No set plans have been made for the Summer Run thus far. --- There's been talk of maybe having it in June this year, instead of July – to avoid the heat… But there’s also been some discussion about moving the party up into the mountains, to Tellico - with no real date on the table yet, either way. --- All I can tell you is: Stay Tuned.

Well, sign me up as a tenative. If I show up, it will most likely be with a bone stock 96 Rodeo and will definately be without any real off road experience. Will I be so far out of my league that I will probably spend the weekend in someone elses passenger seat? (Not entirely a bad thing, but I have visions of driving over stuff here - will I be dissapointed?) What are the odds the Rodeo will a) be up for the task, and b) be in any condition to get me back home after the weekend's up?

OH OH!!! i get to answer it first!! Yes, your rodeo will be fine. I was told (many times ) that my stock trooper could make it over 95% of the trails with a good spotter. And besides, SOMEBODY will have a shotgun or tailgunner seat if you want to ride along for a while and get the feel of it. There are some pretty mild trails there, so youll have no problem. Oh and if you go, make sure to stop by The Outpost. They have great sausage and gravy and biscuits... -J Man, i am going to go crazy if i cant go this time!!

I took my compleetly stock 95 rodeo down there in fall of 03. There is 1 trail that u will not have any probs with (u will band your skid plate a few times but that is what they are there for). Several other trails are doable but like J said, u need a spotter and some hexnuts of steel. Then there are 2 trails i can think of that u will need to ride shotgun for... and there is always an open seat some where. U are guarenteed to have a good time if u come. Heck, alot of people with the more "advanced" rigs come mainly just to hang out with a kick azz group of people.

Robby, you saved the very best line for last!
Will,
Don’t worry – Whether you’re driving your own rig, or riding in someone else’s (or both)… You’ll have a blast!
I do recommend that you get a CB radio (even a cheap one from Wal-Mart like mine) – It’s a very handy device out on the trails. – Over and above its value as a legitimate communications tool, I’m sure you would hate to miss out on all of our conversations and humorous banter.

That was my next question.
If I had to pick my battles, what things would you guys recommend doing to the Mule before heading south? Sounds like a CB is a must have. Anything else - the ground rules are:
Something that can be accomplished by a hack mechanic in his suburban garage for under a couple hundred bucks.

If u can, look on independent4x.com and get some shackles and addaleaves, put those bad boys on, crank the t bars, and bang u got 3 inces of lift and u won't be banging skidpltes and it open up a few more trails with less cnahce of brakeage.

Will - Here it is in a nutshell…
It sounds like you might possess some of the very same concerns that I had when I initially started 4-wheeling mine…
When I first went to Uwharrie, about 3-or-so-years-ago - I arrived with an almost bone stock 1997 Rodeo… The only modifications I had at that time were a set of Rancho 9000 shocks, and some stock-sized (225/75/16) Pirelli Scorpion A/Ts – No lift, no CB radio, no spare parts… nothing.
Following the group on my very first trail-run, I went from the Falls Dam trailhead -to- Slab Pile -to- Dutch John -to- Sawmill -and back out through the Falls Dam trailhead entrance. --- Along the way, I scraped the bottom of my rig on just about everything in sight!
Mind you, that’s not to say that I did any damage to anything… Not in the least. --- But as a near-novice to the sport of 4-wheeling, every time that I heard my undercarriage make contact with the surface, I cringed – and IMAGINED all sorts of mangled metal horrors.
I soon learned that the underside of my Rodeo was a whole lot tougher than I thought it was. (Anymore, I actually smile when I hear those same metal-on-rock sounds! )
When I returned to Uwharrie the following spring, I had added a longer set of shackles, cranked the T-bars to match, and upgraded to a set of slightly larger tires (245/75/16s). --- For ME, this made all the difference in the world!
With just that additional 1.5-inches of suspension lift, and roughly an inch more altitude from the tires - I went from being a belly-dragger to the Trail Leader on that very same route as before. --- And the added confidence of this had me out trying some of the harder trails (the ones where I was a passenger in someone else’s rig on the last trip).
The returning members of this group know ALL of the trails - and more importantly, we know how to gauge whether or not someone (or their rig) is ready for the harder ones. --- If someone demonstrates a natural ability for 4-wheeling, they will be encouraged (but not forced) to push it to the next level. --- Conversely, if they should run into any difficulty, no one ever makes fun of them – instead, we offer tips and advice on how to make it through a given section (and if that doesn’t work; you’ll find yourself on the receiving end of a tow-strap if necessary).
We take very good care of our own… Especially the First-Timers – because we want everyone to feel welcome to return, again and again and again.
It really is like a family (perhaps a bit of a nutty one but a family, just the same).
And just so you know… All of my spare parts will also fit your 1996 Rodeo… so you won’t even have to worry about starting your own collection of spares - this time.
Cheers! Smiley

