Operationg on a top secret tip from lordtrunks the Wife and I were able to pic this up from Pheonix on Sunday...The crome accessories are making a huge pile in my garage along with the bra and henious seat covers...its starting to look like a Montero again..33's are on order as I type this..

This is what she looked like shortly after pick up..note the roof rack and "light bar" were already removed at this point.
Hours of chrome and sticker removal..

Now a few beers later...the crome crap on the bottom, left behind a rubbery residue similar to double sided tape..anyone have any tips on how to get this stuff off? If anyone wants my double crome winshield wipers they're all yours for the cost of shipping

Nice looking truck you got there . I encountered that black stuff on my boss's truck when I was helping him put the 04-07 styled F-150 emblems on his 99 truck. Just takes a lot of patience, scraping, and a little bit of luck not to damage the paint. Best of luck to ya, can't wait to see it on 33's.

That will be a great lil project.. as far as the sticker and crap on there.. I've tried Goo-Gone, but didnt work on those side decals that came from the factory on mine.. GOOF-OFF is the best. Works very well And a heat gun will help tremendously!

Check with a local body shop or two. one of them may have a decal/glue remover or you can buy one to go onto an air whizzer. It's a soft rubber cup that spins and contours on the body where the goop is. the friction removes the adhesive and doesn't damage the paint. Removal tools look about 1/2 way down for the tools. They work great.

Me and the Wife spent about 2 hrs today getting off the black stuff..got about 90% done on one side. I bought a heat gun and yes, I could not do the job without it. Thanks for the tips..The goof off works good to get the remaining sticky residue off.

Just bumping this thread for the sake of keeping my progress on this project updated and documented.
Since the last update:
-Changed out the timing belt, front main seal, cam seals, tensioner bearing valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets.
-Swapped in a locking rear end assembly from 96 SR to include coil springs and trailing arms.
-Wired up switch and plumbing for rear air locker
-installed KYB Gas-adjust shocks on all four corners
-swapped in junkyard auto tranny from a 91 Montero(lock-up torque converter)
-Replaced door Panels
-Replaced front windshield
-Installed CD player/radio
Still Need to Do:
CV boots on Passenger side fron axle
-Repair exhaust leak
remove blue carpet and install brown
remove blue headliner and install white.
Also need to armor her up and lock the front
She has a nice stance with the rear springs

Yes if anyone knows of a good proven source of molded carpet, let me know. I would hate to order from an unproven source as I've heard horror stories of non fitment.
I dont plan to put on flares unless I start to get tickets. There are so many of the these fake pre-runner type trucks running around here in so cal that this truck looks pretty mild and does not stand out to the cops. So it will probably stay as is.

I used this molded carpet set:
Metro Carpet
It was cheap - about $130 - but it wasn't easy to install. It fit ok, but required a lot of effort. Maybe they're all that way. I had them make mine with a loop fabric instead of pile. Here are some pictures:

I have a feeling that all of the molded sets are from the same manufacturer, but I'm not sure. The front went ok, but I had to make several cuts in the wheel well covers to eliminate bubbles. Also, the edges aren't finished and no snaps were installed. After a whole lot of work, I'm satisfied for the price, but if a shop could do a decent cut/sewn carpet that fit well and had finished edges for around $300, I'd pay it and think I had a bargain.

Thanks, Frank -- I agree with Justice!
One of the vendors (A1Auto, I believe) They're asking I believe 176 plus 28 s&h for a complete carpet set.
http://www.1aauto.com/1A/Carpets/Mitsubishi/Montero/1ACCS00239/6846 But you can only get four colors: 7769 SADDLE / BISCUI CUT PILE 801 BLACK CUT PILE 825 MAROON CUT PILE 816 LAKE BLUE CUT PILE
Automotive Interiors of Belcherville, MA wants 194 plus 24 S&H for the set: http://www.automotiveinteriors.com/carpetsuv/dodge/raider2dr87_89acc.htm They will send samples, and they also include the jute underlay.
One other vendor whose bookmark I can't find actually had an instruction sheet where they claim the only cut needed was an X-shaped one for the shift knob, but it's always good to hear about your real-world experience with the wheel-well bubbles.
You loop style adds a nice custom touch to your beautiful truck.

