I'm replacing the water pump on my '90 Gen I 3.0. I had to replace the housing as well, so I bought the full pump from Rock Auto; it was the Gates #43551 and fit perfectly. So today, after getting it installed and giving the RTV time to cure, I put a pressure tester on the cooling system and pumped it up to around 20 psi to check that it's all sealed. Pretty much immediately water started dripping out of the channel where the weep hole drains. Ugh.
What does this mean? The water pump is bad? Is there anything I could have done to cause this? I though that maybe I had over-pressurized it, but the FSM says to test up to 23 PSI.
thanks, steve

The seal may need to bed in. I would run it and test it again.

Ok, I'll give it a try. How quickly should I expect the "bed in" process to take? I've got to build everything back up in order to run it, so I probably won't get a chance till this weekend.
I'm tired of taking this thing apart On the positive side, I'm getting really good at putting it back together again...
thanks, steve

Hi Steve
I'm a engine builder by trade ... Just did a high horse power engine in a Subaru ...The owner had just put a new water pump in before the motor fraged... It took a mouth or so to get the engine back going ... Once it was running the water pump had a weap out the hole as yours had ... A week or so later a 300 miles it had stopped leaking ...If that helps ...

Just wanted to close the loop on this thread. I did finally build the top and front of the engine back up and run the thing as you all suggested. So far (after 300+ miles) the water pump seems to be holding out fine. Thanks for the help; it's nice to have a calm voice on the other end of the line when I'm freaking out ;-)
Of course it's still losing some coolant from someplace else, but that'll have to wait until I have some time to focus on it to figure out where that's happening...
thanks, steve

Are you finding your missing coolant in the form of a puddle under the truck or is it burning coolant?

No puddles, I just have to refill the overflow every few days and I can smell the stuff every time I get the engine hot. I found some leaking down under the transmission over the weekend; I suspect it was one of the hose clamps on the backside of the engine. I tightened it, so hopefully that will stop.
But the driver's side of the engine is sticky these days too; I'm afraid that it might be the head gasket on that side. This is a pretty fresh rebuild (< 2000 miles). It's my first and I'm learning from all my mistakes ;-). I don't know if there's any hope that it might just fix itself. Otherwise I figure that I'll have to take a Saturday and tear the top and front off again, put the pressure tester on it and see where it's coming from. Right now I've got some other things that I want to focus on; if it's not going through a lot of coolant, I figure I can wait a while.
thanks, steve

VERY SOON, retorque the head bolts, and you may save it.
Did you have the head surface machined?
