1989 3.0 v-6 questions?
      #1264328 - 05/18/12 07:56 AM

Started maintenance on the 89 Raider yesterday, flushed the tranny, got new 65 series battery, put 31 AT tires on, adjusted torsion bars, aligned, flushed coolant, greased everything, the concern Im having is when you start it the starter turns slow in my opinion, at first I was thinking its the cheap ass starter the guy before me put on, but the more I listen to it start Im thinking it may be in the timing(like to far advanced) what is everyone running in there v-6s?I have also noticed it starts a bit harder after its warm which led me to believe this Ive read the archives but really didnt get a straight answer. Also are they an interference engine? Is there a way to tell if the crank shaft bolt has been changed? Is the 3.0 the same engine as lets say whats in a 89 dodge caravan?Hope thats not to many questions. Thanks in advance. METALMOVER

Re starter, try grounding coil wire and see if it cranks faster. This will tell you about the timing question. Clean all engine grounds and check starter connections.

It is not an interference engine.

The second version crank bolt is a hex head on a long skinny shaft, then a flange on the pulley face, then the threads. The hex head will be out near the front face of the pulley. The original version is a long thick cylinder with the hex at the outer end. The third version has a shorter hex, about like the thickness of 3 nuts stacked. You want the third version.

The dodge 3.0 is different from the the mitsu rwd version. The toughest to get around is the oil pump. The fwd motor has the oil pump where the rwd motor has the dside motor mount. They can be swapped, with some mods, using the rwd motor mounts and all other parts but the block and heads. Not easy.

If you need to set the timing, you have to ground the timing connector to remove ecu timing control. Connector is on a brown wire near the brake booster. Single wire. Download the fsm and get the spec. Procedure is in the fsm.

I checked the starter wires yesterday they were loose, of course tightened em, Ill look in the threads for all the engine grounds and clean em and tighten them.Ill pull the coil wire from the distributor and ground it then try to start it see if it cranks faster? Unfortunately its starting real fast when I crank it with the new battery, like .5 of a second and it starts, but kinda like a race engine rr Vrooom- pretty bad at typing sound effects, maybe Im just being to picky, however I know what -10 below weather does to a vehicle thats a hard start, which is why I bought it, its also a bit better to work on em when its 80 degrees.Ill just order the 3rd generation pulley bolt, Im guessing call my Mitsubishi dealer and tell em what I need? Cant imagine its much more than 2 bucks and a lot of piece of mind. Ill worry about the timing once I hit all the other stuff, runs awesome and I feel like a dumb-ass asking the difference in a previous post about the power difference between a 2.6 and a 3.0. Just didnt seem like that much of a C.I. difference.Any suggestions gratly appreciated. Thanks METALMOVER by the way wife is making spaghetti if anyone wants to stop by, but bring beer I only have about 18 left!
