Its been done before but I can't hardly find any info so I'll post this up as I go. I think this is a perfect mod for an IFS rig. The cost is low and the LSD isn't as possative as a TrueTrac so winter onroad manners should be good.
Anyhow I just baught a LSD for $25 + $20 for shipping, hopefully it won't need a rebuild. Anyhow it has fairly low milage and is coming with the bearings and such. I can't wait for it to arrive so I can pull it appart and check it out. The clutch pads from Toyota are a bit expensive.
These are strong units known to handle 300-400hp with high milage, so I'm betting on it being in good shape.
I'll take my time with the install and take a lot of pics and post them up here as I go.

Well I spent the day yesterday working on my partner's bathroom so I only got to open the box at the shop . I was hoping to have the time to open it up and take a look inside but I guess that will have to wait till next weekend. Till then here are some teasers.
First box open anticipation building...
Second Box...
Second box open, it appears that it is in a brocoli bag lol...
Now for the Goods. I was surprised just how small the unit really is.
It looks pretty beefy to me.
Other side.
Finally a close up.
According to the seller it has seen little usage in the last 10 or so years and was swapped out for a Truetrac although it was giving no problems before pulling. My research says that they are good to 350hp in a race application if the clutches are in good shape so I think it will be fine for what I'm gonna use it for. Apparently they only show real signs of weekness when the clutch packs are well worn and huge power is put to them. I went the the dealer and looked up the clutch parts and they aren't too cheep (about $200) so I hope this one is in good shape. The mech at the dealer said he has only ever seen one in his 15 years open and that was during his training program so he thinks they are quite strong. Even if I have to rebuild it it should only cost me about $250 total about half the price of a new truetrac.
If all goes well I can have this thing installed in my new (to me) front diff soon and then into the truck with the new rear as well.

So I tore into the LSD today and of course took some more pics tommorrow I hope to get it back together and maybe start on the diff itself. Anyhow on to the goods.
Here it is with the LSD pages from the supra FSM. The FSM is available online here
It came with the bearings and they are in great condition so I may just use them instead of getting new ones if they fit. Considering they will be in the front and not used like the rear for most of the time.
Bearing outers hope you can make out the numbers. [image]http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c56/suprathepeg/DSCN0238.jpg [/image]
I'll leave the details of taking the LSD appart to the FSM. Its really simple though it doesn't take long just keep all your parts in order. Once you get all the bolts loose the cover comes right off.
Here it is with the cover off.
here is a close up of the washers/clutches.
Here is the RH side with the clutches and you can see the thrust washer on the splined gear.
Here is a pic of the inside, the thrust washer is in contact with the little round "dohnut" shaped piece in the centre.
The good news is that the clutches are in good shape, I took it to both the dealer and a tranny shop both said it was good to go. I'm really happy, I basicly got a good LSD for $50 including shipping.
Next I get to put it in here.
Now for a question. When I install it into the diff can I leave the pinion alone and just change out the carrier?

changing the carrier should not require changes to pinion depth. You will however probably need to do some reshimming on the carrier. The Pattern should tell all.

You will leave the pinion alone.
Measure the BL value of your stock set-up first....what do you get?
step 2---mark both caps so they go on the same exact way.
step 3---remove the case with 2 crowbars.
step 4---buy ZUK a 2 way ticket to Manitoba, Canada
2 things are effected for you....backlash value and CBPL carrier bearing pre-load. Below is a sample pic of typical values you might find for the CB shims. Don't get them mixed up. Measure the shim thickness and report back. Try to push the LSD case into the carrier by hand. If it goes in easy then CBPL must be increased.

If you don't have some decent mics or calipers then order up one of these bad boys..... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=895

Sounds easy enough. I'll try and get some mics and some numbers on the diff today, maybe even get it appart. Where can I get some shims for the carrier, and how will I know what size to get?
Another question I've heard that you can put some washers in the holes for the springs to tighten them up and create a more possative setup, is this true? Would it help bring back any loss from the wear that is there? Would it be a good idea with a front diff?
