Scary steering
      #345298 - 09/04/03 08:44 PM

As I have been contemplating crossover steering setups, I came across this site. Holy bejeeezus!!!! I have never seen such idiocy in my life!

Words cannot describe my thoughts right now...

I guess these setups just have to be strong enough to get on and off the trailer. It makes me wonder what the judges look for. Must be paint and chrome. These things should be called ugly sculptures instead of trucks.

If you ever feel like you do shoddy work, just take a browse through that website and you'll feel much better!

I'd rather not think about the fact that I share the road with these rigs.

So what is the correct side to Gusset my new S shaped draglink?,LOL . Very scary indeed, they just need to convert some of those to hyd steering with flexable hoses, if there not to be driven on the road. or maybe that would be safer than some of those designs .....Karl

Wow... just... wow. Few things render me speechless. This has.

I stand in awe of the engineering genius featured on that page.

Fortunately, these creations will have the tendency to remove their creators from the gene pool. Unfortunately, they will have the tendency to take others with them. Darwin award, anyone?

Don't know that I'll vote for Bush, but I would say that running the foriegn policy of this nation is more than I'd like to be responsible for.

As to the rigs shown here... well... this is why:

If you're stupid, please... don't have sex.
If you must have sex, please... have sex with appliances.
Preferably appliances smarter than you.
That way if by some miracle you reproduce, chances are the resultant wiggler will be smarter than you.

It's always interesting to meet the person behind comments like the ones on that web page. While I 100% agree with the negative view of the rigs in question, I'd hesitate to say the author is exactly... gifted.

I really doubt any of the builders of the trucks pictured actually make money at their trade. Further, none pushed their builds as the way to do it, at least not that was mentioned. I'm sure they think their rigs are cool, for the most part. Some probably do think their rig is junk.

I don't hit people, for the most part. I haven't had to do anything that dumb since I was a teenager, thankfully. So, the author's safe enough from me. Contrary to popular opinion there are other ways to express yourself. I'd point out that the website itself is just barely functional, the text is really a joke, the structure is nonexistant and the site really shows what happens when you spend 20 seconds learning html. There are tables! There are cells! GASP!

Woah... there are even calls to image files.

OK - lets let fly. The site's a joke, wholesale. I hope you never have to look at the code, ever - it's a mess. The only thing applied to it is ignorance. No standardization or organization. If you ever had to run a real site your brain would explode in a very small cacophony.

I don't know who wrote this site, and frankly I don't care. I really don't hold anything against them, at all. It's nice that someone takes the time to say 'Don't let your rig end up like this', but I really think it could have happened with less 13-and-angry attitude. It's really cool that you know something about steering geometry, and maybe you can actually do the hard math involved that tells you how much of what material you need where given the forces involved. Excellent.

But the rest is just waste and shows things you don't know. But hey - it's your site. Just like it's their rig. Beauty of this country.

Who cares about how well his site is built? It's not meant to be flashy and well written. It's a bunch of pictures and text, and it works just fine for what it does.

The guy has a strange sense of humor, and personally, I think it's hilarious.

The point was - no one likes insults, and everyone has a weakness.

I doubt many people enjoy having their weaknesses exploited.

Actually Javven you might be surprised to learn that Robert Cannon is a sys admin for the University of Texas. That is how he can afford one of the baddest Tacoma's around AND a BMW M Coupe. The site is a joke, he just tosses pictures up there when he has the chance, I don't think that he is too concerned about whether it is well-formed or not.

People send him the pictures and he puts them up, he even has pictures of an older version of the steering on his own rig that he makes fun of! It is all meant in good fun... unless you are the owner of one of these death traps. If that is the case I suggest you spend more time engineering your rig and less worrying about other people's websites.

LOL. System Admin's don't impress me. Neither does a University position.

I also imagine at least half the people he directs his attitude towards don't have the money for a BMW or a professionally done lift/setup. I admit it looks like some of the trucks were for show only. Great fun to drool over when you're ten.

Heck, Santa was a lie but when you're five he's pretty cool.

I'm real glad he's got an informed opinion about something, and like I said - he's free to put whatever he wants on his site, within the bounds of the law - and he hasn't broken any. I'm also free to point out mine, which is that his attitude runs somewhat past humor and into cruel insult to people he doesn't even know.

