There is an article in a 4x4 mag in Australia about the addition of "Portal axle drop boxes" for land rovers. These are a bolt up addition attaching to the standard swivel housing at the front and the axel housing at the rear.
I'm wondering if this could be adapted for the IFS? gives a 5" lift and widens the wheel base. It lifts all underbody parts (better than suspension and body lifts)using this you get the lift and can return the torsion bars to normal uncranked position and use standard lenght suspension (springs and shocks).
Can anyone think why this wouldn't work with the IFS If needed I could try and post some pics of the article (FYI the vehicle was a live axle not IFS)

I've run that idea thru the gray matter a couple of times. I see much higher loading on the ball joints and a-arm pivots due to the longer lever arm of the unsprung mass under side loads. It also raise the cg quite a bit, since all of the truck mass except the wheel spindle/hub assy's. are raised. Still, for a pure crawler, I think it's a good solution, and you get a chance to play with final drive ratios in the hub...

OK eddy.. we just make a set of uberstrong a-arms.
I wonder what the mounting points look like?

Here is a link to the product. http://www.4wdworld.com.au/products/portalaxles/index.htm There are a couple of pics in the link.
Higher COG would be compensated for by the increase in axle width. You can adjust gearing so thats a positive.
I had thought about the extra forces on the IFS as the lever lenght is increasing BUT so to is the range of wheel articulation.

Why go through all that trouble and still be IFS with limited suspension travel.
All of the situations where I think this would be an advantage a solid axle, especially a solid portal axle would be a better fit. You could drop a set of mog or Volvo axles under there cheaper and easier than a custom portal would cost.
In situations where IFS really shines, high speed stuff, and on-road, the truck would be drastically hindered from the extra unsprung weight, and the higher COG.

Very true Doug.
Wouldnt it be lovely if someone made a bolt on SAS kit?
You supply your own D44 from a wagoneer, and buy the kit.
Maybe one day. I see a better alternative would be to import some more of those SUN IFS drop kits. Much simplier in the long run.

Mog and volvo axles=$$$
A montero on mog axles would be freekin sweet.
With the portal boxes with ifs, you could cut the stress on the cv and axle shafts by half or more. And you would have super low gear.

I have to get in touch with Lee_Raider to find out who did his SAS for him, I bet they could do it again on my montero pretty easily, I am really thinking about it now.