And apparently true to Smiley form, that's the biggest damn nutshell I've seen in a while. You probably could have said "get your a$$ down there and we'll take care of the rest", but hey.
You guys are great and have me sold. Now for the wife. Somehow I have the feeling shackles and a TB crank won't help her 'get over it' like they will my Rodeo.
Lookin forward to seeing you guys in NC.

Smiley, I GUESS u can go ahead and put me on the "wheel the crap out of and hopefully be able to drive it home" list...I am gonna try my damndest, but it will all boil down to school. But i SHOULD be able to make it if i red eye down fri night and leave early sunday morning.

Well, DOR shakles and TB crank went on over the weekend with some good results. Looks like about 1.5 - 2" of lift (I love it when the marketing material is dead on) - I'd have a more accurate number, but I got lazy and didn't bother measuring before I started. Net result is about 14" from frame to floor.
I'll be able to nail down times closer to the date, but I expect I'll drive down to Winston Salem Thursday night, then head on over to camp Friday AM. (Got family in W-S.) I'll see if I can round up some extra firewood while I'm there. There's tons down there, but it may all be rotten by now - I'll dig around and see what I can find.

I just got over here to read all of the posts, seems we have a newbie taking my trucks nickname.
Listen here WillV there's only room on the east coast for one Mule. We can hash this out on Daniel or rocky mountan loop, whoever makes it up can keep the nickmane.
Just kidding, glad you got a little altitude adjustment on your Rodeo before comming. Maybe now you won't be cringing quite as much when you hear the rocks on the skid plates.

Well, "Mule" is abbreviated - it's actually the "Lil Mule" after a particularly funny wheeling scene in a bad Michael Douglas 80's movie. (10 points to who gets it first).
(Although honestly, this might be way too easy...)

Yep, it IS too easy...
Heaven help me, but I can even tell you that Kathleen Turner's character was named 'Joan Wilder'.
So let's just skip right past this one, and instead have someone name the NEXT movie that they all got together to do.
Extra Points if anyone can connect one of the actors to an actor in ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ in 3-movies-or-less!
(BTW: The ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ reference puts this back on-topic, because we always have at least one S&tB Quote Session, via CB radio, while we’re out on the trails! )
[EDIT]
Speaking of which...
Is anyone actually going to BRING a copy of S&tB this time, or was that just talk?

Danny Devito (Who was in both Romancing the Stone AND Jewel of the Nile) was in "Johnny Dangerously" with Dom DeLuise, who was in "Smoky and the Bandit II", and "Cannonball Run", which of course gets it in 1 and 2 movies respectively.
Does that count? (And yes, I cheated.)

Im assuming you are planning on having the projecter screen this year, if available? last year, i remember thinking, "projector screen? why?" but then when i got there and saw what kind of stuff we were to be watching, my mood changed. Especially after the awesome video that Pete made. -J

can you believe I have a very difficult time finding anyone who will watch it with me with any amount of enthusiasm? - buncha lame-o's.
put me on the 'maybe' list, as April is too far away from now and my life has a tendency to 'happen' whenever I try & make concrete plans.

