replacing the 7M with a 2JZ
      #700985 - 03/23/05 01:07 PM

As posted before my 7M-GE is reaching the end of its life.
I found a 2JZ-GE which will be complete in a few months (missing some parts like the flywheel, clutch etc).
I plan on swapping the engine somewere in june/july so i have a few months to get all parts and prepare everything so the swap will take a few days.
My dilemma is this: does anybody here know what kind of bellhouse will be needed for the 2JZ and the 3.0 V6 gearbox (R150F ?). I can fab one myself but buying one whould sure make things easier.
I can recall reading something about a Tacoma 2.7 bellhouse that should have the same engine bolt pattern as the 2JZ. Or was it the same as the 7M?
Anybody running the 2JZ-R150F setup?

This may not be of much help, but, I think I remember that the 1JZ-GE, which was never available in North America (don't know about Europe though), was the engine that followed the 7M and preceded the 2J. It was offered with the venerable old R154 transmission, but it has the same mounting pattern as the 2JZ. So, a bellhousing from a number of Japanese domestic market cars that came with the 1JZ will let you attach an R series tranny. There is the question of input shaft length though. Although I have never tested the idea, but I believe that an R150 out of a Tacoma, with its longer input shaft, will work. You will have to live with a 3.95 first gear though. Otherwise you'll have to make a custom bellhousing. -- Matt

<BTW> The 1JZ has a displacement of 2.8 liters. I believe that it has the same bore size as the 2JZ, with a shorter stroke. The result is that it revs like crazy. The turbo versions can make sick power too, having the same bottom end as the 2JZ they are good for 600hp on the stock crank and rods. I know of a guy who has one in a Datsun 240Z that he races. He tells me that the motor sees 8000 rpm regularly

I think the 1J is 2.5 Liter, not 2.8

The JDM 6MGE was 2.8

I think

Do you already have this new engine? If not, I would suggest either a JDM replacement 7M motor, rebuilding your existing one or better yet slap in a 7M-GTE. The 7M-GE has 200 hp and the 2JZ-GE has 215 hp...not enough difference to justify the hassle and cost unless you have an engine laying around.

Wish I knew the answer to your question or better yet, wish there was a Toyota bellhousing that could mate the R150F to the 7M-GTE.

Right you are! 2491cc displacement, 86mm bore, 71.5mm stroke. I think the 2JZ has a square bore to stroke ratio at 86 x 86. -- Matt

Thanks guys.
I got confirmation that there is indeed a Japanes bellhouse that will fot, but it's still for the pull type clutch so it has the longer input shaft.
So looks like I'm gone have to fab a custom bellhouse again.

I was thinking about a replacement engine like a 7M-GTE but for several reasons I decided for the 2JZ.
1. 2JZ engines are more modern and better designed. Plus have lower milage. And better economy.
2. 7M-GE and 7M-GTE engines over here are raced pretty hard so the majority is dead or duying. Plus they are all high milage engines since production of the 7M stopped in '95 I believe.
3. The pricetag is about the same since the 7M series are in high demand.
4. I can swap it for my ARB locker plus new compressor and maybe a small donation. I also just build this guy a 2WD rearaxle with disc brakes and I will mount my(his now) ARB in his supra. I'm curious what will break first.
5. The 2JZ has more torque.
6. After driving turbo yota's for more than a decade I can honestly say that turbo's break things fast. Smooth power is what I want.
7. Swapping is fun.

Here in the States a used 2JZ_G engine sells for between $1000 and $2000. The Japanese Importers offer that engine, with less than 75k km, for $1350. Low mileage import 7M-GTE's are $750 and a 2JZ-GTE is $2750!

The 2JZ-GE looks like a good candidate at $1350 (1043 EUROs), but, I've heard that the engine control wiring is much more complicated. If anybody knows more I hope they will speak up. -- Matt

Unfortunately the prices in Holland are about twice the US prices. small country and not much import.
Engines can be found cheaper but most of them are without ECU, cut up wiring etc. And those parts are hard to find, expensive and sometimes malfunctioning, no-return policy on electronic parts etc.
The guy I got this engine from (http://www.supras.nl/) has done 2JZ-GTE swaps so its feasable.
But I do not need that much power in a heavy vehicle with a lift and a few hundred pounds of accesories. It's my wife's DD and 230 hp is plenty I think.

Finally found time to get the engine.
It's from a Lexus GS300, 130.000 km and in excellent shape. The guy swapped a 2JZ-GTE and this were the leftovers.

The bad news is that it is incomplete and the injector plugs are cut-off and missing.

The good news is that I made a deal with the guy who found the engine for me and he has a 2JZ-GTE (manual) flywheel , complete 2JZ-GE wiringharness and a bellhouse for me. Plus all other parts that I need. He blew up the 2JZ-GTE engine in his supra last weekend and he is using another 2JZ-GE as a donor for parts. He only needs the shortblock and maybe the head and I can use the rest for parts.

Up to now it cost me my ARB locker plus compressor and I promised him a discount on my OEM 8" locker. And I have to do some gear setups for him.
Not too bad so far.

Did some quick measuring to compare the 7M to the 2JZ.
The 2JZ block engine is 4 cm longer than the 7M so I have to move the engine a bit further back for radiator clearance.
The 2JZ is a front sump and the 7M has a rear sump. I guestimate that this will be a benefit since my rear sumpo has a LARGE dent in it. Excatly the same shape as my front diff.

For the rest it seems pretty forward. The wiring looks simple also, only a few connections need to made to get it to run. That's what the supradoctor told me anyway.

Most likely it will take a few months to collect and prepare everything. I hope the 7M keeps running another few months so I can prepare the custom bellhouse, new engine brackets etc.
So it can be a while before there is any real progress. I'll try to make as many pics etc about all the things that fit and do not fit.