As it stands, I'm not interested in wasting any more of the effort it takes for my fingers to type in this subject. My objective, and I think fair opinion has been stated. There is no excuse for the kind of bad-mouthing going on there, but I'm not trying to stop anyone. I spent too long defending the Constitution of the USA to do that.

People that come on this board and spout off about other people's websites don't impress me. How about Robert's car, truck, or bike? Do those impress you? In fact, why don't you show us what YOU drive, tell us what YOU do, and give the link to YOUR webpage.

I'll play. I am a geophysicist, my website is 4x4Wire's Toyota Section , and my truck is so well engineered it doesn't even run.

If you want to know about the steering on my truck, just check out 4x4Wire. I have written several articles detailing the steering I used for all the world to see (and criticize).

The steering setups shown on that site are poorly engineered and deserve some "bad mouthing" in my opinion. Maybe I am so defensive though because I know Robert personally and appreciate his sense of humor.

It's obvious you recognize a joke, and marginal code, when you see it! Good for you! Thanks for clarifying that you have no intentions of punching me and thanks especially for identifying the content as "13-and-angry attitude". Having reached the age where I've obviously peaked as a viable organism, I find both of those comments immensely comforting!

It's also satisfying to have the support of friends in a public forum, but I have a couple of admissions to make... While I am, indeed, a sysadmin at the largest public university in the country, I am widely regarded as one of the most incompetent (I mean, for the love of god, just look at that HTML!) You have to love a system in which an over-educated marginally-competent, over the hill slacker like me can thrive! It's also true that, through no skill or exceptional effort on my part, I'm fortunate enough to possess some really cool toys. I think we're all aware, though, that a person's career and/or possessions don't make them special or cool, especially in my case. No, what makes me special is my freakishly large genitalia.

I saw something on that page I was guilty of (taking spacers to compensate for a longer steering shaft "gawwd dayam, git me a bag o dem washers paw...hAA HAA!!), but its all good, I used grade 8 bolts...HAHA!

Ouch... If this is found to be off-topic, then I would agree to move it to off topic. I thought that it was very relevant to off-roading, however, as I was doing various searches for different crossover steering solutions when I came across this. This site could serve purpose here as a way NOT to do things.

As for "Flame-Fest 2003," I am still unclear how it happened. I would feel real bad being the one who started the topic that got another member banned, even if I had no control over his actions, or the direction the thread has taken. My computer crashed, so I haven't been around for a few days.

So, the mods have a few decisions to make at this point...

1. Move the thread.
2. Delete the thread.
3. Leave it be.

-and-

1. Let the bannings begin.
2. Let this serve as a warning, and put some people on the watch list.
3. Let the board get out of control.

I refuse to get involved in the flame fest, but must make all members aware that I will delete this post myself if it gets any worse in here. Maybe some people should review the User's Agreement that they agreed to when joining the forum.

Please... LIGHTEN UP, EVERYONE!!!

Robert's page serves as a great education on how not to do steering. So posting it was perfectly fine.

The problem is with people (err, a person) who feels a need to attack him because his page wasn't professionally designed. That was uncalled for.

Talk steering, if you have OT stuff post it in the OT forum. Can the personal *****.

I agree that his humor can be, to some, cruel. But it's just his okie ways, and personally I find it highly entertaining. But he can take it as much as he can dish it out:

"That back seat looks like the previous owner sacrificed a god-damned goat back there and, judging from the hoof marks on the back of the seat, had sex with it first! (I can already hear you f***ers snickering and saying to yourselves "And just how would he know about the hoof prints on the seat back?" Look, I'm an Okie, we know these things.)"

Remove your front blocks, the 14 unnecessary shocks from your rear axle, and the row of washers holding your steering shaft together or develop thick skin to protect you from "over-educated marginally-competent, over the hill slacker's with cameras and webpages like like Robert. Personally, and I may be wrong but life is too short to be so sensitive that you can't laugh at yourself.

Maybe I don't get out enough but that's the most hilarious site I've seen in awhile! My stomach still hurts and tears are still running down my face. The pics are funny enough but the commentary elevates them to a new level. Who cares about the code when you're doubled over with laughter? Plus, it's educational! Besides, that pooch did a decent enough job on the code, considering how a cattle prod can rattle your concentration... Robert, I hope you both keep it up.