Well, technically that’s…
(1) >>> Danny DeVito in ‘Romancing the Stone’ to…
(2) >>> Dom DeLuise in ‘Johnny Dangerously’ [Always loved the newspaper that said: “It’s Fargin’ War!”] to…
(3) >>> (almost anyone) in ‘Smokey & the Bandit II’ to…
(4) >>> (almost anyone) in ‘Smokey & the Bandit’
Close, but no cigar!
Extra Credit if you can tell me the name of the THIRD movie that the ‘Romancing the Stone’ cast did together.
(And NO CHEATING this time! )

The last time that I talked to Pete, it sounded like he was planning to come in April… But until he posts-up in this thread, I can’t say for sure.
Someone might want to bring a DVD player & portable TV (or a DVD friendly Laptop), just in case.

uh, i could bring my PS2(built in DVD), then we could go four wheeling in Grand theft auto: San Andreas (one first gen trooper in there, monster trucks as well are in the game)
But anyway, talked to the folks last night, they said we might be able to make it up there. So it looks good for me to go wheelin with the troop. -J

I’m not sure if anything will come of it, but I recently noticed in a photo that the Mitsubishi Montero SR’s alternator sits on top of the motor… It’s possible that the same alternator bracket could be modified as necessary and used on an Isuzu (maybe).

As some of you may have already read over on the Isuzu Talk Forum… Lisa (The Turtle) was involved in an automobile accident this weekend, and sustained some rather serious (but, thank Heaven - treatable!) injuries.
[ > LINK to Thread < ]
Despite this unexpected and unfortunate event, Doug, Lisa, and all of Team Turtle are very hopeful that they will still be able to attend… However, until he says otherwise, Doug has asked that his family be bumped-down to the Maybe List.
I know that I speak for our entire Uwharrie Family in wishing Lisa a painless and speedy recovery; and of our sincere hopes that she will be out there wheeling with us this spring.

Well I talked to Bill today, and as usual, his jeep's engine is on the brink of death. He still wants to bring it on a trailer though if he can find one.
My status, still depends on if I am going to Moab or not. And the Moab team is making some compelling arguments over in that thread, so I am really slanted towards that.
The good news is my rig is slowly approaching trail ready status.

The date was chosen several weeks ago…

But I think you might have our event confused with `Zuwharrie (the huge Suzuki gathering that will be taking place the week before ours)
`Zuwharrie usually consists of roughly 100+ `Zuks, which are typically broken-up into trail groups of about 10 vehicles each.
OUR GROUP, on the other hand, is MUCH smaller, and has a earned a reputation for clearing the trails rather quickly…

I hate traffic jams as much as the next guy (especially on Daniel & Rocky Mnt. Loop)… But if you intend to wait until there aren’t any groups scheduled to hit the trails in Uwharrie, you’re going to be waiting a loooooooooooooong time.
If you change your mind, you’re welcome to come join us.

WOW, I'm definately going to have to look into this one. I live in Delaware now, but my parents have a place on Lake Tillery that's only a few miles down the road from this. Maybe I can drop the kids off at my parents for the weekend, and me and the wife can spend some time in the woods.

Just talked to the wife and she's up for it. Now we have to work out the logistics for getting the two of us, two kids, and a weekend worth of camping gear from Dover, Delaware to Rockingham, N.C. in my truck. I guess we will have to bring the van too.
Anyway, put us down for being there. Just have to make sure the grandparents schedules are clear that weekend, but shouldn't be a problem.
BTW, our 10th anniversary is that weekend (Apr 16). How sweet is that, I get to spend my anniversary in the woods instead of on some overpriced Cruise Ship.

So what's the camping situation? Does everyone have to reserve their own spot or is it shared camping? More info on this please.

OK… Generally I would tell you all about the shared camping that often takes place, where we typically reserve somewhere between 5 and 10 sites among us, and then go from there… HOWEVER…
Dude… You’re going to be there with your wife on your Anniversary for Pete’s sake!
Are you sure you maybe wouldn’t like to have your own campsite?
[EDIT]
Seriously... If you'd like to have one that's near-enough to the rest of the group, but still affords a bit of seclusion, I would suggest #33.
[/EDIT]
Cheers!

Jordan, Thanks for the compliments! I can't wait till you get out there and experience it from behind the wheel. It is so much different than just riding - just watch out for those rocker panels!
Finally another yota out hanging with the Izusu Crew! I don't know how the taco will take it having another of its kind around. It might get confused - it already thinks it is a rodeo.
Smiley - Any new word on "Mama Turtle"?? Oh yeah, when you get to the outpost on thursday, pick me up a season pass.

