New Montero dead. Suspect big engine trouble. Advice needed.
      #1246610 - 06/14/11 06:35 PM

At the suggestion of one of the forum members here, I'm posting up in the tech section in hopes of getting some traffic on my other thread. The AZ crew has been with me since the beginning and helping a bunch, but I'm hoping more people will see the thread and maybe see something to offer advice on. Trouble started here:

Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer assistance/insight.

Jay

Fixed the link. Hopefully it works this time.

Cliff notes: Drove from ABQ after picking the Montero up. Made it to PHX. Drove around the next day. Engine started ticking, then knocking, then dead and had to walk home. Now tearing into the engine to check timing. Started it (barely) yesterday but will not stay running. No check engine light. Loud knocking/scraping noise from somewhere underneath but won't stay running long enough to pinpoint. Truck was sluggish and had an idle issue when I picked it up, but made it to PHX just fine. IAC tested open on pins 1 and 2, the rest in spec. Noticed in about 600 miles that I'm down 2 quarts in oil, but no leaks, no smoke, no drips. That one is a mystery.

WIth the noise comments, lets cut to the chase. Pull the drain plug and inspect the oil for metal. Not full proof, but if you see metal its bad.

Will do Lloyd. Was too dark out last night to get to that, but will definitely take a look at that tonight when I get home. Going to HF to pick up a breaker bar and a new drop light. Mine quite working on me. Seems to be a pattern...

who'd you piss off?

Just kidding...

Viewed the thread. Timing needs to be checked as has been stated for sure. Based on the pics, I think that belts a tad bit loose IMHO but check the FSM for the inspection & tightening procedure to be sure. I think it tells you how to gauge the tightness of it.

Sorry for the bad luck on this. Hope it turns out to be nothing serious.

Blackstone Labs will do an engine oil analysis for cheap. Do a Google search for them. They send you a plastic bottle you fill it with used oil and mail it to them along with a questionnaire about what oil, engine, miles, etc.

The report they supply you with is very comprehensive and their suggestions are based in facts. They test for trace metals (which indicate wear in specific components), coolant and fuel, among other things.

When I had my '95's oil tested last year, I got not only a clean bill of health, but a suggestion that I could extend my oil change interval, as the additive package in the oil was still present in sufficient quantities to support safe operation.

I think it was around $20, and in my opinion, well worth it.

Crap. Wish I would have read this before I started working on the Montero tonight. I drained the oil into some old oil from my diesel truck since my container wasn't full, so a test isn't an option, but a good idea. What sized bottle are we talking? I only drained via the drain plug, but haven't dropped the pan. Maybe there is enough left over to do an analysis? I'm going to update the other thread with progress tonight since that's where all of the pictures are. Thanks for the good idea John. Hopefully I can scrape enough together for an analysis.
