2.6 rebuild Q's(More, and More Updated Pics)
      #753585 - 07/13/05 05:18 AM

Updated pics

So I decided to rebuild the 2.6 I pulled out of my junk trooper instead of just stuffing it in the amigo. I haven’t gotten the rebuild kit yet. And I’ve never done an engine rebuild before this. I’m just now stripping the engine down. And I’m going to have to get the block cleaned up, bored out, and all that jazz.

So what exactly should I have done?
And what kind of prices should I be looking at from a machine shop?
What engine kit should I get?
With what parts included?
And any other info I should be aware of?

My current links for rebuild kits.

You already mentioned the major ones, also don't forget to have the crank turned and the proper main and con rod bearings. Depending on the overbore you go with your going to need to get the new pistons before the bore job so the shop gets in spec, of coure the actual cylinder condition will control the amount you need to bore over.

I had my local shop bore the cyliders .030 over and press on the new pistons to the con rods for $80, and turn the crank for $80 but I had to pay for a set of bearings from somewhere else.

I didn't see a price on allstates site nor a list of parts included.
GreenBay is a little over priced especially seeing as you have to pay even more to get a NEW oil pump.
RPM machine seems more cost freindly and the price of the Gold kit includes a NEW oil pump.

As for the pics of your engine ...kinda reminds me of mine a few months ago

I would recommend factory parts, but that's because my 2.6 has 250k miles on it's factory parts. :)

If it's an older 2.6 I would consider upgrading the upper manifold half, throttle body, intake, and MAF to the newer Amigo unit (I think 93 and newer). This alone will increase performance, though I would recommend a Delta or Calmini cam to go along with it.

As for the rebuild, DEFINITELY lighten the crank some and have everything balanced. The cost for this will be relatively minimal and the gains will be worth it.

I can guarantee you that you will need oversized pistons, get them and have the machine shop properly bore and hone to fit the new pistons individually. Usually, for not much more, they will do the bottom end assembly for you. If you have found a shop you can trust, I would just do this.

Well I just got off the phone with a local machine shop and they gave me some prices.

Bore & hone 40
Grind crank 60
Vat the block 15
Install cam bearings 15
Resize rods 30
Valve job 50
Pressure test 25
Resurface head 25
Paint the block 20 to 40
Press piston 18

250 for engine kit
includes complete gasket set, set of pistons and rings, main bearings, rod bearings, thrust washers, timing belt, balance shaft bearings (if applicable), and a set of expansion plugs timing kit & oil pump.

Anything else I should be looking at?

Prices look good?

I personally don't know the going rate of engine rebuilds, but that looks pretty darn nice for the price. Tempted to go pull a junkyard motor and have it rebuilt :), then put that in my trooper and have the one in the trooper rebuilt as a spare :). ::chuckle:: But alas, it's running too good, and it's not necessary.

The 2.6 doesn't have cam bearings. The cam rides in the head on journals and caps...Saving money there...

I just recently rebuilt the 2.6l in my '91. The priceing you listed is fair, but do not order the rebuild kit until
you have all your machine work done. This will keep you from having the wrong bearins and rings.
Pay attention to the location and orientation of the thrust washers. One other thing the have checked/done is to have the block decked.
Good luck with the rebuild