I got the itch too. I need some 4 low time bad. some real trails. I'm going crazy.
a tough (and last full) semester makes it worse. got papers and notes and crap all over my tiny 300 sq/ft apt, endless hours of homework and studying, 2-3 nights a week workin at the bar (and one or two drinkin there )and a lot of my spare time is spent in the library.
I got lots of parts and tools that need to be put to work on my trooper in preparation for uwharrie, but no time to get to it.
but I'm not complaining, no, just goin nuts

70-something days to install cb, buy antenna for cb, dream about rock sliders and figure out how I am going to scrape up money to lift my junk 2 inches. I see some homegrown backyard fabwerk going on around here.

I heard from Janet Becker this morning…
For those of you who didn’t know, Janet suffered a major MS attack on New Year’s Eve, with some serious complications, and was hospitalized until last week. --- The good news is that she is recovering quite well, considering - and expects to be fully ambulatory in-time for the opening of the Uwharrie camping / 4-wheeling season.
Although she is using a wheelchair and a walker right now, she told her Physical Therapist that the only wheels she wants under her come April are the ones on a four-wheel-drive! – She fully intends to hit the trails by then, and has earned the respect of everyone at the hospital for her determination to make it happen.
Way to go, Janet!
She said that she would be checking-in on us, here at 4x4Wire… So if anyone would like to give her a message, simply post it in this thread, and she will see it soon.
Cheers! Smiley
PS: Miss Kathy has me busy with another one of her household renovation projects, so any updates will be a little slow in coming… but I will get to them (just as soon as The Boss lets me near the computer again! )

Oh yeah Jordan.......I just got back from Endymion(one of the biggest parades) tonight and Gene Simmons was in the parade as well as Marisa Tomei. It was too cool. Tons of beads and lots people.
Oh yeah, to keep this on topic - I talked to my dad and he is going to get me the steel for my shackles. But at the same time my sorry factory weak leaf-springs are turning S-shaped. My swap in some 1/2ton chebby's. Cheap and plentiful at the junkyard.
I might also fab up a spacer for the front. I really do want to by some OME front struts and coils, but at $200+ for just the struts, I don't know. We will see.
Might as well be 100+ days.....I wanna go wheelin!!!

Well, now that I have an operational Isuzu again, I can actually think about attending... But unfortunatlely... Those dates are the exact same dates during which I will be having a blast out in Vegas. I have a wedding to attend there on Saturday April 16th, smack dab in the middle of the Uwharrie event... so that being said, unfortunately, I will *not* be making it out for this event... But perhaps the next one - Uwharrie is always lots of fun, and I highly recommend it for all of you other East Coasters out there.

Chris,
If we don’t see you beforehand, I take it that you will be there in October, right?
(I say ‘October’ because there is some talk that the summer get-together might be taking place in Tellico, Callalantee, or Harlan… [ -shrug- ] …Who knows?)

So, how are you feeling today, Bro? --- Is anyone running a jackhammer in your neck of the woods?
Good luck on coming-up with a tow rig. --- I’d really hate for your arse to hurt as much from the ride down as your cerebrum probably does right now!

I know at the NCO Academy for the USAF, we got weekends off. Ours was up at Maguire AFB in NJ and we were able to come home to Delaware on the weekends. We could leave after class on Friday and return by 6pm on Sunday.

I am Active Duty USAF, they just happen to have slots available at the McGee-Tyson NCOA and since it is relativly close (400 miles), they send alot of us there from Seymour Johnson AFB.
I hope to get some wheeling in while I am out there, have to fix the Rodeo from the last outing (inner & outer axle shaft, u-joint, knuckle, ARB Air Line, Axle Seal...)

Its cool that we're getting all these sites reserved early. Generally, we reserve them all about half a month before go time.
Out of the three hardest trails, daniel, rocky mount, and dutch john, which is the easiest? Or, which is the one smiley crunched his bumper on, and Pete broke his CV on? (thats one crazy bipass...) Im deff. not ready for that trail... id like to hit one of the harder trails, if its possible w/out carnage... -J

I don't think Dutch John would count as one of the three hasdest trails unless it's raining.

