vibration problems on one of his rebuild projects and now would recommend against the BSE kit, while powerRam50 is still pro-BSE.
What's best on a recent rebuild like this one?
Should I put the balance shafts back in, or install a balance shaft elimination kit?
Thanks,
Bob

I installed the BSE on my 89 2.6 when I rebuilt it. I didn't go through the expense that some others have done, to have the shaft and everything balanced either. I simply just installed the BSE. I have about 10k on the engine now and it does have a little more vibration, but also seems to have more power. That may just be me, no proof to back it up. It seems like I get better gas mileage also. That may just be the rebuild also. Either way, I don't have to worry about those things going out though. As far as long term results I couldn't tell you.

personal preferance man.you get new chains and guides and you wont have a problem for many years.i like the tiny bit of more power and having less of a worry about it going out.

Did you lose a "gear", or a sprocket? The only gears I know of in that train are inside the oil pump. The sprockets are powdered metal, I think, and somewhat fragile to impact. Seem to wear ok, though. Outlast the guides and chain, anyway.
I really don't like buzzy motors, and the 2.6 is real buzzy without the B-shafts... May be ok for those of you who grew up on 4bangers, but I learned "car feel" on v8's.

I think what is broken is the sprocket on the end of the balance shaft.

I am running balance shafts in my black Raider. And a BSE kit in my silver one. I really don't notice the difference. Am in the process of pulling the motor out of an 88 Conquest right now. This motor will get a BSE kit. Then its going into the Camp Raider. This will be my first 5spd turbo setup.

IIRC, and it's been a while, the sprocket is on the oil pump drive gear, and the BS is on the driven gear to reverse the rotation of the BS on the Pside of the engine.
I once sheared some teeth when a guide went and snagged the chain.
I'd put a timing set on it and crank it and check the oil pressure...

Thanks for your advice about balance shaft replacement in the 2.6 liter engine. Here's an update on the installation of the BSE kit.
Vibration and noise in the BSE-equipped engine is about same as before. There is no difference in performance.
Now we know the car has had some combination of exhaust, timing, and carburetor setup problems, so we couldn't see a performance benefit even if there had been one. Performance of this engine is well below what should be expected.