Yes, I had to do that. The best way is to lay the old carpet set on top of the new and use it as a pattern for where to cut, but you have to be really careful not to cut too far.... leave the cuts a little short, then adjust when the carpet is in place.
There's very little extra material on the sides, so care must be taken to avoid coming up short on one side.
Once you resign yourself to slitting the bubbles in the wheel well covers, it's no big deal, but the cut pile carpet masks the adjustment better than the loop style.... the loop style shows every cut. It would be much better if the covers were made to snap onto the wheel wells.
3M adhesive is your friend.
I used a double layer of automotive carpet pad.... cut in strips and glued to the low areas of the corrugated channels in the rear floor, so I can kneel without ruining my knees.
I also took the piece for the rear cargo area to an automotive upholstery shop and had them bind the edges.
If you ask, they'll make any color or fabric style.... just might take a while longer and cost a few dollars more.
The main thing is to take a lot of time to measure before you cut anything.

Here's an update..been making some progess since the two or so weeks since I've been back.
Decided to put the Gen II jump seats that I have in my garage to use. My welding skills are not yet the best but getting better..

Plate welded to the front of the frame to mount the Jump-seats.

Now if I could just get rid of that blue carpet

2.85 T-Case gears are here!
Dirtdriver's going to help me put them in next week.

need an adapter to mount the regulator to this CO2 tank that Jon sent me when I was gone..
On the List to get done these next few weeks before I get back to work.. -fix passenger CV boot -replace trans cooler line -Install tcase gears -Herc bottom of body panels -install gen II steering box -2" BL is on order, install when it gets here so I can armor the rockers. -Beef up the skidplates -Start on custom rear bumper..
-last but not least actually wheel the rig but right now its cheaper to mod than wheel...
I'm still deciding how I want to do the front bumper...I might go with someting different maybe more of a desert pre-runner type tube bumper..with provisions for a winch of course...someting like the all pro toyota bumper. ARB front locker and a winch before summer. I want to take it on the Con next summmer with 35's we'll see

-Replaced the leaky trans line last week. -Found a hood safety latch I was missing and put that on -Installed 2" RB body lift
Been in the "lab" learning to weld and making sliders. Made some decent progress. But I was waiting for my Body lift to arrive so I can figure out the proper height for mounting. Put in the body lift yesterday, but I think I'll complete a rear bumper before the sliders, as I just cant stand to look at the rear with nothing on there and I hate seeing low mounted stock bumpers. I'll post some more pics soon.
 Tac'd together..

Hiding my sub par beads with the grinder.. I think they'll hold..Im not ready to weld on suspension components yet but these sliders should give me some practice..

Looks awesome Justice! Looking forward to more pics as I'm in the bare-ass boat with you since I put on my BL And, yeah, it looks terrible. I see it every morning when I go to my truck. Since it's too tall to go in the garage now and I back up my driveway.

Here's my dirty T-case out before the trip down to Dirtdriver's house. Thanks to his assistance the gears are now in and the T-case is in the Montero. Man what a difference. So thats what I've been missing all these years...whoa!

The body lift came promply and I installed it. Note white pucks.

Decided to put the sliders on the back burner for a little bit and make a bumper for the rear. Inspired by Don but with my own twist to suit my taste and ability. The goal was to be ultra low profle and to protect the rear quarter panels a bit.

I still have tons of grinding to do as well as drill and paint it. The frame ends will be trimmed and extra brackets cut off as well.
Need to add a small gusset to the inside corners to make a smoother turn around the corners...
The tailpipe needs to be trimmed now as well I need to see how I can move it up a bit...busy day for the cutoff tool and angle grinder tomorrow

cut off the ends of the frame and the brackets off the tubular cross member.

coat of primer:

painted and mounted:

it would have been perfect had my angle iron for the mounts been 1/2" wider the bottom bolt is a little close to the edge.

rear view, I'm going to box off the ends of the frame to cover the holes and probably add a tab for D shackles on each one. Thats a project fo another day though.

