Hi!
I need your help.
I have a 1990 Montero & I am having a EXTREMELY difficult time finding brush guards/tail light guards that fit the model year!!!
Does anyone know where I can find these? I really want to add these to my vehicle! Please help if you can! Thanks. Mike

Just so you know, neither are for fourwheeling, and the brush guard is bad news in auto accidents as well as off-road. Not sure if anyone makes these items anymore for Monteros.

Lloyd's right although I don't speak from experience with my Montero. Any offroading through the woods and you have a good chance of ripping your tail light guards off on trees and backing up can do the same to those wrap around brush guards. Not to mention a hit to it from an angle is likely to bend the whole thing
I'd recommend looking at the ARB bull bar which is a beefy bull bar/bumper one piece deal. Dont know if they still offer them in the US for Gen1's and I'm pretty sure you'll have to do some hacking and welding to make it fit a US Montero but a quick call should set you strait: http://www.arbusa.com
I know that Don on the forum built his own bull bar/bumper and he's made some for some of the members: http://www.4x4wire.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=69;t=008107#000000
If you insist here's another site that offers brush guards: http://members.aol.com/SterlingEq/guard97.htm Thats the only brush bar for the Monty I'm aware of.

Mike - It is becoming more difficult to purchase OEM parts for Gen I Monteros. Manik, http://www.manik.com, did make both a brush bar (Part #: 676951) and tail light guards (Part #: 676955) for the 1990 Montero. I believe these are no longer in production. Possibly you could track down a Manik dealer with some old inventory, or contact Manik directly.
However, I agree with Lloyd. quote: Just so you know, neither are for fourwheeling, and the brush guard is bad news in auto accidents as well as off-road.
Brush guards are usually an easy bolt-on to your existing bumper. That's a good thing, because it makes them easily removed. If you touch anything (more substantial than a wet paper towel) with your brush guard, it bends (and crimps at the bend). To make matters worse and in addition to ruining the brush guard, a minor collision will likely cause damage to your sheet metal, head lamp and side marker, etc. I had a brush guard that I removed soon after my first trip off-road.
A better option is a bull bar. This is a replacement of your front bumper. ARB made a good one (with a winch mount) that you could fit on your 1990 Montero. It was actually manufactured for the 1989 Montero, but it fit on the 1990 with minor modifications to the frame horns. It is very substantial (a true kangaroo masher). But, more bad news: I believe this one is also out of production. ARB does have one for the 1988 Montero. You can see this one at http://www.4wheelparts.com/product2.asp?imseqn=1012&occlass=BULL&cat=TUB. It may be possible to modify this one for your vehicle. ARB was very helpful when I purchased a bull bar from them. I would contact them and ask what they might have for your Montero.

I would forget about the tail light guards. They do nothing except make your tail lights less visible. I think that experienced off-roaders (I am not experienced) view tail light guards and wrap-around brush guards as stupid amateur stuff.

I agree Grill Guards and Light guards look awesome!! And they do help protect from some stuff... but yes, if you drive into a tree it will bend. But so would anything else... Good idea.. Don't run into stuff!!!
They are kinda expensive around $500 from Manik. Here is a picture of my truck:

Had a Go Rhino bolt-on brush bar/grill guard for several years; no longer made by Rhino. Looked great, made a handy tie-down for kayaks. Lost it by hitting a towed junker truck at night in a rainstorm-- No lights on neither the towed junker nor the tow vehicle! Totalled the bumper, grill guard, radiator and fenders. Didn't see that the grill guard affected the outcome either pro or con. What saved the '90 Monty from more damage was the Monty's heavy frame and front cross bar. These old beasts are built like tanks! Any way, didn't try a new grill guard.
As far as off-road utility, I agree with others that they really are not needed nor very functional. Among the things I love about the Gen I Montys is that the driver can see exactly where the front end of the vehicle is in relation to trees, boulders, etc. So, just avoid the big stuff!

97 SR: running boards removed, BFG 9.5x31 AT/KO tires, AirLift spring inserts, KYB shocks, 117,000 mi, 3rd owner.

Monty,
Nice looking truck.
The key thing with any brush guard is that they're extremely expensive ($500+) and don't protect that well.
By comparison, a custom bumper w/ brush guard would cost the same or less (probably less) and protect more.
My suggestion in this case is to have a custom bumper made.