That would be Daniel.
I took mine up Daniel (first time I ever went) with nothing but a economy lift and 285's. And to beat all I'd never seen it, and it was a night run. You shouldn't be afraid, strong is the force with this young one.

I would have to say Dutch John would be the most doable. It seems like Daniel and Rocky Mt. have more carnage.
Case in point... And that was before the hard part
I do recal seing a good picture Steve (2ndShift) took from my passenger seat right before that breakage. It was a pic of the sign at the entrance to Daniel stating "trail extremely dangerous when wet", as seen through a rain spotted windsheild .

Im guessing that was at the last spring meet?
Which trail is the one with Poseur rock (or Zuki-henge from last time)? (the rock that i recall our friend janet asking us not to post pictures about because it might get closed down/partitioned off )
So, who wants a lot of rain this time? I for one, do not...

I enjoyed the trail we ran that night, you know the one Andre used as a big slide. I have fond memories of yanking a fellow first gen Trooper up a fairly steep section (in the Troopers defense there were A/T tires involved).
I also have fond memories of Robbie slipping and falling in the mud and then getting into Smileys truck. Me and Doug couldn't even help Robbie we were laughing so hard. Then to hop into Smileys truck like he was all clean took the cake.
It'd have to rain quite a bit to get up into my big white tent.

Amen to that!
You have no idea what a relief it is for me to know that #37 is already nice & securely flanked by friends that (presumably) will not be complaining about the noise.
When I spoke to Janet, she strongly advised that we try to get our sites as early as possible… It being one of the first weekends of the season; she is expecting the campground to be fully reserved several weeks or more in advance.

Muh-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-!
If it’s raining like it was that one time, you’re probably not getting up both of the ascents of Dutch John without a winch (or a magic lamp! )

Joe’s right – It’s only bad if you convince yourself of it…
Unless it’s raining, a Trooper with 31-inch BFG KOs shouldn’t have to be pulled more than a couple of times.

Ahh… The memories…
I put a layer of plastic all over the back seat before I even let Robbie get in… However, minutes later, that didn’t stop him from basting the entire rear passenger-side door panel with a thick coat of red clay fudge when he got out. --- Several days later, it took more than 3-hours of dry-scrubbing with a wire brush to get most of it off… And I say ‘most’ because, even to this day, some of that mud is still covalently bonded to my interior.

FYI, The rain really changes things. Last spring, the "easy rider" run up rocky mount in the rain was a bit more challenging than expected. My 33" swampers needed a bit of winch work to make it up the trail. Tad's front and rear lockers barely got him up. Tad2 made it up, but went over the side of the hill and had to be winched out. David and I got some trail scars on drivers doors. Also, I spent a littel bit of time on 2 wheels. Luckliy, gravity gave me a break and I came down upright. Of course, Roy and his taco on 29"s made it fine!!

I wish it were so. I almost made it up that sticky hill. That is where my first trail damage came from. I royally chewed up my rocker and scratched up my door or that dirt berm. I didn't know that dirt was that hard? I did have to get strapped up that hill by Tad2. But the rest of the trail was good thanks to some good spotting by Tad and you and the rest of the gang.
If I would have had a locker in the back, I think I might have made it due to the fact that my truck is pretty light.
Oh yeah, right after that hill, it started pouring rain. That is when I got nervous - my first big trail, stock truck and unfamiliar territory.
Fun stuff! Can't wait for more. Starting to have withdrawals.

Sorry, I didn't realize the berm got you too. We really were trying to lead an easy run! The rain just changed outlook. Pus I think the national guard dropped a "daisy cutter" on the main obstance. I never have seen it in such rough condition.

Body damage adds character.
With the rain and me being a noob, that trail was definitely an eye-opener.
Next time if it rains, I might try it once. If I make it cool, if not, I am taking a strap. No more rocker salad for me.

