battery problems
      #595225 - 09/19/04 07:31 PM

ok something is wrong with my battery or altinator or something that i cant figure out. i have a brand new battery, but it runs completely out of juice and i have to jump start the car after a day. the car runs absolutely fine ones i get it started, i can drive for hours no problem. but the battery is not getting charged at all. is this an altinator problem, i would think its not because the car runs fine and it needs the altinator to run. any advise?

zjeep,
It's more than likely the altenator.

could a really old wire cause this problem, im pretty sure the positive and negative wires are original and they look like hell.

if you have a volt meter fire up the car hit 2-3 grand a couple times then let it drop back to idel and check the battery voltage. it needs to be above 13 volts. if its below rev it up to 2 grand and check it there. if at 2 grand you are under 13 volts the alternator is putting out nothing. old wires shouldn't cause the alternator not to charge, but cleaning the connectors and post terminals might fix it if you have voltage drop running to the regulator.

so the alternator can put out enough power to run the car but not enough to charge the battery when its going bad? and also when i run the car with the lights on it starts to run really crappy.

Howdy 94
Like sunder said, check it with a voltmeter... I think Ratshack has em for 5 or 6 dollars. Every grown man should have at least ONE of them.. (don't ask)
If it runs ***** at two grand with the lights on then it IS the alternator most likely.
At idle with a bad battery and the lights on it should run *****... Then with a good alternator the the engine should run Ok with the lights on at two grand.

Or, after a short drive and the juice if fine when you turn it off and the next morning it is dead, it could be a + wire that has a naked spot on it grounding out against metal - draining the juice-box. Just a thought. My old CJ done this; I finally found the naked spot that was at the end of the front drivers side parking/turn signal light. May not apply - just my thoughts.

Later!

i bet the regulator is fried, or the slip rings are toast.

does it have an external regulator?

Next time you have to jump start it, after it is running, pull the positive cable off the battery terminal. If it dies, your alternator is toast.

ok with the lights on the higher the rpm the worse it runs. i charge the battery and it starts fine, just every time i start it it gets worse and worse until the battery is finally dead. and i dont know where the regulator is, i dont even know what the regulator does, what is it? it really isnt charging the battery at all, and after sitting over night the battery has almost no juice left.
