Engines: Breaking an engine in.... dino... or synthetic oil.
      #205316 - 03/11/03 03:40 PM

So whats the deal here. I have heard that syn slow the rings from seating right. But some of the nice cars (vettes) run mobil 1 or some other synthetic right from the assembly line.

I already am going to be seeing a decent break in time... due to my chrome rings.

Whats your opinions on this?

I used Hastings chrome rings, and was strongly advised by my machine shop (and on this board) to use dino oil until after break-in.

Dino = Dinosaur Blood = normal from-the-ground oil, not synthetic.

DINO. Chrome rings are hard enough to get to seat even if you use straight 30wND for the initial break in. I personally prefer moly rings to chrome, just for the better break in, because I think it gives you the best long term seal. I also think that moly rings convey piston heat to the cylinder walls and the water jacket behind them better than chrome rings.

I do have the moly rings that came with the pistons... they didnt have any bare pistons in the us... only sets. So for 18 bucks more I got an extra set of rings.

But what about all the manufacturers that spec Mobil 1 for "factory fill"? not to sound like a commercial, but I have wondered that for a while, I have always heard Dino, but that got me to wondering, as I am sure that Mercedes and Porsche do not want customers complaining that their 80K auto is smoking.

Tighter fitting pistons... special way they crosshatch during honing... ??? Got me. Maybe they come ready to go from the dealer... already broken in at the factory.

A lot of high end German car pistons are Mahle alloy. The most sought characterisitcs of the piston aluminum alloy are a ductility for forging, tensile strength of the fianl forging, and coefficient of expansion for piston fit. Mahle alloy has very good characteristics in all three areas. They use a very tight piston fit for NVH reduction and to keep the rings surfaces dead perpendicular to the cylinder wall (because NO piston rocking). That may have something to do with the Mobil1 reccomendation, or it just could be a case of "the owner's too stupid to figure out a change of oil type - let's not confuse him".