This was pretty cool. I have a drafting class first period. We have computers in there with lots of good stuff on them. (including CADKEY. Cant wait to get my hands on that) as well as a dvd player. I brought in the DVD of last Uwharrie (courtesy of pete) in to show one of the guys in there that Isuzus could really wheel. We started watching and attracted more and more attention. By the end of the class, all of the guys in the class were gawking at the computer screen. Among the best quotes was "Man, those Isuzu's are bada$$!" and "Those things can really wheel!" I think the thing that attracted the most attention was robby's rodeo going through a big red mud pit. (around where i live, thats all the wheelers are interested in is mud) They really liked all of the trucks, and just couldnt believe that Isuzu's could actually wheel and look good doing it! Well hello everyone. Long time no talk. Been super busy with school and work...but anyways...it looks like Katie and I are going to make it. I need to pick a spot. Is number 40 still open? No new mods to the Troop since last time, new tires would be oh so nice but highly doubtful that will happen in time for the run . We should be there on Friday and stay through Sunday
Glad to be back, Chris

If you’re planning to bring that pop-up camper again, then #40 should be just about perfect… It’s a drive-through loop site, and a bit un-level (Neither of which are really a problem for someone with a camper). --- However, if you intend to use a tent this time, I’m not sure if you would like #40 as much.

Yeah I have a new driveshaft in her going very well. We are going to use a tent this time and I figured we would try to get as close to the group as possible

Wow!dude what a bunch of?????????
This is not mean't for you .........but a kind-of general for people comeing to Uwharrie or anywere actually.
Food and shelter is a good one..........there is space availible on some of our sites if you pm the original "owner" about space.
Food is kinda one of the ,well'.......make sure you can survive and be comfy........there are/will be folks there that can feed you............but :
1:you have to ask.....big one.........most folks can accomidate(yes....spelling is ^#$@ ) anyways a folk or 2 extra,,,,,,,with notice. 2:you have to be willing to give a little $$$ to cover it ......granted this little bit is not much and it helps to know ahead of times........you know what I mean....if someone ask's for a couple buck's for breakfast/lunch/dinner.......it is a convience to you and a burden to the people offering it....even $5 for breakfast or $10 for dinner isn't bad.
Granted most folks will not ask for $$$$$$$ if there is 1 or 2 extra for chow.......they will ask the people involved with the meal if another or two is ok........99.999999% of folk's say.........."yeah bring 'um over".......
An example : we over cook for each meal........granted it's for at least 2 people.......or 4 ....it depends on portions etc....but the folks that do this.........we know about and they contribute $$$$.................granted that $$$$$$$$ will be cooking duties or cleaning duties.......not necessarily actual cash.......\
OK I have typed and retyped for 1/2 hours and still don't know what I said....... ........
I guess the end result is you can drive 3/4 hr to food etc. but it'll cut into wheel'n and mingle time ....
anyways .......goodnight......... gotta get up early and fire up the welder........

Thanks smiley, i can be more prepared for the trip. Bansil, i'm not a candy ass i just want to be prepared. I go to alot of biker partys and their are so much food for sale it is easier to buy then tote two coolers worth of food. Alot of big events like this is sponcered to death and is like i big part show. For the beer i did not want to show up with a ton of it and be turned away. So i guess i will leave it at home bring me some dixie cups and a case of cherrwines. Well i reckon i will be packing up the "Mud Slut" and be seeing you their. Thanks for the info.

OK… It looks like I’m just gonna hafta hit some of you over the head with this one…
I reported yesterday that the Attendance List had been Updated… But did anyone actually bother to take a look and see who is coming?
I’ll give you a little hint:
It’s the one… The only… Mr. “I HATE MUD!!!” Himself
However, sadly, the infamous Franken`Zu will not be making the trip.

Oh yeah, the purple gremlins are the best ones - they got the mad skills.

Well that's good to hear ole Rubo will be making it. I wish FrankenZu was making it as well. I've had first hand experiences with all four wheels off the ground in the passenger seat. Last I talked to Rubo comming down was just an idea.

