recently adjusted my valves and timed and adjusted idle speed. it seem when im crusin about 35-45 when i hit the gas i have absolute no midrange. I have to push to floor to get something out of it. the engine doesn't really rev either. it used to rev high out of 1st gear to shift into second any suggestions?? I also have a complete 2 1/2 exhuast and downey header{Probaly the problem)oh ya its a 22re automatic tranny. if i short out my timing connectors the idle slows so i think my tps is working properly do you think this is an engine problem or tranny

Them autocrackaddict trannies have a linkage that mates with the throttle assembly dont they? When you push the noise maker to the floor does the trans drop down in gear? Might be that you just need to adjust that cable do-hickie thing...or swap out for a 5-speed. As long as there are no codes present...I wouldnt know where else to start....except for the 2-1/2" exhuast. But thats me.

is it bad to constantly drive around in "ECT POWER" mode

Couldnt tell ya...all for of our rigs are manual transmissions...hell even the spare running gear is a W56!
ECT...any idea what that means? If it has the word economy in it...then it more than likely will dampen performance to a certain extext. Time to research ECT so I dont look so stupid next post! LOL

Slap yer timing light on it and watch the crank pulley as you slowly crank the throttle. (jumper removed)
Make sure you got smooth spark advance that increases along with RPM's....up to about 2500 it should increase smoothly to mabye 30 degrees or more BTDC as you twist the throttle open...if not, then there it is.
If you have a dial-back-to-zero timing light, it is easy to check total advance.
If not, eyeball it.....divide the pulley into halves(chalk), then quarters...Then 8ths...then 3rds of the first 1/8 BTDC....30 degrees is 1/3rd less than an eight. Erase all the chalk marks except the one you need and hit it with the timing light as you crank the throttle. See if that mark settles near the 0 on the timing flag cast into the oil pump when the engine is at about 2500 RPM.
If it is, your timing is advancing properly, so look elsewhere.
Sounds like the tranny is shifting properly if you have to ease off the gas to get it to upshift.....but once there, re-apply the throttle and see if it downshifts.(Don't bother if you are going faster than about 60-65 or whatever speed that is too fast for an autotranny downshift)
That done, you can eliminate timing and tranny problems.
So yeah, it could be that the new exhaust is overscavenging the heads and not providing nuff back pressure to boost mid range power....if you pulled or punched out the cat, then try to recover by reinstalling it first.

ect is an electronic controlled transmission. i think its mainly for towing it shiift the shift power high on the rpms. so it revs out 1st and 2nd and kinda trows you back...kinda cool i just dont wanna overheat my tranny
my cat is a magnaflow free flow...brand new so i dont see how that can be an issue. i really think i need to regear and go 5 speed

Yep......it also locks out overdrive.
Yer brand new magnaflow cat might be part of the "issue".
Google "overscavenging". Once you understand it, we can talk.
And remember this, "If a little bit is just right, then too much is not better."

do you think a 2 1/4 or 2" tail pipe will help. or is there something like a resonator i can throw on there that will boost some back pressure?

Sorry, but I ain't convinced yet that the issue involves too much exhaust flow.
There are still few things you need to check before you start spending money.
Slow down.....the fastest street racers take lots of time in the garage. That blurr you see on the street is the result of many hours of slow moving progress at home.
