100 amp GM alternators with the correct pulley are about $95 new.

The 100 amp GM alternator is what a lot of Starion owners have used. It's not a bad choice.

The 100 amp GM requires and adaptor to bolt to the block and a differant wiring harness to the regulator.

The part from a 3000gt has the right mounting ears and bolts up with only a simple spacer.

Also by using a Mitsubishi alternator the connector to the alternator does not need to be swapped.

Both alternators should get the power wire upgraded.

Neither is a show stopper... The only issue I have seen is getting the right pulley. My idea was to make it easy to use a Mitsubishi part and have it look like a factory put it there.

I'm looking at a couple of ways to do this.

More later,

Kevin

The Mits solution is fine for me. Let me know what you work out with the pulley. I've been looking at upgrade options for electrical power (dual batteries, H.O. alternator) so timing is right.
Thanks!

Mitsubishi has both a 50A and 90A alternators with 17mm shafts. I expect others as well. The 50A is used on many pieces of industrial equipment and has V belt pulleys.
The pulleys are available separately as well.

So far I haven't found a one that fits the 110 amp unit. If you now of anything specific, let me know. I will check out the industrial units. I know the factory Montero unit and the Starion 70 Amp alt are 15 mm.

So far every Mitsubishi V belt alt I have checked the front bearing PN on has been 15 mm. I'm sure your right, its just a matter of finding the right one.

An alternator I have in hand is pn- 624-50540 Mits # A7TA2283. This is a 115mm stator alternator, tiny thing but has the 17mm shaft. This came with a 60mm V belt pulley, I am changing it to a multi rib since it now will be on a 1600 Mivec in a track car.
There are other brands that have 17mm shafts as well. On the Mitsu alternators the 17mm shaft can be ID by the nut on the shaft, the 15mm has a nut/washer. The 17mm has a flanged nut.
The 90A alternators will have a 17mm shaft as well but I only know of them with rib belts.
This is the alternator I speak of but on the engine core it has an aftermarket underdrive alloy pulley.

Summit has pulleys with a 17mm bore. Otherwise most pulleys can be bored out.

Most of the one I have seen with a 17 mm bore need to be modified to work with the shorter shaft length of the mits unit.

Not a deal breaker... But that's what I'm looking at having done.

The other thing I'm looking at is making a double pulley version to deal with the load of a 110 amp alternator.

With the pulley swapping I have been doing there seem to be many offsets used. Look for someone who works with Clark equipment, many brands of fork lifts. small tractors, Toro equipment, many of the small excavators, the Mitsu diesels, the 2.3 turbo Merkur for some. Many of the diesels and heavy equipment were double pulley as well. Some of these have pumps mounted to the back of the alternator giving need for the heavy shaft.

Hi Plh, I just read another forum about using different size pulleys to increase alternator speed. They called it "overdriving" and the pulley swap eliminated purchasing HO alternator. Have you heard anything like that and how it would work on 2.6?

Thanks much!

I had a guy out west "fix" one up for me & was able to draw out 160amps out of it for only $160. So far I only know of me & bretwalda that have done it & it works lovely

Just thinking out loud here...

I know the alternator output increases with the rpm. Is the power output increase a flat line as the rpm goes up or does it flatten out past a certain rpm?

Example:
If the alternator is designed to provide a max output of 110amps when the engine's at 2000 rpm then realistically the smallest pulley we should be looking for will be 1/3 the diameter of the stock pulley.

On the other hand, if my supposition is wrong, disregard this post...
