I'm trying to avoid the cost and hassle of a full transmission swap. I found an AW4 tail housing to try first. I'm hoping that the shaft will work out.
Really only one way to know for sure.

Are you saying the Gap is there because the Input shaft is too long? If so how hard is the shaft to get out and are they expensive to get machined down to work? Or is there one that will work in it.

Yep, the shaft seems to be too long. It might also be a slight housing interference. I can't tell for sure without taking accurate measurements.
The shaft can be machined down, I'm sure. You can also get different inputs, BUT you need to be very careful because the pitch of the gear cut varies over the years and you need to know what yours is.
OR... you could just get a clocking ring and use it as a simple spacer and not worry about tearing apart the t-case if you are just after a 2.72 reduction.
To be honest, I'm not intending to do anything with a Gen1 auto tranny. I just wanted to help LandRaider's cause and show you guys that there is indeed an option available. This t-case shown above is intended for my SR.

If a clocking ring is what I think would that take away the advantage of the shorter tcase? Or would it still overall be shorter?

It would still be shorter. Depending on the ring, it's probably only 1/2".
BTW, you'd be looking at new driveshafts front and rear with this swap.

It just won't fly on a SWB.
Whats the overall length from where the bellhousing bolts to the block?

You tell me. Here's the length of the t-case by itself:

Give me at least a few more weeks and I should have an answer to this one.
Quote: Actually, if you can bolt up an NP231, then you can also bolt up a KluneV underdrive! HelloooooooooOOooooo 150:1 !!!!!
Yes, on a LWB. It just won't fly on a SWB.
...Actually, it should fit IF a slip yoke eliminater adapter is used. The SYE adapter will shorten the engine-to-tcase drivetrain length by more than the 6" length of the KluneV. It will definately fit in mine, and it was on my to-do list. But for now I don't think the 4.3 torque needs the super low gears (at least not yet!). With the double-cardon center-spline rear drive shaft that I use, there's still room to shorten the shaft another 6" without creating too large a drive shaft angle. I've also got 3 degree (I think) shims on the rear axle to improve the drive shaft angle as well. I may yet do the KluneV 2.7 just for the novelty, but no rush on it yet. But all said, there should be room...

Maybe so, but, the t-case above already has a SYE and it looked like it was only a couple inches shorter than the stocker.

And how does that compare to the km148 and stock t-case? Without knowing better, it might be a case of apples to oranges. That aside, I hope that you're right Don.