Thanks. I don't think its too bad for my first real welding project. Still have lots to learn. Sliders are next.
Tomorrow I'm changing out the CV boots on the passenger's side front axle. Then at least I can take it in the dirt in 4wd and test out that T-case.

Blew a coolant hose last night on the way back from San Diego yesterday...I forgot my tool kit that I usually have in the back at all times..gas station was of little help. No tools there to buy and the lady threatened to call the cops on me for trying to fix it in the light of their gas station I guess service stations these days don't like to help out too much temp fixed it with a dime and and a key as screwdrivers to reposition the hose clamp on a small hose on the throttle body. got out of there in the nick of time,,,how dare I break down at the gas station
Anyways, I had to pull the plenum to get at the other end of the said hose. figured I should replace all of them while I was at it, we dont want this to happen again.
Well, I figured since I had the plenumn off now was a good time to put on those valve covers I have in the garage with the correct hose outlets and oil filler cap in the right spot.(someone swapped in 3.0 with FWD covers) ...then I figured since I had the valve covers off I might as well do the valve guide seals and take care of the smoke at idle....What the hell? I thought I was just going to replace a couple hoses
Crappy camera phone pics:
cam journals look good and it doesn't look like the valve guides have dropped, good sighn but that's the only one I got off today, waiting for the seals to get here in the AM so I can do one Cyl at a time. Note the Rope.
Here's the rocker Assembly out with the compressor tool. Used the fingers of latex gloves per the write up in the archives (Pmontero?) to keep the lash adjusters from falling out of the rocker arms.

before all this happened I mounted a Nippon Denso auxiliary fan from a Mazda MPV behind the grill but haven't had time to wire it up yet..I'll talk about that after I get the Valve guide seals on and the, valve covers and hosed replaced...

2" Tubing all 45 degree angles. Sorry didnt write anything down. I just held up pieces to the truck marked and cut. Use whatever thickness you see fit this one is .120" I wanted to keep it light and with the low pro it wont be getting hit much. Keep in mind this exact design wont work without a 2" body lift.

Angelo, the sliders are for my SWB Montero (it's not a Raider). I'll be finishing those up after I get the engine back together, hopefully this afternoon. The Trailing arms are a set from a gen 2 SR I got out of the junkyard for Jon. My 89 already has 96 SR trailing arms that came with the 96 SR rear end that I scored off E-bay for $100 and swapped in last year. As you probably know the Gen 2 Arms are the same with the exception that they are a bit thicker at the weak points.

Why weld on gen 1 arms when you can just swap in Gen2's? Thats my philosophy at least. about 26 bucks for the pair at the yard I think..

Well I was making good progress today untill I got to cyl # 5 at which time I got careless and dropped a retainer..looked for it for 3 hours...Looks like I'll have to pick one up from the stealer tomorrow so I can get her back together...
Here's an old seal next to a new one. Note the hole size. Felpro gives you a couple of nice plastic sleeves that go over the valve stems while you install the seal. Once the seal is on you pull out the sleeve. It keeps you from damaging the seal on the retainer ridges.

Well, got her back together today. I accomplished a lot with the engine that I needed to get done. Valve guide seals, Montero correct Valve covers, with new gaskets and cam plugs. All new coolant hoses in the back to the heater core and the throttle body. Those little ones in the back are not easy to get to.
It sure is nice to be able to put oil in the engine with out using a long funnel now that the right valve covers are on and the il filer cap is in the right place.

I think this cam plug was the main culprit in the variety of oil leaks that I'm slowly tracking down and fixing. someone got a little over zealous with the RTV. Yuck!

A half hour of idling and look at this. No Smoke...Amazing!

