HELLO! After 2 months of waiting- THE SPORTAGE HAS A LOCKING DIFF!!! not a limited slip, not a welded diff- a real locking diff.
took it offroad this morning after the install - its amazing. like a different car altogether. i didnt have anyone to make a video - but i will do it ASAP and i will post it on youtube.
here is a link to a photo gallery from this morning- starting with arriving to the garage (an important step-wouldnt you agree?) - taking the rear diff apart- taking the driveshafts out - then taking out the limited slip diff- and putting in a new case (and cleaning the whole diff)- with a TRACKFINDER locker (notice the difference between the case of the open diff and the LSD diff. then installing it all back in and filling up with diff oil. took 3 hours. im really sorry if the pictures are not of the best quality. but you can definately learn a lot from the process.
have fun!

Looks good. I'll be installing my modified limited slip friday, It probably wont work as good as your locker but it should be better than open. Can't wait for the wheelin vids and I hope to get some Moab vids at the end of the month.

here are some videos that i made today. didnt really go offroad- i simply went to a small quary where we usually hang out with the sporty. mune is the brown sporty. notice the parts where one wheel is in the air and the sporty just keeps going!!! the hills on the video may seem like a piece of cake- vbut i have tried to climb them before i had a diff lock many times- and was laughed at. a lot....

gonna take some time before i hit the trails-but i am amazed at how the sporty has changed. the traction is beyond belief - even in extreme conditions when one rear wheel and one frone wheel are airborn. im taking things slowly because the limits that i knew regarding traction, grip and ability are long gone.

nice video wish I had a lift would make working on mine a lot easier, want to change out mine but the money is hard to come by right now, if a LSD fall's in my lap I might go for it, never knew why they ever made a rear diff with only 1 wheel gripping the road, a pos. diff would be nice for me also.
Again nice video

I live in Ohio in the USA, when the road are iced in winter, the sporty's with the stock with out lsd or possie you slide, I only have a 2wd wish it was a 4x4 but even with that it might still only have 1 wheel in rear grabbing the road, your locker must be nic, thumbs up to you my friend

10X friend. Actually-if you are living in ohio-or any other snowy place for that matter than life with the locking diff might be a bit hard. as time passes im getting more and more used to it-and i can say that off road its really great but on tarmac it has its disadvantages. you can feel it on tight bends (like on a junction), especially if you are doing more than 30 KPH (about 20 MPH)- the outer rear wheel "wants" to spin faster and that will result in really rough noises and a loud bang from the rear diff- i checked with the factory -they said thats the way it should work and that it will smooth out in time. i know for a fact that all my friends who have an automatic locker on their suzuki and toyota have the same "side effects". i guess that in the snow you dont want that to happen to you cause the sudden loss of traction on the rear will cause a nasty drift (cool) and you might spin out (uncool).

I have had my sporty put me into a 90* slide to the left a few times in snow and ice, a little , and it put me into the other lane, if a car or truck would have been come from the other direction I would have been t-boned, this 1 place if on coming traffic would have been coming I would have taken the sporty off a embankment so that other would have not been hurt, if I could come across a LSD rear diff total I would get it. then just use my diff for parts. did you replace the bearings

in order to install the locker i had to take my LSD out and to install a regular open diff- actually its quite common here and can be bought at any breakers yard-cause we only had the sporty with LSD. id be glad to send mine -its just sitting in a box in the garage-but its really heavy and shipment will be really expensive. as for the bearings-as you can see in the pictures and video- both were replaced.

I got my limited slip installed last Friday, drove about 230 miles on it so far with no problems. A week from today I will be in Moab on the Golden Spike trail, I can't wait for the the golden crack and the golden stair case. I have been told there is someone in the group that takes videos so I hope it makes youtube. I will post that and pics when I get back. Any one wanting to try the locker I have an extra open dif, PM me if interested.

Dennis,
I still have my rear open diff too. However, I'm going to keep my hands on it just in case these lockers somehow make it stateside for a reasonable price. Then I can load it in and be ready to go. I want one for the front mainly, but I'd take one for the rear too because my factory LSD in the rear is about worn out.
Which LSD did you put in? You can PM me.
I wish I were going with you to MOAB. I wanted to do Golden Spike when we went the first time as the KIA group. You have to do Gold Bar or Poison Spider Mesa first to get to Golden Spike. Then either turn around and come back the same way, or continue on and hit the other one on the way out. It takes all day to do this route, so make sure you take plenty of food and water.
Have lots of fun and please post on how you like the LSD compared to the open diff you had last time.

I got a front and rear third member out of the wrecking yard and put the LS in that one so that is the open dif I have extra, I am keeping my original one just in case the lockers make it here. My extra front one is also waiting for when I find a front locker. I put a factory Kia LS slip in but I shimed the springs to tighten it up a bit. I think we are going throug poison spider, golden spike and gold bar rim in that order. My boy is going again to take pics so I should have plenty to post.

Dennis,
Where did you get the factory LS? Pic n Pull? How did you shim the springs? Maybe I can pull my third and do the same because they don't make the rebuild kit anymore.

I got the LS from Everet, I'm not sure where he got it. To shim it I used a tapered bolt and ran it through the holes in the plate that the springs seat up to, I got washers that would fit over the indents that hold the springs in place, then I used locktight on a nut to hold the washer in. After that I used a Dremmel to round the nut so the spring would fit over and I ground the head of the bolt flush with the plate so it would not catch on the clutches. I'm not sure how much better than stock it will be but with one tire in the air, the other on the ground and the trans in nutural I could almost get a full 75lb torque on the lugs. I wish I would have taken pics but when I get working I just forget.

went wheeling near the dead sea. the sporty is a totally different beast.
this is a small canyon- this is howe it looks going down into the canyon - one wheel in the air- no way i can go up:

this is how it looks going up!!! notice that i dont need to build speed before the obstacle - this is 1'500 rpm and both rear wheels are spinning

I have sent another email to KIA JAFFOenquiring about difflocks, extended forks and hopefully ring and pinions. Hopefully I will recieve some communication this time. I can only surmise that they did not recieve my email last time.

hey chris
i was contacted yesterday by kiajaffo - they will reply soon. as for your email - the 97 has 26 splines and they dont have a diff lock for it - only 28 splines - as fitted to 98-2003 sportages. the front forks will fit - but they are still trying to figure out the cost of shipment. unfortunately- 5.3 diff ratios are no longer available- i was sorry to hear that too - my sporty is really slow on 235/75

Will the 28 spline axle shafts fit in a 26 spline axle housing? If so you could find some used shafts and get the trackfinder fo work for you.
Just a thought, Dennis

Definately something to look into.
The only concern is the ABS on the rear brakes on later models. Mine does not have it.
Does any one know if the axles out of a later model will fit?
cheers, Chris
