Too much rust to be worth it? and 31x10.5 wheels fit stock alloys
      #1249955 - 08/12/11 10:00 PM

New to the whole 4x4, offroad, trail running scene (sorry if i ramble). Bought my raider off craigslist (had no idea wtf a raider was) last winter as a beater for $700. Sold the car and kind of fell in love with this little beast! Oh and I want to confirm that 31x10.5x15 inch wheels will mount fine on the stock 15x6 alloy rims with plenty of room(i was questioning this and found guys on here had done it). I bought a set of Pro Comp xterrains off craigslist for $225 :). Anyways, I want to fix it up and make it a fun little mud runner/trail runner. Nothing crazy, just something I can play around in. But it's extremely EXTREMELY rusty... should I even bother? Is it possible to pull the motor in this and put in a raider that was originally a 4 cyl auto (found a couple)? I'd list where the rust is but i don't know crap about cars really... i'm a computer technician for a hospital (i have friends that have shops that would help me).. but for an idea, the back part of the frame is so bad, i was told not to even attempt to tow anything for the back end would probably rip off... the body has rust everywhere... front sway bar (i think) isn't attached at one point because the bolt pulled through where it was mounted... I'd post pictures but not sure what's the best and easiest way to do so...

31s are going to fit fine. Post pictures of the rust I'd like to see because mine is rusting in a few spots also. Thank god nothing on the frame though.

Too much rust to fix. No, it won't go into the 4cyl truck easy, but it can be done with sound donor tranny crossmember swap and some work on the motor mounts. Swap the whole front/rear driveline. Have to weld on coil spring perches...

The truck is worth the work...

If you were told you shouldn't tow because the frame is rusted then swap, but if it's just the body then it's just cosmetic. Might be the frame, being Ohio, depending how priors took care of it.

yeah the frame has quite a bit of rust :'( when i bought it, the floor boards were basically gone too... lol and i bought it in the dead of winter... by the time i got home my legs were soaked from the snowy mess that splashed up through the holes... lol i ended up laying down aluminium house siding, filling the holes with that expanding foam, and then throwing spare house carpet down for an insulator and noise canceler! hahaha so hillbilly... but umm... how do i post pictures with this forum? do i have to upload to a free picture hosting site and then link them? or does this forum have a picture upload section?

This is my 1989 Raider :)

Picture of the tires I just got.. 4 tires for $225 :)

Under back right bumper frame.

Under back left bumper frame.

This is back left bumper looking into the wheel well

This is behind the front passenger wheel. Taken from the front of the car.

This is taken from the front of the bumper. I was showing how the bolt snapped that held the sway arm up against the frame. Drivers side.

This is behind the drivers wheel taken from the front. Again you can see how the sway bar is dropped and it's hard to see, but the top left nut on the gear box broke off (or whatever that thing is called).

I would tell you to enjoy the time you and it have together until it breaks. I would be calling junkyards and make sure your on a list if a clean one comes in. If the engine and drivetrain are good I would swap it into a clean truck. That, or find a rolled truck and swap frames. I wash my trucks weekly here in PA just for to prevent whats happening to your truck. be thankful mitsu used boxed frames or that truck would of broke in half long ago.
also, welcome to the wire!

I'd be afraid to drive it. My 95 SR came from MN, and I thought it had bad rust. If your up to it, there are a few Gen 1's here in San Antonio area for sale. And I would bet money they are just as rust free as the day they left the lot.

Wow.
I'd worry about the gas tank falling off, and the steering box as well.
Please don't put other drivers at risk...

If you do get in an accident, it's possible your frame and body will seperate.

Be careful.

Your close enough to pa? i see fairly decent Raiders pop up on CL for around $600 with a bad timing belt or something. ive never seen a truck that badly rusted before... Cant save yours, but you could use your trucks parts to save a nice one from the crusher...