Still loads to do...SR steering box and UCA's are in the garage waiting to be put on and I need to finnish the sliders and design a front bumper..

I'm currently slowing going through the process replacing my valve stem seals (work and life keep interfering ). Out of curiosity, how did you install your new cam plugs? Did you put them in before putting the rocker arms back on, or did you put the arms on and torque them down, then install them?

I put them in before re-installing the rocker arm assembly. Seems like it would be hard to get enough room pound them in with the engine in. I applied just a dab of sealent at each corner of the rocker assembly per advised in the FSM.

Got her out for a few hours yesterday on a trail not too far from here. Easy trail with some optional climbs to test out. Rear Locker works great. I still have a few bugs to work out here and there, and I need to get those sliders finnished. She runs a little warmer than I would like when crawling, nothing near an overheat but the needle creeps to half way and holds when I'm not at speed.. I think I'm going to get an extra radiator from the yard and get it rodded or re-cored to 3 rows.
Lordtrunks and or Toasty, are you guys still offering the 3 row 4 cyl/6cyl hybrid radiator for sale?

Got a couple other bugs to work out as well. More later.

Made some progress
Hooked up an auxillary fan behind the grill. Its a Nippon Denso out of a Mazda MPV that was in the yard. wired it to the batt with a toggle in the cab to turn it on and off when I flip on the toggle both the condenser fan and the auxillary fan will run. Still plan to replace the radiator just for GP..It's been soldered on before and I dont trust it..
Sliders are almost there. They're all welded up now..just need some final touch ups and paint and they will be ready to weld on.

The gas tank..yea that sure does hang low..looking at it theres no way I can see to move it up like you can on a gen2. The frame fits around it too tight. I'm planning to build a heavy duty skid for it. Hopefullly when I get some 35's it will keep out of the rocks most of the time.

I'm working on a design plan to raise the tank as well as incorporate a beefy skid plate. 34 or 35's will be my next size tire too...

Cant wait to see it..I dont think a LWB design will work with the SWB though..Mitsu made the V6 SWB tank larger than the 4 Cyl so its packed in there real tight. The only way I see to move it to the top of the frame rails would be to remove the body from the frame first. The seams are outside the framerails on the SWB V6

Reckon they could be ground down to make the room? Or maybe slid in from the rear above the frame?

Not too keen on grinding on the tank but maybe highlift the body and slip the tank in..it would need quite a lift to make that much space though. I'm just going to armor the Pi$$ out of it.

I've looked at just armoring mine too. I'm going to try to lift it first, then armor it. I'll be going with either 3/16 or 1/4 plate coming straight down from the frame with 2 135*'s to a horizontal under the tank. Kind of a box without square edges. Dunno if that explains what I'm thinking or not.

Yea..the LWB is a whole different animal. I'm going to go check out a metal recycler out here that sells scrap and see what I can find for material and go from there. Going to try to keep it as close to the tank as possible in order to maximaze clearance since I cant move the tank up.

Well, I finished putting the sliders on..then my camera batt died so pics will come later..not sure if I'm satisfied with the design..we'll see how they do. If they turn out to be rock magnets I'll cut them off and make new ones..
Also last night mounted up a 115A Alternator out of a DOHC Diamante...Also an experiment. Got a new fan clutch, I think that was the main problem with my low speed cooling not being as good as I wanted.

When I was looking at this, my non-engineer mind was thinking... since the tank has rounded corners, I could make a frame using 1" square or bent round tubing on all 4 sides of the tank. Then weld sheets of 1/8" plate steel to this frame. If needed, add 1/8" thick reinforcements strategically welded to the plate effectively making it 1/4" steel in areas. This would minimize weight while hopefully offering rock ready tank protection.

OK Got some batteries for the camera...
Sliders are now done..

They stick out a bit but are still well within the outside edge of the tires, so they should protect while keeping from getting hung up on stuff. We'll see how they work out.
Also, I scored a good looking spare transmission at the yard out of a 91LWB for 145 bucks yesterday..

