I'm looking at purchasing a JDM engine as a replacement engine for my current build up.
The JDM place says the engine is compatible with a 95 Montero SR but came it comes out of front wheel drive car.
Does anyone know if there are differences internally between the 3.5 DOHC for a Montero and a car?
I understand that I need to swap external parts for the engine to work but curious if internally one engine is more stout than the other.
Thanks,
~ Jon

IIRC the cams are different allowing for a different torque curve needs for a car versus montero.

The first thing I will warn about is do not buy from any of Osaka's companies. Most of them are JDM something. look up whom you are buying from to check. Sam from Osaka will F' you on anything you buy.
The Diamante 3.5 has full forged bottom end. The cams are the same but the sprockets are different providing different timing specs. If I recall the compression is higher as well. There are a few bolt holes for mounting things that are different but nothing that can not be worked with.

Thanks guys!
I think the company is local here in the NW but will check it out.
How is the torque curve different? Guess a better question would be - will the TC be better or worse for my application. A lot of slow off reading in mountain terrain plus pulling a 16ft camper?
Thanks,

Big heavy vehicles towing need a lot of torque down low. Hence diesiels. Cars are lighter and generally not towing 5K trailers so they don't.
Do not ever put a cam for a 3000 lb car in a 5000 lb truck with a 5000 trailer. You will not be happy.
BTW, the 3.0 and 3.5 blocks for the Montero are not the same as the same for FWD cars. Some mounts and mount holes are different as well as some of the bolt on pieces.

Do yourself a favor and research well who you are buying from. Better yet, get a good referral. Like Charlie said, Osaka will rip you off and not look back. They are in a few locations, plus on cleavage, but not as Osaka. JDM Engine Depot in NJ is another scumbag.

This is the place Lynwood, wa that has the engine - http://www.foreignengines.com/
Looks like it is a company here in the Northwest. Any body heard of them before?
But the consensus seems to be the engine will not work because the cam/ power ratio is different.
Any other suggestions? Not sure I'm up for rebuilding it, need a few more skills.

Yea, the website is kind of misleading. It says they have 94/95 3.5 motors for a Montero but it really means they have compatible motors.
I'm just not sure how compatible they are

Thanks for all the comments so far.
I’m still having a hard time deciding which way to go with the engine. Here’s what I’m thinking about
1. Drop truck of at shop and have engine rebuilt a. Easiest solution b. Would have a warranty with work c. 4 to 5 k, can’t really afford
2. Rebuild engine myself a. Cheaper but still expensive b. Not sure I have the skills set
3. Install a remanufactured engine a. Cost 2K plus more; in my price range b. Quality of engine? c. Feel this is within my skill set d. From what I’ve read no guarantee it would have the Montero cam
4. Install JDM Engine a. This is within my skill set b. Cheapest option c. Engine compatibility? d. Can the cam in the current engine be swapped into the JDM engine? Is it a simple swap? e. Since the front wheel drive engine develops more horsepower, how bad would it be in the Montero?
Sorry for the Noob questions but I do appreciate every ones comments and insights.
Thanks,
~ Jon
