Where can I look for a list of what serial #s = what year an engine is? My aftermarket manual doesn't include them, and the page on Marlincrawler doesn't match up with what I'm seeing. Mine is something like 196775...it's kinda hard to read as engine is still in truck.
I've been looking at some used engines lately to rebuild and have encountered a number of folks who apparently just will say anything or are simply clueless.
Popping the exhaust manifold off or removing the valve cover would help but my sellers are not too keen on those ideas. A guy told me today that a (manifold-less) 89 RE engine couldn't replace an 87 R. My research on this site suggests that the real distinction is the 84/85 change in block height, piston design, ex port shape, and timing chain.
Does an RE engine have the RE stamped on the block near the engine ID?
Thanks

The serial numbers you could run at the dealership I believe. Nope; they're simply etched 22R. Last carbie year was 87/88.
There is a cast date on the pax rear corner of the block, but you have to take the oil pan off to see it, and to me it's moot. [edit] EG, I picked up a 22RE L/B this summer, rebuilt; the cast date was '84, but all the hardware is correct.
Ex manifold for EFI has the 02 sensor mounted. I don't know if Kali carbs had them or not; maybe one of them here knows.
If the head is still on, take the valve cover off (those yahoos will just have to get over it ). On the pax side, an RE will have a closeout plate where the fuel pump for a carb config lives. NOW, if you look at your truck's head, you'll see a wheel(right term escapes me) that your fuel pump flipper rests on just in front of the cam gear. An EFI won't have that; it'll have a spacer instead. Only exception would be is if someone did an EFI conversion, and simply left it in there; it doesn't affect anything.
Guy you talked to is clueless. HOWEVER, if you're looking to do an EFI changeover, and he's got all the goodies, grab 'em,the ECU, and fender components as well.
On the pax side, there is a fairly large threaded hole near the oil filter mount that's for a knock sensor. You won't see this on a carbie. Check your truck. Also, if the engine was yanked and the fuel filter bracket was left on, you'll see that too.
The long block itself will interchange, with exception to the +/- 84 years, as you already know.

My 22r has a stamp just to the right of the block number. It is on it's own little flat casting just like the block number is. Shouldn't be any secret code involved just scrape away the grease and or grime.

and for the record, all '85-95 22R and 22R-E engines without the manifolds are interchangeable, and the same internally(besides maybe a few cam differences, but they're all compatible)

Yep, yep, that's what I thought, and thanks. I meet so many people who are rarely correct but NEVER in doubt.
And Kewl, your comment about the casting year being moot (as long as it's post 84+/-)is well taken although I think there are some states where it's not OK to put an older engine in a newer vehicle. We don't care about that stuff out here in the saltmarsh. As an ex-teacher, I'd also like to give you an A for your use of the woefully-misunderstood semicolon.

Hehe! Yep, it breaks up a run-on sentence. FWIW, I don't live in one of those states either! I'd like to see an inspector take an oil pan down off an IFS vehicle!
Speaking of oil pan, make sure that's the FIRST thing you yank; what's left in the bottom tells you a lot about the engine's history. If you find TC parts in there, count on finding a whanged piston; this IS an interference engine!!
You can also use a L/B out of a 2wd. Change over the oil pan, the dipstick, and its holder. IIRC, there's about an inch difference, and you're ready to move ahead.

hmm, never was aware of any differences between the 2wd and 4wd dipsticks! the 22R i put in my '79 was from a celica, and i swapped a 4wd oil pan in and used the dipstick and tube that it came with. still reads full at 4.5 quarts

I discovered that with the JFE engine from hell. That was when I concluded idiot boy sent me a setup out of an 82 Celica. A friend had one I could look at. Ex manifold head bosses were set up to fit a 20R manifold.

Copy down the number and give the stealers a call, they'll know what year/month the block was cast--well close enough anyway, they are missing some numbers but should be able to tell you close enough to be able to figure out the year.
Yeah, it's amazing what some people will tell you....even shops that are SUPPOSED to specialize in Toyotas.....idiots.

i haven't looked at block casting numbers, but on a lot of other parts(front end parts especially) the year/month/day is cast into them.

I did the EFI swap using an 85 carbed block from a 2wd and took everything off of my 94 EFI engine. From what I understand post 85 engines are all interchangeable. You can also look for the flying saucer laser block identifier that is on the exhaust manifold side. I was also told to use the oil pan from the 4wd and also used the 4wd dipstick.

Feedback: I called the d[st]ealer and the PARTS guy told me all those numbers were the same and implied that I had a couple of rod bearings loose for thinking otherwise.

And which numbers were those?
I'm gonna tell you something--
Sometimes you need to be standing at the counter to deal with people. If they still give you the same line of BS, go elsewhere.
As a female, a retired GI (they see you coming), and as a Yotahead, sometimes your PRESENCE exceeds the effectivity of a phone call.

I hear you Margie, but sometimes I'm just too disgusted by ignorance to argue. Besides, that was my close dealer (30 miles away) and I may need him down the line for something.
Anyhow, from all posts I get that if an engine's got a single timing chain it's gonna bolt to my trans and manifolds which is what I'm after. And I suppose logically if the engine has a higher # than ~196775, it's newer than my 87 although I now realize that there's no reason to think that a newer block has fewer miles on it than the 210K I've got now.
As I've learned more over the past couple of weeks, I find I'm actually looking forward to the overhaul. I will own a STEEL rail TC guide (and new pistons) by next week. My show truck will soon be a go truck again.
Thanks to everyone.

and for purposes of a rebuild, a block that's seen hundreds of thousands of highway miles is a better candidate than something that's been beaten on out in the woods. the cylinder walls won't generally need as much of an overbore