Saw a DOHC Diamante in the yard and grabbed the altenator off it...I thought it was the 110 Amp unit, but after looking it up I think its only 90 Amps as the Diamante didnt upgrade to 110A ontill 98 or so..this one was out of a 95...You can see the size difference side by side. Diamante on the left Montero on the right. The pulley on the diamante unit is the same diameter but has one more V groove. I had to get a longer belt to fit over the pulley since the bigger alt sits up a little higher.

I cut the rear ear off the Diamante alt..and used the steel sleeve in the cut off portion as a stand-off to get the alternator aligned with the engine pulleys. Also drilled a second hole in the front ear to get the alt to mount lower in the bracket. I'm not really satisfied by this mount and I have thought of a better way to do it with retaining the rear ear. I have a few hundred miles on this set-up so far and it seems to work well though..It was more of an experiment. I'll re-do it once I find a 110A unit.

Ive had this metal in my garage forever..leftover from my rear bumper project on my 95 SR...Decided to make a front bumper for the 89 out of it

Cut a notch in the front of the frame for the bumper to sit in. Measured and marked.

Cut and bent,

I wanted to keep it as close in as possible to maintain approach angle. The winch will eventually be mounted back between the frame rails.

Boxing it up..That's as far as I got today I'm going to run 2" back to the wheel wells tomorrow and atach mounting brackets.

Larry -
I might have a bracket for you next week. I just bought a lot of 42 cars, one of which is a 3.0L SOHC Diamante from which I plan to claim the block. I don't remember if the Diamante SOHC has the same alternator bracket as the truck, but I think it does.
There's also a 2002 Galant 3.0L DOHC in the group. I was hoping to pull the crankshaft out of it, but I see from CAPS that the crankshaft is different from the earlier DOHC engines - not sure what's different about it, though.

I think I'm going to have someone bend a "hoop" out of round DOM for me. Nothing too high but something I can mout a couple of lights to. I also want to mount some shackle tabs but I"m not tooo sure about relying on my welds for a recovery point just yet. The bolt on ones are close to 100 bucks..more than the whole bumper costs to make ..If anyone has any suggestions on good recovery points for this I'm all ears..I would prefer bolt on that way I can put bolts all the way through with a reinforcement blate on the back side out of sight..

That's a bolt-on mounting bracket for an air or hydraulic cylinder. Find a local fluid power house...they may have a few scrap ones. It's called an MP4 bracket for an NFPA standard cylinder. You're probably looking at a bracket for a 4.00" diameter bore. They should run you around $20 -ish. New. Cheaper if you can find scrap.

Took the 89 for a Shake down run on its first "difficult" run this weekend. I was pleased. With the new fan clutch and the Dual condenser fans the Temp guage never moved. The crawler gears take the rig to a new level. I was able to move through tight turns with ease and with the SWB and 33's never touched a skidplate or a slider. Granted, Pinion mountain is a Difficult trail but on the bottom end of "difficult" in my opinion. The real test will be Holcomb/John bull/Gold moutain trifecta in the spring. I need to get busy on the gas tank skid.

The wife bought me a carpet kit for Christmas so I'll be putting that in soon and getting rid of the blue stuff. Anyone tried Dynamat to reduce road noise?

I've used Dynamat in the past on some different things and it works great, but is ESPENSIVE. Also, removability damn near doesn't exist if you want it out later. If you're ok in those two areas though, I say go for it! Rig looks great, too, by the way!

Yea that would be fun. Cant wait to see it! I was thinking of selling some of these bumpers if anyone is interested. But I need to first get the whole winch mounting thing figured out so I can make sure it all works together correctly. I'll be welding on some shackle tabs soon. I think I'm good enough to make it work. The next bumper I do, I'll put the shackle tabs all the way through the tube, so I can weld them on front and back.

First projct of the year. Albeit a small one. I got some shackle tabs from A to Z Fabrication. Fast service and good price. I chose these because they are 1" thick and 3 1/2" wide which gives me 9" of weld area.
Shackle tabs Tac'd

Welding them on:
Beads are starting to look halfway decent:

All Done, adds a little bit to the bumper, but I'm still not done with it yet...

