Well, I just did a super job of sealing the intake down, and looked over and saw the lifter box, unopened...
Otherwise, it's about ready to hoist in. Pan and oil pump and fuel pump and timing cover on. Need to put the flywheel and outdrive input shaft adapter and bellhousing on there, and it's ready to lift in and start hooking up all the misc. crap. Turns over really slick. I like that Comp Cams break in goo, and the Milodon assembly lube real well. I put the rings on the pistons without ring pliers for the first time in 30 years, and had forgotten how nerve wracking that was to do. Oil rings and top rings are easy, but you need 3 hands for the second ring - keeps wanting to jump into the top groove on the way down, and keeping the sharp ring end corners from scratching the piston is tough on the thumb skin. Used one of those nifty funnel type ring compressors instead of the tighten up kind, and it was a breeze.
Only real hard part to date has been the dipstick. The marine (cracked in 8 places) block has a pside dipstick with the entry hole in a milled recess about 2" above the pan rail. The 3970010 relacement block has a dside dipstick that starts at the deck surface, and the old dipstick won't go in far enough. Got to find a universal that's long enough to get above the hirise marine exhaust mani's. The Lokar's aren't long enough, and at 56bucks, too expensive. Thought about looking for a van dipstick for a 350, but haven't found measurment specs on one.

Got a friend that maintains a bunch of GM vans. I'll ask him to measure one and get back to you.

Well all his vans have 4.3's. Might be the same, dunno.
Somebody forwarded this video to me and I thought of you. The commentary is NSFW but the soundtrack is cute... This guy's an idiot...

Not sure he even crawled out of the "pool." Stupidity like that comes from the gene mud puddle.

She's in the boat. It took a double lift to get it in. I have the folding engine crane, so the lift is a tad short, and the hole in the boat is deep down. We had to hook a real short chain to get it over the transom, and used a double layer of 3/4" plywood on concrete blocks for a temporary landing pad, about 28" above the engine mount pads, then rerigged with a comealong on the crane chain, and set her down and aligned it with the outdrive. Finished dressing the front today (alt., w/p, p/s pump, p/s cooler, water filter for the fuel, 60a breaker), installed the dizzy, starter, and started draping the controls and wiring harness back over the motor. All that's left is the exh mani's and risers, hooking up controls and wiring, plugs, and set the timing and idle mixture. Rebuilt the quadrabog carb while it was at the machine shop. Goal is water by Mem. Day.
Trying to figure out how to seat the rings without wheels. I use the rev to 5000, then coast down, and repeat method on wheels. Anybody got a clue on boats? Using straight 30w non detergent for the breakin, with Crane Cam break in additive. The new cam and lifters and pushrods and rockers all have so much assembly lube they looked iced like a cupcake. All the rotating parts had the red goo liquid assembly lube, and we'll crank it without spark until we see oil pressure on the gauge.

I've tried two break-in methods.
One involves cranking the engine, immediately in-gear for load at 1500rpm until fully warm, then 3000rpm for a couple of minutes to make sure all is good, then WOT for a few runs. Although the one engine (351 Ford) I broke in like that was a great engine, I wouldn't recommend the method.
The traditional method covers about 20 hours:
After cranking, don't idle long - get in-gear and stay above 1500rpm. Vary rpm frequently, staying below 3/4 throttle, but above 1500rpm during the first 10 hours. After 10 hours, WOT only after the engine is fully warm - then short bursts of WOT and back to cruise throttle.
Good luck.
Frank

Fired her off, finally. New fuel pump (old made good pressure, but no suction), rebuilt alternator (you could watch the volts drop on a fully charged battery from 13.5 to 11 in 3 minutes, and the alt short load was so high it would not turn the motor over). The cam is not tolerant of a boat type idle speed. If you idle it below 850, it will do it, but dies after any opening of the throttle. Now at 13*btdc for idle advance (36* at 3600), and 3 full turns out on the idle mixture screws, but man, does it jump to 4000 quick when you snap the throttle open. Very interesting idle, too. Much more radical than I expected for a 286 cam with a ground in advance. This is goind to interesting when we get it in the water. I think we are pulling about 300hp if I did the math right. Looking for 60mph at 4600rpms with a 21 pitch prop. Spent today doing the last tweaking on the timing and idle mixture, and reinstalled all the teak wood that we had sanded out and reoiled (took 4 coats before it quit soaking up the teak oil like a drunk with a new bottle of Mad Dog 2020), and did some vinyl cleaning.
