new gas tank
      #945843 - 12/05/06 12:23 AM

okay, so the new gas tank is finally in the sporty. and it really wasn't that bad. i'm sure everyone here has been under their sporty enough times to know how to take the tank down(just a few bolts)and disconnecting the fuel pump from it's wiring harness was easy. i've read a few horror stories from the guys up north on how difficult it was to take the screws out that holds the pump in place, but my brother and i had no problems(southern truck, fortunately.) the only real problem we ran across after the pump was out, was trying to put it in the new tank. the internal splash guard in the tank was in the wrong place. i think i got a tank for a newer model sporty. we modified the new tank so the fuel pump would fit. if you run across this problem and have limited funds(as i do), then you make do with what you've got. so, we cut the internal splash guard all the way down on one end and one corner with a set of tin snips, then used a hammer and a rubber mallet to bend the metal down flat so the fuel pump would fit. now, before anyone bashes what we did and tells me it shouldn't have been done that way, keep in mind that i couldn't afford to buy another tank and wait 2-3 weeks for it to be sent to my home. the old tank was already out, and we already had a new tank, so we did what was necessary to put it together. after the modification to the inside of the tank, re-installing the pump was easy and putting the new tank in wasn't that hard. if anyone wants more specific info, just let me know, i'll answer what i can.

Has this internal modification influence the ability of the pump to pick gas when the car is at an angle in a hill?

Any pictures of the old tank and the crack near the drain plug?

I need to replace mine but, I'm thinking I'll try JB weld until I can scrape the funds together to get a new tank.

Logan, may be worthwhile getting a new tank made up instead of buying one. Reason is that you have an extra inch or so in height with your bodylift that may give you an extra gallon and a bit of capacity, and you can weld in a decent sized bottom plate (3/16" steel) instead of using a tinny little additional cover plate. May be cheaper too.

Food for thought....

Gary,

Hadn't though of that. I'm going to start looking around. We got a couple of fab shops local and I've also got a good friend that is a certified welder that might do me a favor and make me one out of thick aluminum plate.

Only problem is keeping it under $200 because www.kiaparts.com has them for $150.00 plus shipping.

But the extra couple of gallons would be good......

Never having to replace the tank again would be even better...

Gary,

You are starting to sound like a Master Card ad.

Custom fuel cell for the KIA Sportage $500.
Extra couple of gallons over stock $75.
Never having to replace the tank ... Price Less!

Priceless.........couldnt pass it up.

Hmmmm, sounds like a market for this, mine leaks too. Maybe Dennis or Dave could fab one with their massive talents. I'd be in for $200 on one.

No, it's "Price Less" because you have to say it with Gusto.