Anyway, we'll see what get's done this weekend at the bi-annual pre-Uwharrie wrenching party. I might not be a one rock bar type of guy anymore.
See you guys this weekend

What are we doing for food, and when?
A number of requests have been made for more of my Chorizo and Basmati Rice.
As for when…
Quote:
Friday night? Saturday night?
Well…
(Y’all might be sorry he asked – `cause I’m gonna answer in typical ‘Smiley’ fashion…)
Because I’m either headed into town for supplies, or back at camp cooking - somehow I always seem to miss out on the best trail-runs… not to mention all of those bullets that I sweat, worried that I might not cover the expenses. --- This is especially true of the Friday night feasts, where we usually have a much smaller group than we do on Saturdays.
Then there’s the other side of the coin… For quite a while now we’ve been asking $10.00 per-person, per meal – and then doing our best to make it worth the asking price. --- However, last time around, due to a number of factors, things didn’t work out quite as well as I would have liked… Instead of the usual ‘Meal fit for a King’, it ended up being nothing but steak with a side-order of more steak (Major Ooooops!)
There’s just no way to tell you how sorry I was about that one!
In order to prevent such a terrible blunder from ever occurring again - while at the same time, in the hope of relieving Mr. Smiley’s stress level a bit - I’ve decided to only prepare ONE meal per trip; and since there are always more people in attendance, it will be on Saturday nights from now on. --- Additionally, I’m going to see what I can do to reduce the asking price down to $5.00 per-person (Although, sadly, this means we may never have steak again).
There are a number of dishes I can prepare that, with a little advance planning, I can probably pull off for $5.00 per-person (Buying the ingredients ahead of time - that might even include my Chorizo & Basmati Rice!) --- And by only having to concentrate on doing ONE meal, I should be able to manage it without any future absentee side-dish fiascos.
Quote:
Do we need to get a grill?
Right now I’m going to say NO. --- However, if you happen to have room for a couple of large pots and pans (ones that you don’t care what happens to – just in case), they will surely be welcome.
Quote:
Or are we going to all fend for ourselves this time around?
Other than Saturday night’s meal… Basically, YES.
Quote:
I figured id just get the ball rolling, as this is usually a pretty big discussion piece this close to the event....
Jordan, I’m glad you spoke-up… I’ve been putting the subject off for far too long already.
Cheers! Smiley

My wife had mentioned that we should bring our turkey fryer and fry up a turkey or a few chickens since there's a large crowd. Would y'all be interested in something like that?

Cool beans! --- More food is always a good thing!
As a matter of fact, if you want to set-up and do Friday night's meal, you'll hear no complaints from me
I'll have my Turkey Fryer there too, as usual (although I've never used mine to do a turkey) - and we could probably get Mark to bring his Fryer as well. --- If you were to do a meal for everyone on Friday, with anywhere between 25 and 40 people to feed, I dare say you might need all three of them!

I will be bringing food this time for me and Joey. I will partake in the Saturday meal. I know Joey won't. I'll prepay. I had thought that the prepay would be a great thing as far as one person buying all of the food for a group meal.
Other than the Saturday meal I'm bringing food for me and Joey for Thursday and Friday night. It will be something I can take home if there is a fried turkey meal for the group on Friday. Sometimes, the best intentions don't work out for one reason or another.

No problem!
Joe (BigPoppa) will be bringing Joey, his 4-year-old son again, so we were already going to be watching our language on the CBs and around camp.
(Joey celebrated his birthday with us at one of last year's events)
If your children like to 4-wheel, they are sure to have a good time - and there will be plenty of alert eyes watching, just it case the ones in the back of your head are momentarily busy.

[ Campground Map Updated ]

There’s still no word as to who reserved #40… and now you can add #34 to that list as well. --- But I can only assume that whoever booked these campsites is part of our group, since absolutely no other reservations have been made anywhere else in the entire upper loop.

OK - I may try to take my niece and get some friends who have kids to go.
If able, I was thinking campsites 43 &/or 44 would be good for kids being able to sleep through the night - good or bad idea?

From my experience 43, 44 and 45 are pretty loud. They are right across from the bathrooms and the walk way from the other side of the campground to the bathrooms goes right through the middle of them. They are also really close together and 'out in the open.' If you don't care about privacy or people walking right next to your stuff they'd be perfect for the late night "Daddy I have to go to the bathroom" trips.

