Removing a damaged locking gas cap
      #1266767 - 07/10/12 11:05 PM

While going through a cache of keys, I found that my former methhead neighbors tried to jack some gas out of Ol' Blue somewhere along the line. Damaged some sheet metal, but also damaged the cap.

Any suggestions to keep me from damaging the neck on the filler tube? It's time to get back to some wrenching on this thing. THANKS.

Consolation: homie still isn't as smart as he'd like to think. Cracked open the drain plug on the tank; she' still got fuel on board.

Out of desperation I used a strap wrench to pop the cap off. The strap wrench gives a constant pressure around the cap and it came off without damaging the filler tube.

Can the lock core be drilled out?

It could be at risk of contaminating the fuel with drill shavings....

I'd just pry the rotating part off with some large channel locks, then jam a long-handled screwdriver into the remains and unscrew. Had to do this on my RV a few years ago.

Yeah you'd need to be sure you don't drill all the way through was what I was thinking...

Should stipulate that electric drills should not be used. Manual/hand drills only with non-sparking bits....

Go for the strap wrench. Non-sparking an assurance that you will not make an ash of yourself....

If it will come out, I would pull the filler neck off the tank hose and take it to the bench and whiz wheel that sucker off there.

Vell, a cursory look at the FSM tells me the filler box as it's called, will unscrew from the bed, but it has to be shoved downward to remove; read: screw with the tank.

Borrowed a strap wrench from the neighbor; no-go, even with a piece of sandpaper in between for some gription; it rachets, so that tells me the lock is 2/3's buggered.

Time for the brace; now to go find it.