Here's what I did today with some experimenting with a Harbor Freight Pipe Bender that a friend lent me.. The Dies didn't quite fit right and I ended up wasting about 2 feet of tube. I think they were marked for ID pipe and not OD tube. But in the end it came out decent once I used a smaller die.
I also picked up some metal for a Bumper I'm building for "plh". I'll chronicle that build in a separate thread.

I swept it forward just a bit so I can possibly mount lights to it. Not sure exactly how or if it will look right. I ran out of daylight.

Note the "Don" bumper on the white 90. That thing is built to survive a nuclear blast all 1/4" channel. I wanted a bit more approach angle, hence my pulled in design.

Yea, It's a "hydraulic pipe bender" I believe the dies are made for bending galvanized pipe which is why they dont quite fit for bending tube. It got the job done but it wasnt too kind to the tube, leaving some little dents in it.
looks like this:
I think I'm going to invest in a real bender soon. the bender isnt too bad but the dies are extra$$$. Keeping an eye out for a used one.
Want to get one like this:

Yeah, that would be nice to have. I guess you might have better luck with the cheap bender if you used a spring or mandrel in the tube.
Good to know the dies aren't sized quite right for tube

I didn't see it covered in here, what width are your tires and wheels? I am assuming those are 15's and your sig says the tires are 33's. Your truck looks amazing!

Very nice build justice, i built a similar front bumper out of i think 12in 1/4 thick C-chanel cut down to about 6 or eight wide. I should have used boxed steel like you, would have been way stronger but i had this laying around, i also built some rock sliders they hug and wrap around the rockers quite nicely i can get some pics up if you want. Are you using a 110v welder or 220v. Also did you crank the t bars any after the gen II coils, mine is soon to have a brand new 4.3 (sittin in the shop)and 36 swampers. kudos on the build

Blue print:
Buy 2"x 5" tube, 2" x 2" tube, cut and bend, weld. Use your truck as a template to adjust to your measurements. Use 2" wide flat bar stock to box up the openings. Use angle iron for the mounts to the frame. Order some shackle tabs from a fab shop and weld those on.
Grind, then grind some more, sand, primer, filler primer, light sand, paint black.
Thats pretty much it in a nutshell.
Not laughing to be an I just dont have any blue prints as I've pretty much just winged it using my 89 as a mock up to ensure a good fit. Hope this helps, the progress pics should give you a good idea

Jon, I backflushed mine and soldered up a leak myself. It's been working good since, but I still want to replace it. I replaced the fan clutch and that made a big difference. I also rigged an extra switched AC fan for crawling.

I'm not a native English speaker, so maybe blueprint was no the best word to use :P
Well, what I wanted was some measurements, some instructions on how to build the mountings so it is stronger than the factory bumper, and maybe some kind of diagram.
Looks good. I'll give it a try when (and if) I have the time.

OK jon here are the pics of the frame notch finnally:
Overall view cut an L shaped notch in the front of the frame horns. This retains the stock captive mounting bolt holes on the sides of the frame rails.

side view cut 1 3/4" back :

Front view: cut 1 3/8" down:

Dont forget this is for the 2" body lift. PLH you will need to cut strait down since you have no BL.

Installed the Shittybuilt XRC8000 winch that I got for Fathers day. I was pleasantly surprised with what seems to be a quality unit for the price. Came with grade 8 stainless mounting hardware and a nice fairlead. Controller is similar to my mile marker. I have yet to try the MM controller to see if it will work but I suspect so.

tacked a piece of 3/8 steel between the frame rails

Welded the main plate to the frame and then put some gussets on for added strength. Made sure I could still squeeze the winch in there..

Welded up after test fit

I needed to add a place to mount the fairlead, since the winch cable was below the bumper. I made a mount out of a piece of angle Iron I had.