Jessica is right… Unless being very close to the restrooms is your #1 priority, due to the noise and traffic, you’ll probably want one of the other campsites.
If you’re willing to do without electricity, you might want to consider getting one of the tent sites (#46 - 49). --- Those are a few dollars cheaper per night - and quite a bit more secluded - while still being a reasonably short distance from the bathhouse. --- However, they are mighty close together, and there is no guarantee that a noisy group won’t rent one or more of the remaining sites. --- Ideally, if your group were large enough, and you could justify renting all four of them, you would be almost 100% assured of a nice, quiet, undisturbed night’s sleep.
If you want to have electrical hook-up, AND have a quiet place to sleep, my suggestion would be to get either #19 or # 21. --- The down-side is that you would be some distance away from our group, but it would put you directly across from the Site Host… and believe me; Janet does not tolerate having noisy neighbors.
HTH!
Let me know what you decide, and I’ll update the map & attendance list.

I did say people. I realize there are those that don't have kids OR don't care what kind of language their kids hear. That's fine, but I choose to care. I know there are times people slip and that's fine. Just asking people to be somewhat sensitive.
Honestly it's the CB mostly. When wheeling, people forget that I have my CB turned on as well. Joey's at the age where if he hears a word he doesn't know he'll be asking, "What's that word mean?"
I don't want to miss out on all of the friendly banter that goes on.
Thanks, Joe

Geez people lighten up a bit. I didn't mean to put a stop to the posting going on here.
Just to get the friendly banter going already, let's make sure people have some spare stuff this time.
Like Smiley's list would look like this:
Two extra alternators One exhaust whistle A belt tightening gauge
Paulevans76:
Cv joint a leaky propane tank
Pete (Is he comming this trip?) second gen CV joint.
Anyway that should get it started.

I was really trying to do a bit of stirring with the spare parts list. I can't believe Smiley didn't make any comment at all on the 2 spare alternators.
Anyway my spare parts list will be a couple of CV's and tie rod ends. And an aluminum 3 hole header gasket, in case mine decides to crater like it did on the way home last time.

hey all, i haven't posted in forever, but i'm still trying to make it possible to come. the problem is money. i have none. i've been avoiding taking my cv out to look at it, becuase i'm pretty sure it shattered on my last uwharrie run in november. it happened right at the very end before i left to go home, and i've been too afraid to check it out. yes, i know i should have listened to you all last july and october when all that loud popping/cracking noise was eminating from my front end.
new one cost $240. i have $0. local friend may have one i can get dirt cheap, but i only have $0. still trying to find $30 for trail pass. did i mention i have no money?
then there's the campsite, food, gas at $2.07/gallon, etc. and i have only $0. we owe $1500 to uncle sam, due at the same time of trip.
may have to deliver pizzas or something for a few weeks. still trying to work it out. assuming i can find a little money, is it possible for one of you to let me pitch my very small tent on your site for friday night? then i'll only need money for food (crackers and vienna sausages), gas, and trail pass. of course right now i have $0.
hope to see you all there

Don't go new. Pull the shaft and take it to an axle shop for rebuild, shouldn't be any more than $100-$150 depending on what needs replacing.
As far as pulling the CV-shaft, well, every 'Zu-head should experience that exciting challenge at least once

thanks for the encouraging responses. i'll know more about our financial situation in a couple of weeks. i've put this event high on my priority list. if i miss the april trip, it will be october before i can go again. baby due june 12, so the july trip would not be wise for me. thanks again.

Wareagle, I could always just drive out there, the F250 im quite sure wouldn't do that bad on a few of the easier trails, just long (158inch wheelbase). Also if he does fail chances are pretty good i will still come as i was planning on trialering his trooper out there.

Well, the 60% Chance that you mentioned earlier is a smidge too high to qualify you for the 'Maybe List', so I've gone ahead and put you down on the actual 'Attendance List'.

I should have another person coming with me in a 98 Tacoma. Just thought I'd inform.

Robby,
Bro, until you say that you’re not coming, I’m gonna leave your name on the list… If for no other reason than just to haunt you - and maybe keep you awake at night, thinking-up ways to make it!
Great to hear it, Mark!
