It followed me home...

Not 4wd but definitely something I've wanted for a very long time!
1987 Starion (not Conquest) 5speed black leather seats, and I bought it for $1200 and it just needs a freezeplug replaced and a little bit of TLC.

to answer the Raider Q, its unstoppable. It goes where I point it regardless of whats in the way. I have to mothball the Raider until I pull out the Montero engine to swap into the Raider because it smells like everything is burning and clicks and claks. Still runs though and I can drive it around if it has to get me somewhere... Montero is getting the 3.5 this summer as well. First on the list is getting that Starion up and running by the weekend.

Absolutely. Which is why I bought the Raider!

Once you get the engines sorted in the trucks, consider losing the G54B in that new ride in favor of a 4G64T. Then bask in the glory of an aftermarket enabling you to put 400hp to the rear wheels for under a grand and go hunting.

Out of curiosity does the aftermarket offer cams and other parts designed for low end power/torque for the G54B?

mmm in short no.. But like puting SS valves on the head will help it flow more down low. A Magna MPI Intake would help the low end as well. But to be honest its going to be alot of $$ for not that much with just N/A

The stock cam is already a torque cam. FWIW, the starion runs the exact same cam. You might try advancing the cam a couple of degrees for some more torque, but the 2.6 already has almost the torque of the 3.0.

I dropped the gas tank (it was easy, it was ratchet strapped on...) the top of the tank has a little rust but fixable, the tank had about a 3/4 a gallon of dark brown gas. I did find a small 2 inch spot of rust where the muffler hanger seemed to snap off and that spot rotted. I think thats easy enough to weld up while the tank is off.
another picture, nothing spectacular...

It was held on with a single ratchet strap because previous owner dropped the gas tank and didn't bother to reinstall it properly. I need to new fuel hoses and maybe a new pump since the tank is off.

Well, the honeymoon was cut short. pulled the intake and found dried coolant deposits all over, coolant lines showed no better. Head = toast from what I can gather... I guess I found a use for the 2.6 turbo sitting in my garage after all

I should have the engine out tomorrow and on the stand to take off essential parts to swap back over to the other motor.

Motor is out of the car and on a stand torn down to pretty much the head and the block. pretty smooth sailing
Not photoshop, just poorly hung

engine out

freeze plug that did the engine in

metal fragments in the oil screen

Waterpump full of Bars Stopleak...

all the parts are ordered (minus the strip and street clutch, and new wheelbearings etc for the rest of the car... Should be coming along nicely these next 2 weeks. Also, can someone confirm if I can reuse the Starions flywheel with a wideblock 2.0? If I drop $500-600 on a clutch, I want to use it as part of my 4G63 conversion this coming winter project.

Nice project, good to see it has the 88-89 front lip already. Looks like someone pretty thoroughly made allot of work necessary on that one.
Other spots to check for rust would be the frame section under the passengers feet, the AC drains into that frame section.
And the inner rockers rust around the seat belt mounts, the rocker extensions cause poor venting along the structural rockers.

With a turbo on the G54 there is ample torque. Porting the head gives it ample power up above as well.

Yes the G54 flywheel will bolt up to a 6 bolt wide G6X engine.
If you can, lighten that flywheel as much as you can or spend money on an aftermarket one.
For clutches I like to install 4 or 6 puck discs on the stock pressure plate, A $150 disc will hold the power fine.
In the clutch slave, if you disconnect the banjo bolt there is a little check valve in there, let the valve fall on the ground and get driven into the soil, there is no need for it on a torquey car. The valve makes the clutch engage slowly so the 34# flywheel will not break things. Problem is the clutch glazes and works like poo from spirited driving.

And be careful, these are like pack animals, they do like to nest in groups, I have had 7 of them for many years now, they just seem to arrive here.

I dropped the flywheel off at the machine shop to lose some weight. I dropped the valve cover at the powder coater, and am shopping around for a new clutch kit. The pressure plate was dropped on dismantle and broken, so I am just going to buy a new kit. I want to buy a new slave cyl so I will check for that little valve. I am seriously excited for this thing to be on the road in 2-3 weeks.

I need to get my hands on a FSM, anyone got one?

This is probably a dumb question(consider the source)...Is a Dodge Daytona Shelby the same thing as a Starquest?
The reason I'm asking is, there's a guy near me that has 2 Shelbys that he seems very willing to part with. Thanks in advance.

Entirely different beasts, and inferior. FWD, mopar motors, crappy mopar paint and build quality, etc. Pass on them. Now, if you can find a GLHS Shelby, jump on it...

my money is on the turbo. he replaced it pretty recently. with the cooked oil and the missing coolant, I would figure the turbo overheated and started eating its bearings. But I will report what I find when I pull the front cover off.

The Turbos very Rarely make the car over heat and eat the insides on them. as they have coolant running through them. More likly the head/head gasket went and then there was coolant lose and then it goes down hill fast.

not saying the turbo overheated, but the engine lost its coolant and the turbo with no coolant overheated and ate its bearings.

for $600 you'd hope it would come with a new flywheel too, but yes it does come with a new pilot bearing.

You couldn't find any "green" for that valve cover???

I love it. Very nice indeed.

Sounds like you're going all out with it.