Welded to bumper...now its time to grind.

ground and painted.

Wiring..I had no room for the control box, I decided to mount it to the sheetmetal under the grill, we'll see how this works out. I thnk I'm going to rewite with an in cab controller soon.

Pretty much done for now. I'm going to get some synthetic line soon and an aluminum haus(sp?) fairlead. I think It will look a lot cleaner once I do that. Plus I'll get my approach angle back.

Here's the side view. Its about as high as up and as far back as it can be without cutting the sheet metal and relocating the trans cooler. Its cenered between the frame rails so I think thats good.
Cant wait to test it out Just from playing around with it, its a lot faster than the 12K Mile Marker on my 95.
EDIT: picks not working..I'll have to figure out why later..

Quick update...
The wife put some new shoes on her while I was in Afghanistan. 33" Goodyear Duratracs boy are these nice on the road..We'll see how they do in the rough stuff soon. I think they'll do well.

I had an exhaust leak in the muffler since I hit it in a rock in Big Bear when I was out with Nick R, Ghostraider, and Dirtdriver last year. I had the muffler shop tuck this one up closer to the body. The 2" body lift gives you some more room to work with. This muffler has a nice tone to it not too loud but has a little bit of a rumble to it.

Also, I had a radiator that Ghostraider sent me, It looked good but I had it rodded out just to be sure and put it in. Too bad the guy put the side pieces on in reverse and I had to fix it myself. I took the time to re-drill the mounting holes so I could lower the radiator 2" to compensate for the 2" BL. Now its running with a full shroud as it should be.

I've been reading a bit about cooling systems, and its amazing how much efficiency you lose if your running without or with only half a shroud. Something to consider if your running a body lift without dropping the radiator.

Justice,
What muffler are you running? I'm running a Magnaflow on the Trooper behind a header, and it sounds pretty annoying sometimes with the 2.6.
Also, were those tires pretty reasonable? I'm trying to decide what to get for the Trooper.
Thanks.

Muffler is a Flowmaster. Its not too noticeable on the street but when I took it out on the dirt at Palomar Divide it had a definite rumble to it when I was putting around in low range.
The Duratracs are pretty cheap comparative to BFG MT's or The Wrangler MTR's. I see tire rack has them for 153 ea for 33's. Not sure how durable they are, but the neither the BFG's or the MTR's Ive owned have impressed me with sidewall durability as I punched holes in both. Only with the cheap General Grabbers I had was I never able to poke a hole in the sidewall..Go figure. The traed compound on these seem a bit flexible, but that might be due to the siping. I bet they would be killer on the slickrock in Moab.

That's cool. I found a set of "70-80%" BFG ATs on CL I'm going to look at tonight. I'll be interested in your experience with these tires. I just wish they offered them in a 33x10.5.
Thanks for the muffler info.

Small project this week but its progress. I put in a set of Hella Conversion headlamps. I almost went with the crappy Ebay ones but glad I didn't now.

Side by side comparison

Made in Germany. That cant be bad.

These things kick compared to the Sylvania Silver Starr conventional lights..Good mod in my opinion that should be on all Gen 1's.

I think He was refering to the GY Duratracs. The selection is a bit limited with those as they're pretty new.

Thanks, JohnnyB, I've been pricing those already. As Justice mentioned, I was referring to the GYs. I'm thinking about going with the 33x12.5s.
Justice, those lights are "Hella" better aren't they (yuk yuk)? I put them in the White truck and Black truck and LOVED 'em! Glad you're wrenching away on that rig.

Welcome to the club! So far I am finding the Duratracs to be far superior to any BFG AT I ever had (not that they were ever outstanding in desert traction anyway), and at least comparable to the M/T's in dirt traction. Clearing seems to be good too, though I haven't found much mud yet. They paddle sand just like a paddle wheel too.
As for sidewalls, well I did crack one this weekend. Unfortunately nothing fun, a guy decided to drive into the side of my truck in a parking lot. Awful hard to see a tire taller than your hood when it is carefully hidden directly in front of you, I know but still...
That being said, the sidewall did crack just above the bead. The funny thing is that he hit me hard enough to shove the whole truck three feet to the left and yet the tire held air though the night. Best I can tell, some piece of his mangled grill pierced it, but the leak was really slow. As pressure dropped through the night, it cracked to a final length of about 3/4". It really was a pretty hard hit though so all in all I was pretty impressed it lasted long enough to get the truck towed home. Now Discount has that rim and will be replacing the tire. All it costs me is $23 for a new warranty. So far I think these tires were the best choice out there if one doesn't want to go full M/T, or needs better street manners anyway without sacrificing much off road.

After re-reading that...yep. Oops.
If somebody wanted real pizza cutters, you can even get the BFG's in 33x9.5's, too. Way to slice the wind.
FWIW.

Not so long ago. I sold those light for a living as well as other stuff. They are quite an improvement over most any lights you can buy. I think they still offer sealed beams upgrades too?!
Those lights you got were always a possible illegal upgrade here in California. It would depend on the bulb. 55/65 i think is the legal one. but guys would buy 90/100 bulbs and go and blind people as they drive.I sold even higher wattage bulbs than that too!
Those Hellas are quite durable Justice. You made an excellent choice.

I bought the same bulb upgrade from Dan Stern - whole kit incl relays and everything. He suggested and did some prevous forum members that the OE wiring would not hold up well to the H4/E-code Hella/Valeo bulb conversion. Hence the OE wiring would be used solely to activate a relay directly voltage direct from the battery to the new bulbs on newer & heavier wiring.
Still hadnt completed my switch over on the 89LS, suspension and brakes first! would be interested to read others thoughts on using the OE wiring

I ran mine on OE wiring in both rigs with no problems whatsoever. I did not change the wattage of the bulbs, however, and could see potentially overloading the existing wiring quickly had I changed out the "stock" Hella bulbs.

Today I put some synthetic line on the winch today.
Took the cable off.

This is the shittybuilt ne 10K rope. It has 2 protective sleeves. One that goes over the first wrap around the drum to protect from heat and another out the hook end for protection from abrasion during pulls.

Polished Aluminum fairlead

Been prepping the rig for the Dusy trip coming up this week. I installed the Masterflow compressor that I tool out of my old 95. Yesterday I dropped the diff and today took the ARB airlocker out of the Gen 2 housing and installed it in the 89 housing. Got backlash set right at .005 on the first try..

Tested to 100 PSI and no leaks.

Got the diff bolted back in and the passengers side suspension back together..tomorrow, re-assemble the drivers side axle and related parts and done..whew...

hi justice, i have been looking on the net for some time now for some that has done a diff swap from a later model ie.. gen 2. and i came across your build thread, i just wanted to ask you if you had any problems at all with the swap or was it pretty strait forward? i have a 89 gen 1 V6 auto LWB and my diff is cracked so i want to swap it out but i can only find a gen 2 diff. i have heard they are wider than the gen 1 but am unsure. your help would be awsome.
regards from australia,
Mick

sorry for dbl post, but i found your diff swap thread and read all about it. doesn't look that hard to do and the extra 1 1/2" wide track is not that noticeable either.
your truck looks awesome by the way, gave me a few ideas to work with. i love the montero's/pajero's(aus model) they are a better 4wheeler than alot of people think.

Mick,
Welcome to the wire. No problem with the diff swap its a bolt in swap. Scroll through this entire thread and there's a link on one of the pages to a detailed write up on the diff swap. this should get you the info you need.

thanks justice, i found your thead link, good write up and pics. unfortunately my diff housing cracked all the way through now and i have had to replace it with a standard 89 diff, the good thing is that i found one that has the LSD that i have in the broken one and its out of a V6 auto too so its the same ratio. i will be one the hunt for a later model one anyway as i want to do the swap but i have not seen any here for sale with the locker in them as they are hard to come by over here. but i will keep looking.