Just a reminder... The boys over at the Starquest board are very nice and helpful, in case you haven't found that out already.

Also, I was reading a post there the other day and one guy wrote there's a restrictor plate built into the air can of a Starion. I figured I'd go looking for that in my son's engine and get it out of there.

I've also got a 3.0 Montero air can assembly I'm going to try on the Starion motor. As far as I can tell, the guts of the two are about the same and the Montero can is much smaller. It's not as much an issue in the Starion (since it's supposed to be in there anyway) as in a Montero where there's little room. There is a wastegate actuator solenoid on the Starion can (88-89), but it can be removed. I'm not sure it's even there on an 87.

When you get ready to put the head back on, spring for an Ajusa head gasket. It's a thing of beauty.

Randy at Engine Machine Service is very knowledgeable about these engines and is happy to help. Find him HERE. All kinds of goodies in stock.

In any case, excellent find. I have a feeling like you're really going to enjoy it.

That is not a restrictor, it is actually a muffler. I remove them. You will find moments when the injection is affected from noise emitted from the compressor when it burbles and chirps. But hey a Starion injection is a late 70s technology and is far from precise.

Rats... Almost forgot.

Go ahead and replace the injector clips. I think Engine Machine stocks them, but you can also get them from NAPA (but they're twice the price). Solder them on and don't forget a dab of di-electric grease.

There...done.

I picked up the engine head and all the other parts from the machine shop today. Thing looks CLEAN. jet valves eliminated, Balance shaft eliminator is on order for Friday. I already bought the Felpro head kit. Is that ok for right now? I plan on the 2.4 build for this car this winter or next summer. the 2.6 is just going to be keeping her up and running pretty until then. I hope to find a buyer for this motor after I do my build next year, but seeing how hard it is to find parts in good shape I feel it won't be a hard sell... Plus, all that green !:o
Clean from the machine shop (garage is a mess, sue me)

POR'd the gas tank as well

Felpro makes pretty good gaskets. I can't complain about them. Mine was built using Felpro the first time around and it held up just fine for over 50,000 miles. I went back with the Ajusa as I didn't need a whole head set and they're available separately. Kind of pricey, but well worth it me thinks. If I get bitten, I'll wear the scar I reckon...

That's real nice looking work you're doing. And, compared to my garage, your shop looks pretty damn good.

@Colt,
I'm going to get that muffler out of there. Anything that will help the engine breathe better is a good thing. Thanks for the explanation.

You know that if you use the 5 speed manual from a 2004-06 Kia Sorento 2wd, that 3.5 will bolt right into that Starion
Well a little tin work needs to be done around the shifter.
Then you don't need to fuss with those controversial balance shafts, the car would be smoooth.

I would do that if I found a forced induction kit for the 3.5 but I see very little in the way of aftermarket performance parts for it. Also, I want a 6 speed if I upgrade the trans.

Update:
Between my Raiders bumper, and Starion parts. Ive been ignoring the starion to an extent. But today I got most of the engine assembled. I should hopefully have the clutch installed and the engine dropped back in by tomorrow.
I installed the John Baker cam in this, so I will see how the car runs with it and report back.

Do you know the specs on that cam? May have too much overlap for a turbo motor. Turbos like stock cams, or at least conservative cams. Too much overlap with boost tends to blow some of the charge out the open exhaust valve...

as long as it runs fine until I build my 2.0 then I don't mind that much. But its not hard to change if it requires the stock one.

I ran that cam for years, many years ago, it is fine in a turbo car. Only issue I had was the cam was soft and wiped a few lobes off in a matter of years.

The cam is quite mild, really responds with a ported head.

Humm, with 8 Starions in the yard I am not sure I have either a stock complete one or a stock running one. Not all the hoses go back in the cars around here.
But these are far simpler than a Gen 1 Montero under the hood.

Look here.

Pinned (stickied) up top is a service manual, if you haven't gotten one already.

About half way down the page, you'll see this. Hopefully, that'll answer your vacuum hose questions.

There's a diagram in the 88 conquest fsm on mitsubishilinks.com in the emissions control section, page 3. It's complete, but a little hard to follow. The only other illustration I've seen is a drawing with a wad of spaghetti in the middle, even less help, but between the two, you can figure it out. Most of it is control of the egr, with stoppers for low temp operation, and control of the secondary air system, which I deleted.

The Centerfarce in a Starion suck. The pedal travel is so long you need to raise the pedal and it still needs to be pushed into the mat to shift.

Might be easier to source a big flywheel... I bet it's cheaper, too.

Edit: found several on car-part.com, 3 in the SE, one in Shirley, MA. Prices from $call down to $50. Bus shipping should not be too bad.

the Montero flywheel I had sitting around was a junk one because of the loose bolts causing all sorts of distortion. I hate begging, but anyone have a spare later model flywheel? I will gladly pay shipping plus a little more because I REALLLY want this car on the road soon...

3 months later.... Update!

I rebuilt the engine TWICE (rod caps got mixed up and vise gripped the crank breaking the crank bolt off) After alot of setbacks. I got the engine back in the car, and today bought an Optima Yellowtop and checked if my wiring was a success or not. engine cranks over but I don't have the engine buttoned up to the point where it will start, just getting old gas out of the lines and checking electronics. Tomorrow is go time!
